Jones R. Jones Council. I look forward to working with the officers and membership to continue and keep this council in good standing and an organization we could all be proud of. Brothers as you know this will take a team effort. We can never have too much help. If the Spirit moves you, please talk to me or one of our officers for more information on taking a more active part in the council. Please remember your new Council Officers in your prayers. They have a reason for stepping up and wanting to be recognized. Whatever that reason is, it probably boils down to one significant thing, and that is; by taking an active part in the Council, something they do during the course of the year, will make this organization a better place for its members and their families. Much has been accomplished during the last fraternal year with Past Grand Knight Mikie Casem at the Helm. He stayed on top of the paperwork and submitted all required forms. Our Council received numerous accolades from the State Council as well as the Supreme Council. He has set an excellent example for me to follow and I thank him for that. Since it is the start of a new fraternal year much work remains to be done. In essences it starts all over again. With all our prayers, encouragement and individual involvement there is no doubt in my mind that the future of our council will continue to be a bright and successful one. How many of us believe that our order is a family oriented service organization? Well, I was pleasantly surprised and reminded of this once again at the K of C State Convention that was held here in New Bern in May. A resolution, at the business meeting, was voted on and passed to that effect. The resolution stated AUGUST HAPPENINGS 20 Thu. Noon to 6PM Blood Donation Council Hall 21 Fri. 10AM to 4PM Blood Donation Council Hall 24 - Mon. Bingo Council Hall 25 Tue. FIRST DAY Craven County Schools School Year 27 Thu. 7p.m. Council Officers Meeting Council Lounge 30 Sun. 4th Degree Installation of SEPTEMBER HAPPENINGS that Knights owe much of their success to the continued support of their spouses and often the spouses are not recognized for their efforts to support members. Therefore it was resolved that the Knights of Columbus acknowledge the continued support of their spouses and that the Knights express their sincere thanks and appreciation to all wives and widows. This resolution should take away all doubt. It goes without saying, that our wives play a major role in Knights activities. Their support is paramount to our success. Our Council was a major player in the planning of the 2009 State Convention and almost every knight who was on a committee, had his wife right there with him, taking an active role. It makes things go a lot smoother when our wives know what we are involved in and what needs to be done. You could say that they are half of what our council is all about. Brothers, keep a rosary in your pocket, a song in your heart and be of service to somebody. Rich Tomasik, GK Officers 31-Mon. 3 KNIGHTLIGHTER PAGE 3 Deputy Grand Knight s Perspective The fraternal year was just completed on June 30 th and as I reflect back on how the year went and what we accomplished as a Council, it became apparent that much was done, and most of it was very successful. Even Ted Williams one of baseball s greatest hitters never batted 1000 in his professional career. So we should celebrate those things that we did well, learn from what we didn t do too well and move on and approach our next challenge with enthusiasm and a conviction to do all we can in support of the principles of the Knights of Columbus. All great tasks start the same way, a realization that something needs to be done, that it is important, and there are folks available that can make it happen. Once that is understood and agreed to, than it becomes a matter of finding the right folks to accomplish the tasks. Most of the time it doesn t take the most experienced or the most intellectual among us, but someone who can roll up their sleeves and make a positive contribution to the team effort and get the job done. Each of us has God given talents that we can use to assist others and make our little corner of the world a better place for all. On the personal side it seems that the year flew by. I was just getting used to the role of Chancellor, when elections took place and I was honored to be selected as the Deputy Grand Knight. I look forward to serving you in that role by supporting the Grand Knight and assuming some of the responsibilities that make Msgr. James R. Jones Council 3303 one of the best Councils in the State. It became apparent to me at the State Convention we hosted recently, that this is a Great Council and we should all be proud of what we have accomplished. Won t you join me in that quest by pitching in and not be shy about stepping up and sharing your skills and talents with your brother Knights? Your efforts will not go unnoticed by the brothers around you and by our most revered brother Jesus. Vivat Jesus, Leo Minervini, DGK Health Issues Force Bill Pake To Step Faced with increasing health issues, including rehabbing from recent back surgery, Bill Pake has resigned his dual officer positions with Council 3303 and Assembly 1820, effective July 1. For the past several years Bill has served faithfully as FS for the Council as well as F. Comptroller for the Assembly. During his three decades as a Knight, Bill has served a number of positions, including Grand Knight and District Deputy. He is also currently a member of the 4 th Degree Color Corps. Bill and his smile aren t going anywhere. He says he s glad to give (his) confuser a rest and looks forward to just sitting in the peanut gallery for awhile. Thanks, Bill, for your many years of service! Mikie Casem, PGK & Sandy Stewart, FN KNIGHTS OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Thursday at St Paul Catholic Church after the 8am Mass and ending with Benediction at 12 O clock. All Knights are welcome. The Prayer Book for all Knights and Parishioners who are sick or need prayers is in the Atrium and is placed on the Altar. SK Hugh McHugh "Can You Come Watch One Hour With Me?" Our Evolution When our organization began, in order to help each other, our members passed the hat to assist families of deceased members. Soon, however, this became impossible, as the number of our members grew. Out of this simple process, we've evolved into a modern, dynamic insurance organization, and offer a wide variety of products to suit virtually everyone s needs. *Permanent Plans* Policy lasts as long as you live, premium stays the same. *Term Plans* Policy ends at end of specified term: renewable or convertible. *Annuities* Provides an income that is guaranteed for life. *Long Term Care* Provides funds for long-term, out-of-hospital care. 4 PAGE 4 KNIGHTLIGHTER Notes from the Faithful Navigator June was a busy month with several events which impacted the assembly in various ways. First and foremost, our Pastor, Father Ernest Ruede, was transferred to Infant of Prague in Jacksonville, N.C. Father Ernest was our Faithful Friar and he attended as many meetings as his schedule allowed him to. For me, personally, he was my good friend and my mentor. Father was one of the main reasons I was baptized into the Catholic Church. Hearing about the word of God from Father had a large impact on me. I, as well as others, will greatly miss him. We need to continue with our work and provide the same support for Msgr. Lewis. Someone told me, being a Christian, that it is not the individuals but the Church we belong to and ultimately Jesus Christ we worship. A big thank you to all who took part in Father Ernest s last Mass, at St. Paul, on Sunday, June 28 at 11 am. The Color Corps was superb and enabled us to bid a fond adieu to our Faithful Friar and friend. Thanks also to the Sir Knights who donned their tuxes, to participate as ushers, and all of the Knights that came to process in for the Mass. Finally thanks to all of the gentlemen who joined us on a very hot and humid Monday and Tuesday, June 29 and 30 th, to pack the trucks for Father Ernest and Sister Susan. Among them were Rich Tomasik, Danny Gennantonio, Claude Cote, Bill Elliott, John Scharf, Joe McQuarrie, Jerry Jensen, Walt Sierocki, Jerry Tetreault, Lud Hartung and myself. I hope I have named everyone. It was a hard job and truly showed the love you have for the religious. We had our election recently and the results are in a separate article. However, I would like to recognize two Sir Knights who did not seek re-election. SK Bill Pake has served the Assembly for many years in various capacities including Faithful Navigator and Faithful Comptroller. In addition Mikie Casem decided not to run for reelection as Faithful Pilot. The presence of both of these Sir Knights on the Board will be missed. I am sure they will continue to provide advice Knights of Columbus Fantastic Sale Knights of Columbus would like to thank everyone for another successful gigantic sale held on June 27, Our thanks to the Knights, their wives and all of the people that helped in any way for everything they did. A special thanks for all of the wonderful donations. We also would like to thank the 1300 plus customers that attended the sale. It is through these sales we are able to continue to contribute to MERCI Clinic, Special Olympics, Senior Pharmacy, Fund for Needy Children, Wounded Warriors Leave Program and many others that seek our help. Look for another sale this year in the fall. We would like to have more people become involved. This is a rewarding job, knowing you are helping many organizations that are in need of our help. Thanks again- The Knights of Columbus Gigantic Sale Committee and counsel to our Assembly. On Saturday June 27, we had our gigantic sale and there were many Knights, their wives, parishioners and others not affiliated with the Knights, giving of their time. These people work hard and long hours, making pickups, cleaning, sorting and arranging items for this sale. On that same Saturday, at St. Marks Church in Wilmington, N. C. I was proud to have five new Sir Knights join our Assembly at a District exemplification. The new members are SK William Campbell, SK John H. Scharf, II, SK Paul N. Scharf, SK James L. Smith and SK James M. Stokes, III. Please welcome these Worthy Sir Knights to our Assembly. I know they will be a great asset to the Assembly. I hope to see you at our July meeting, beginning at 7 pm on Wednesday July 8, Please remember if you need a ride or can provide transportation call SK Dennis Colbert at We hope to see you there to take part in our meeting. If you are interested in practicing with the Color Corps, Donald Monk, our Color Corps Commander will be there at 6:30 pm. God Bless Sandy Stewart Faithful Navigator Bright and early at 6:30 am, an anxious and hard working group of workers are ready to greet the crowd. These people have been working for weeks to prepare for this sale. In addition there are a group of men that make many laborious pick ups and they are to be especially commended

5 With the support of his loving and devoted wife, Dorothy, Leo became a Knight and attained the 1 st degree, 2 nd degree and 3 rd degree in New Bern Council 3303 in April He then became a Sir Knight in Assembly #1820 at the exemplification held in Durham, NC in October Both Leo and Dorothy serve as Eucharistic Ministers at St Paul. Leo serves as Lector as well. They both volunteer at the New Bern Civic Theatre where they serve on the advisory committee to the Executive Director. Dorothy fulfils the additional role of Stage Manager for both adult and children s KNIGHTLIGHTER performances at the Athens Theatre and the Studio black box performances. Leo serves on the Board of Directors and has held the position of Treasurer of the Board for the last 4 years. Before getting involved with the New Bern Civic Theatre, both Dorothy and Leo served as volunteers for the American Red Cross in the Four County area as Disaster Volunteers helping families during major hurricanes and assisting families who suffered from individual catastrophes such as house fires. PAGE 5 July Family of the Month - Leo and Dorothy Minervini Knight of the Month They both are very busy this colender year organizing and coordinating the many volunteers who are assisting with Operation LAMB and look forward to an active solicitation period this September when LAMB wraps up the 2009 program. It is through involvement in volunteer programs such as these that they get to meet many good folks in New Bern who have become lifelong friends. They feel that their greatest treasures reside within their own family, as Dorothy and Leo are parents to six wonderful children who have blessed them with nineteen grandchildren and unlimited places to visit throughout the year. James Bottcher was chosen Knight of the Month for July. He became a Knight in the state of Washington and continued on through the degrees until he came to New Bern and became a 4 th Degree Knight. James has been a very active member and a real asset since joining our Council. He is our resident electrician and his work in that area is evident in all of our buildings. When an electrical problem arises Jim is right there with his meter working on the problem. When Building B required new lines run, with separate circuit breakers, no problem Jim installed them. New Lighting and wall plugs were required in the Hall, Jim was able to do the necessary work. His involvement doesn t end there; He works in the kitchen on Monday nights for Bingo, is part of the yard sale crew and holds the officer position of Inside Guard in the council. He is also an usher at the 8 o clock Mass on Sunday mornings at St. Paul Church. We thank Jim for his achievements and hard work, for stepping up and being a commendable example of what it means to be a Knight of Columbus. R T, GK Congratulations to the newly elected and appointed council leaders A new fraternal year is upon us. Congratulations to the newly elected and appointed council leaders. I m sure you have a list of things that you want to accomplish during the coming year. I m eager to help. One of these goals is likely the attainment of the Star Council award the most prestigious award the Order offers at the council level. I m certainly committed to helping on the insurance side where our goal is ten new insured members, but I ll be glad to help on the membership side as well where our new goal is 28 new members. If you know an eligible Catholic man who might be interested in joining the Order (and who among us doesn t), he s probably just waiting to be asked. I can help you, either by approaching him myself, or by coaching you transferring sales skills that you can use to recruit him and other prospects. As always, I m at your service. What would be helpful to all of us would be an early start on those goals, rather than waiting until May or June. Let s get an early start on award season this year. I am one of you. SK John La Pointe

6 KNIGHTLIGHTER Father Ernest Celebrates Last Mass as Pastor at St. Paul On June 28, 2009 our Parish joined together to say so long until we meet again to Father Ernest, Sister Catherine Anne and Sister Susan. These three have dedicated a total of 47 years to the New Bern community. Their knowledge and kindness will always be remembered by everyone. We were fortunate to have their services for as long as we did. Father Ernest will only be an hour away at Infant of Prague in Jacksonville, N. C. Father had served there prior to coming to St. Paul and the parish will be giving him a warm welcome back. PAGE 6 The Knights paid a special tribute to Father, Sister Catherine and Sister Susan by honoring them with the Color Corps as they entered and departed the Mass. The Fourth Degree Knights ushered in their tuxes to add more distinction to the Mass. In addition the Third and Fourth Degree Knights processed in together to pay special respects. Father Ernest, Sister Susan and Sister Catherine Anne Betty Barnett, with many helpers, planned and carried through with a wonderful reception that was attended by approximately 425 people. It was nice to see our parishioners join together and enjoy themselves even though it was sad to see Father, Sister Catherine and Sister Susan leave. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Knights of Columbus Council 3303 and the Knights Fourth Degree Assembly 1820 generously contributed to this reception. In addition everyone was asked to bring side dishes and desserts to enjoy. There was a lot of tasty food for all to enjoy. St. Paul Parish is truly a wonderful Parish and we welcome Msgr. Gerald Lewis to our Parish. Sandy and Nancy Stewart Clockwise starting at upper left- Faithful Navigator, Sandy Stewart reads the Certificate of Appreciation to Father Ernest.
