1 Knights of Columbus Council 764 Brother Knights, GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE This will be my last article for the fraternal year, but depending on the newsletter status going forward, hopefully not my last as Grand Knight. The Council re-elected me as Grand Knight and I am honored by the faith and trust that you have put in me. Many of the other officers were also re-elected and I thank them and the newly elected officers for their service to Council 764. I believe we have had successful year and hope to continue that in the coming year. During this past year we held new events such as the Mardi Gras party, Clergy Appreciation dinner, the Rosary Ring hand-out and Family Game Night. We also continued holding the monthly Pancake Breakfasts, Lenten Fish Frys, Mystery Dinner Theater, Parish Picnic, Keep Christ in Christmas card sales, Chocolate Easter Egg sale, children s Soccer Challenge and Free Throw contests, Essay Contest and others. Please let me know of any ideas you have for new events or how we could improve existing ones. Some ideas that have been proposed but not yet put in place are an Oktoberfest night, pot-luck dinners, and an annual Knights Memorial mass. Of course, any new events will require volunteer support from our members. During May our Council along with other Councils and Assemblies in the area hosted the Clergy Appreciation dinner for the Catholic Clergy and Religious of the Catholic Parishes and Catholic Community of Northern Alabama. We had approximately 40 invited guests attend and another 80 paid attendees. Those attending enjoyed an excellent prime rib dinner and lovely piano and harp music performed by Miss Elizabeth Boulet. There were four Knights of Columbus State officers in attendance including State Deputy Pete Parrish. Father Kevin Bazzell delivered an entertaining and thoughtful after dinner speech. This event was very well received and we will most likely do it again. Thank you to the volunteers of our Council, the Ladies Auxiliary, and event organizer Brother Mike Rafferty for their many hours of work to make this a success. Also this past month, we added three new members to the Council. John Esneault, Garry Freeman, and Nathan Zurinksy completed the 1st Degree. Congratulations to these gentlemen and please welcome our new Brothers. As you may have heard, our newsletter editor, Brother Lee Heckman, has been accepted into the Deaconate program. This is very time intensive period for those selected, so Lee has requested he step down as editor. I am very thankful for the job that Lee has done the past year in publishing the newsletter. I believe the newsletter is important in communicating the Council s activities especially to those members that are unable to attend meetings. So, we are now in need of a new editor. Please do not wait for a personal invitation to volunteer as I am not sure who has the interest or experience with this. I m sure Lee would be most helpful in getting you started and he has done the hardest part in establishing a format. I hope you and your loved ones have a relaxing and safe summer. 2 Charity - Unity Fraternity - Patriotism Our council has 145 members and approved membership applications from three other men. Fraternity The Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died often prematurely. The Order s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do individual Knights, who last year gave more than 10 million hours of their time to assist sick and/or disabled members and their families. In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and take care of one another.

6 Recent Events Clergy and Religious Dinner: 83 paid plus 39 guests. Guests included priests, deacons & their wives, nuns and monks. Father Bazzell was the guest speaker Rosary Rings: Gave away 2000 pocket rosary/rosary rings Essay Contest for Holy Spirit School; winner received $ gift card. Top three essays will be published soon in one of the weekly bulletins. Top Male and Female 8 th graders from Holy Spirit School each received a $ gift card $ scholarship awarded to attend Catholic High School. Continued quarterly check for $ to the seminarian the council supports Pancake Breakfast in April and May The council donated $ to the St John Vianney Home for retired priests The council donated $ to the Catholic Center for Concern to help purchase clothing racks needed for clothing donated to the center to give to people in need Reminder: With the severe weather season here, members of the Knights of Columbus Disaster Relief Committee will be checking with all parishioners to see if special needs may have to be accommodated during a disaster situation (e.g. tornado damage)

7 Upcoming Events We need volunteers to assist with many of the following events: May 31: Pancake Breakfast Various times throughout the summer help will be needed to spruce up the old Catholic High School Building so it is presentable for the Diocese to sell (cut grass, trim trees/shrubs, touch-up paint, etc.) No June Social Meeting June 16: Council Business Meeting June 28: Pancake Breakfast 18 July: KoC Council 764 assisting with a barbecue at a seminarian appreciation picnic Last weekend in August Christ renews this parish retreat for women; KoC Council 764 may be sponsoring a cookout for one evening to feed the participants September/October: KoC Council 764 will again sponsor the Parish Picnic --- setting it up and providing support during the picnic. Please let the Grand Knight, Brian Lagasse know if you would like to be the head coordinator for this event. November: KoC Council 764 will be sponsoring an Alter Server Appreciation Event

8 New Program in Holy Spirit Parish Bereavement Program sponsored by Stephen Ministry If you know of someone who lost a loved one and is in need of support, please pass on that this new program is available: Starts 15 June at 11:00 in the Church Library located in the Parish Life Center, for a six week program (but people can join at any point of that six weeks) Provides consolation after loss of a loved one through a Christ centered faith sharing group Lunch will be provided For more information call Kathy Heckman (256) or Carolyn Brunty (256)

Evangelization: That Mary's intercession may help Christians in secularized cultures be ready to proclaim Jesus. Holy Father, Pope Francis, Prayer Intentions for June 2015 Universal: That immigrants and refugees may find welcome and respect in the countries to which they come. Evangelization: That the personal encounter with Jesus may arouse in many young people the desire to offer their own lives in priesthood or consecrated life.

10 Notes from: ALABAMA K OF C CULTURE OF LIFE Message Faithful Pro-Lifers: Great News! Alabama House voted 79 to15 to prohibit abortuaries within 2,000 feet of K-12 schools Many thanks to Rep. Ed Henry and Speaker Mike Hubbard for working tirelessly to defend HB527. However: In spite of the gallant efforts by so many of our dedicated prolifers across the entire state, the AL State Legislature adjourned this session late on June 4 th without HB 527 getting a full Senate vote. Thanks to all for your strong effort in prayers, presence, phone calls & s to legislators. Special thanks to all our team who worked so hard representing all of us in front of the Legislature in Montgomery! Plans are now being discussed for bringing the bill up next session. Meanwhile, it is important to keep up our efforts in terms of peaceful PRAYER & PRESENCE at saving God's innocent babies' lives and saving their mothers from the trauma of abortion! One of your benefits as a member of the Knights of Columbus is affordable life insurance and annuity plans for ensuring the financial well-being of your family. Council 764 has completed all requirements for Star Council except for the insurance member quota. Supreme Council will waive the per capita assessment for Star councils. This would save our council approximately $ Purchasing an annuity counts for being an insurance member. KoC Council 764 will pay $50.00 toward an annuity for the first 10 members who apply by June 10. Brothers who became Knights within the past 12 months can start an annuity with only $ and should contact financial secretary John Ofenloch. Brothers who have been Knights for more than a year can start an annuity for an initial investment of $ and should let financial secretary John Ofenloch know they are purchasing an annuity and then contact our insurance agent Logan Lutz. The council will reimburse brothers after the annuity has been purchased.
