Parker Assembly 1820 Ne w Be rn, NC Knights of Columbus members give back By Sue Book, Sun Journal Staff Published: Friday, August 15, 2014 at 05:04 PM. October 2014 The Knights of Columbus has been around for 132 years as a United States Catholic fraternal benefit organization. Msgr. James R. Jones Knights of Columbus members Sandy Stewart, PFN, Dick Dodson, Grand Knight, Vince Fragnito, Assembly 4th Degree Faithful Navigator, and Tony Difede, membership director, discuss some projects before their formal meeting begins. The Knights New Bern Council 3303 is affiliated with St. Paul Catholic Church, which counts its beginnings back to 1774 in the city often called the birthplace of Catholicism in North Carolina. Its first church building was completed at 106 Craven St. in The national organization began at St. Mary s Church in New Haven, Conn., originally to provide financial aid to widows and orphans of members and mutual aid and assistance to the sick, disabled members and family. Immigrants, particularly Irish immigrants in New Haven, were being persecuted. If a man passed away, there was no support structure. In the basement of St. Mary s Catholic Church a group of Catholic men got together and, recognizing the need, they formed the Knights of Columbus, Dodson said. Founded in 1882 by those men led by Father Michael McGivney, the fraternal group was named for Christopher Columbus and founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. A fourth precept, patriotism, was added in the early 1900s. It grew in size now involving 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members and mission. Knights now also promote social and intellectual fellowship through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare and works toward war and public relief. In 2013, the Knights of Columbus organization donated more than 70 million man hours of charitable work. Monsignor James R. Jones Council 3303 and the Father Kenneth I Parker Assembly 1820 in New Bern both serve causes and help citizens of the community, regardless of their religion. The Assembly installed new leaders Aug. 3 with Vince Fragnito tapped as Assembly 4th Degree Faithful Navigator. There is a lot of patriotism from the Assembly, Dodson said. They are the color guard, like at a right-to-life rally or other venues where their presence requested. If a Knight passes, the Assembly stands guard during the wake with capes, hats and swords. The Council has 366 members who range in age from 18 to 94 that s quite a spread, said Dodson. We are very active in the community here. We run a (Con t on page 7 )

2 PAGE 2 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2014, IS SUE 5 Brothers, Congratulations to Fr. Tom, Louis Simon and Stan Namowicz for completing their Second Degree. Keep going, the best is yet to come. Upcoming events: Shrimp Boil: October 10 Special Olympics Dinner: Don't have the date with me. Widows Dinner: November 6. Take a moment to read the Pope s Message in the NC Catholic magazine about 10 steps for Happy Living. It will give you a lot to think about. Everyone works hard to raise money for Charity, our First Principle. Many times we don't see any specific examples of help or assistance. When Chancellor Ray Savage and I were delivering checks to charities, we heard a heartwarming story at Dixon Social Services. A young boy was able to get a new pair of size 7 1/2 shoes and wanted to donate his current pair of shoes- -size 10 1/2 that his mother had found- -to some needy family! Amazing how God works with and through us! Your hard work does make a difference. Finally, our Pastor and Chaplain, Fr. Tully has issued a call for more Eucharistic Ministers. As Brother Knights, let's answer his call. Please prayerfully consider this and volunteer. Vivat Jesus, Dick Dodson, Grand Knight Knight of the Month This month we are honored to recognize Rev. Father Thomas Tully as our knight of the month. Originally from Long Island, New York and ordained 30 years ago, Father Tully was installed as Pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church on August 24, 2014 by the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh. Recently Father Tully was also installed as the Chaplain for Council 3303 and has been very supportive of all of our activities. We are all delighted to see him at our regular council and assembly meetings and grateful that he stays on after meetings and socialize with our members. He has attended a K of C first degree installation and a K of C committee meeting for the State Convention for May, 2015 which the Council will host. Father Tully has a very busy schedule saying masses, visiting our sick, teaching religion at St. Paul Catholic School, attending the recent Chamber of Commerce Business Expo booth of St. Paul Catholic School, and even welcoming back this summer our Youth Group from Ohio (a trip sponsored by the knights) at 1AM and offering a ride to anyone in need. Since his arrival in New Bern, I find that when I open the Sun Journal each morning, I expect to find a picture of Father Tully in a picture with KOC members giving an award to a knight or welcoming a new member at an installation ceremony. His support has been overwhelming as the numerous pictures in the Sun Journal show. Everyone appreciates all the support that you have shown for our church, school and for the Knights of Columbus. Thank you for contributing so much in such a short time to all of us. We look forward to your being our pastor and chaplain for many years to come. Jim Whetzel, DGK Grand Knight s Comments

3 PAGE 3 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2014, IS SUE 5 Family of the Month The family of the month for October is Lucy and Bob Andre. Both Bob and Lucy do a lot of work for the church. They are also involved with the Yard sale, You will find them there every Tuesday. They are also a big help with the set up and clean up of our hall before and after every event..we can always count on both of them when help is needed. Hats off to Lucy and Bob for a job well done. Nick Dalessandro, Family Director KENNETH I. PARKER ASSEMBLY YARD SALE: WHEN YOU READ THIS, OUR LAST YARD SALE OF 2014 WILL BE OVER. HOPE YOU DIDN'T MISS IT! Our dedicated Tuesday Yard Sale Workers have been working diligently every Tuesday getting prepared for another gigantic sale. October is usually our best yard sale of the year and, with our Pick-up Crews steadily bringing in all those "treasures", I'm sure it will have been another successful sale. In June we changed our hours on both days and we think it worked well, so we will continue using the same times: Friday Sales will be from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and Saturday Sales will be from 7 a.m. to 12 noon. On Tuesday, September 30th we will have begun work at 7:30 a.m. unloading our six (6) storage areas. Although we have at least 18 Marines scheduled to help us, we will be forever grateful for all our other workers who always show up to help us with this very important segment of our yard sale. As always, I'm also sure there will be many workers' trucks there to deliver everything to our proper areas. During the whole week of Sept. 30th through the last day of our sale on Sat., October 4th, we will have many volunteers. Not only our dedicated Tuesday workers, but all those extra wonderful knights, their wives, and friends who show up during the week preparing and during our sale days to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. In addition to all our regular yard sale assignments, we would like to thank all the chefs and the kitchen crews who will have provided us with excellent nourishing meals every day. Not to mention all the 20 or more bakers for our meals. Details will follow in the next newsletter after the sale and when we have all the figures, etc. Until then, please know how much we appreciate everything all of you do to make this fundraiser the pride and joy of Kenneth I. Parker.. We finally have new ramps built in front of all three storage areas on-site in order to make it easier loading and unloading for all our fantastic pick-up workers. On Friday, Oct. 3rd, we will have also celebrated Father Bill Upah and Father Tully's birthdays. October 3rd & Oct. 6th respectively. In addition to all our other desserts, Aggie Derda will bake a cake for them. There are always a couple of "hitches" with a production as large as ours; however, we will work through them as usual with everyone's determination and assistance to make this our best one yet. We have received so much merchandise that we had to cut off pick-ups before our Sept. 26th deadline because we have no more room! Hopefully, they can hold it for us. Statistically, we as Americans are underinsured and almost 65% of us say that we know we don t have enough life insurance. As a Knights of Columbus Field Agent, I am reminded daily of our mission as Knights to follow the vision of Father Michael J McGivney and the words of our charter, To render financial aid to members and beneficiaries of its members. I am proud to say that the Order has gone far beyond the dreams of our beloved Father McGivney. We have a highly ethically and financially rated insurance program ready to protect you and your family well into the future. But, it is up to YOU brothers. We have the ultimate responsibility as Knights to protect our families. What s your plan? Do you have enough life insurance? When was the last time you reviewed your life insurance coverage? Have you moved here from another part of the country only to find that it is difficult to get an insurance review? As your field agent and brother Knight, I can help you create a life insurance program to adequately protect you and your family. I can review your current insurance coverage even if it s with another company and offer a professional and ethical opinion. Remember brothers, it s not about us; it s about those we leave behind. 5 PAGE 5 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2014, IS SUE 5 Faithful Navigators Report Sir Knights, Over the past two months the Yard Sale Review Committee, under the leadership of SK Lud Hartung, conducted an in-depth study of our long running Yard Sale. A copy of the report, its findings and recommendations, was given to each Assembly Officer. At the Officer s meeting in September the Review Committee Chairman presented their findings and answered questions posed by the Officers. Under the heading Organization and Management of the K of C Assembly 1820 Yard Sale they recommended, among other things, that the Faithful Navigator Should publish a Mission Statement, Objectives and Purpose of Yard Sales before the next sale in October 2014, and Appoint a Yard Sale Manager, Assistant Yard Sale Manager and a Financial Manager. Therefore, the following is my submission of the Review Committee s recommendation for the Mission Statement, Objectives and Purpose of Yard Sales: Mission Statement Sustain a visible community-oriented venue which provides all members of the Knights of Columbus and all Yard Sale volunteers an ongoing opportunity to collectively exercise Charity, the First Principle of our Order. Purpose To collect usable donated items To prepare these items for public sale or free distribution to those in need or to address emergency requests for these items. To provide a suitable venue for public sale of these items Objectives To maintain an income cash flow to address requests for financial assistance To have an inventory of usable material goods to address requests for these items. Copies of the complete report and Mission Statement, Purpose and Objectives will be made available to all Assembly members and Yard Sale workers no later than the next Assembly meeting to be held on October 8 th. It is our intent to completely review the report, analyze the findings and discuss ways to begin the process of implementing some or all of the recommendations. All comments, observations and recommendations are welcomed. I strongly urge that they be made in writing to the Officers. Remember Prayer Changes Things Vivat Jesus, Vince Fragnito, Faithful Navigator 19th Annual Andy s Special Olympics Spaghetti Dinner It must be October! 6 PAGE 6 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2014, IS SUE 5 4 th Degree Remembers 911 The Knights of Columbus participated at the 9-11 ceremony at St. Paul Catholic School. The KC Color Corps brought in the Colors, presented the flag to eighth grade students, Matthew Bonnici and Nash Ebbinge, who raised the flag at half mast. The flag, donated by former Pastor Father Dan Oschwald, had flown over the Capitol in Washington, D. C. Everyone said the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by singing the Star Spangled Banner, led by Bill Rogers and his fifth grade class. Jim Anderson, Principal, read the history of Pastor Father Tully led everyone in prayer and gave a special blessing for all service personnel and police and firefighters. To conclude there was a moment of silence, as everyone left in silence and reverence, for all those who lost their lives. 7 PAGE 7 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2014, IS SUE 5 (con t from page 1) bingo session here every Monday night which is a fundraiser for our charitable donations. Dodson works in the kitchen for the event which offers $2,500 in prizes each week and begins at 6 p.m. at the Knights on Pine Street. Fragnito and many in the Assembly also work at the bingo and he said, The Assembly is patriotic arm of the Knights of Columbus, the up-front arm of the Knights as the color guard in parades and opening events like the Special Olympics. In our own right, Kenneth I. Parker Assembly runs the major yard sales three times a year where we raise most of our money, said Fragnito, who has been Knight since The money is mostly spent on the charities including Religious Community Services (RCS), Special Olympics, Coastal Women s Shelter, Eastern Pregnancy Information Council, MERCI Clinic, and others. All together, it makes quite a long list, Dodson said. People make an appeal and many of the requests are brought by Brother Knights who find some situations out by being involved in the community. We just provided some money for the Interfaith Refugee Ministries for a home fire, Dodson said, and deal with other special needs as they come up like ARC of Craven County, and a young child with cancer. Asked what motivates them to become Knights, since they are already involved in various missions of their church and denomination, Fragnito said, Main purpose is to find some way to give back for all the blessings I have in my life. Some of the things I do in conjunction with Knights of Columbus is work at RCS soup kitchen with my wife. It s a humbling experience to be able to give of yourself to people in need. The New Bern Council has accepted the invitation to host the Knights of Columbus North Carolina convention next May from May 15 to May 17, Saint Joseph Carries Jumper Cables Events over the past few years in my life have led me to an unexpectedly rejuvenated role as dad and grandpa. In the process my morning prayers now include a brief intercession to Saint Joseph. It goes like this. Blessed Saint Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family help us in our trials today. You know the game plan, who we are and where we ll be. Amen. Two things stand out about this often overlooked spiritual role model. One is obviously Joseph s humble willingness and faith to be open to his role in the mysterious Divine plan which was revealed to him in a dream. The other, and for me equally significant characteristic of Joseph, is that he was a simple everyday man doing his best to follow God s plan. Joseph remains a relatively anonymous figure. Other than being described as a carpenter by trade, there are no recorded words of Joseph in scripture. No mention of shining halos. More than a few times, seemingly out of nowhere, Joseph has come to our rescue. Like yesterday, when Rita and I were in town with a list of stops on the agenda, we came out of the doctor s office and found the car wouldn t start. While we were anxiously discussing our dilemma, this gray haired gentleman dressed in jeans and a sweaty tee shirt stepped out of his pickup and offered to help. I think it s the battery I stammered. No problem, he answered I ve got some jumper cables, let s give it a try. Seconds later the engine was running again and the man was unhooking his cables. I shook his hand and offered to pay him for his kindness. He shook his head, and said. No thank you. It was my pleasure. As he turned and walked away, I thanked him again, and asked his name. He waved, Name s Joe. You folks have a nice day! No telling how many folks Joseph had to jump start that day.--pgk Mikie Casem
