The March itself was preceded by a challenging presentation by the double amputee Vietnam Vet Wayne Cockfield who learned the value of life in the midst of war's destruction. The March itself was an inspiring event with hundreds of participants: men, women, and children, Bishop Burbidge and the religious, along with many State Representatives. Hopefully their voices will be heard so that soon Roe v January/February, /23/2011. The event enjoyed an increase in attendance and support by parents, Knights and participants. There were 16 youngsters that participated in girl s and boy s competition within their age groups of 10, 11, 12, 13 & 14. More than 20 parents came out to cheer on the competitors and 12 Knights were there to run the event and ensure that everyone had a chance to participate. The winners will go on to the District games to be held in Havelock on February 27 th at 2:00 PM. Winners from the District event can compete in the State Free Throw Competition to be held on April 2 nd in Burlington at the Fairchild Center Gymnasium. Wade will be repealed and all the little ones in the womb will be granted the same life our beloved mothers gave us.

2 PAGE 2 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2011, IS SUE 1 GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE Brother Knights, By now I hope that you have settled down after the Holiday Season, and are getting back to normal. My wife and I travelled to Connecticut to see our family and enjoyed spending time with them. During our visit I was reminded of why we moved south, after experiencing all the snow and ice they have been blessed with this winter. In spite of the severe weather we were glad we made the trip and spending time with our loved ones. I hope that you had the opportunity to spend time with friends and family during that very special time of the year when we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Now, as we look forward to the second half of our fraternal your, we need to reflect back on what we have accomplished during the first half and what we need to do for the second half. These activities are in addition to the normal programs that you all do so well. The major focus of our basic principle was to establish a Charitable Donations Committee to coordinate and help us choose what charities we need to support and by how much. The committee of past Grand Knights, and Past Deputy Grand Knights has done a great job of organizing this activity. The Columbus Club has made some significant improvements in keeping the facility in good repair and replaced the ceiling tiles to improve not only the appearance, but the acoustics in the hall as well. The Bingo Club has made improvements by obtaining and installing a brand new Bingo Machine in support of our main revenue stream for the Council. We have partnered with the New Bern Civitans Club in helping our brothers in need of ramps to improve their quality of life. The second half of our fraternal year has additional challenges that we will be focusing on by July We need to economize on the costs of distributing the Knightlighter. Increasing the electronic distribution and publishing the paper only every other month, are two ways we are looking at this challenge. We have developed an on-line Calendar that will be available very shortly allowing every Knight to look at our Web Site for important information about Council activity schedules. We have joined with our Assembly Brothers to plan for, purchase, and install a commercial dishwasher for the benefit of all the hard working volunteers who cleanup after our dinners, etc. This activity is well on the way and we will be hearing updates from the committee shortly. We all need to actively participate in recruiting new Knights and involving those who have recently joined us to help them grow in their Knighthood. I am proud of all of you, and the work you do for the Knights and the Community we serve. I am very confident that the second half of our fraternal year will be as successful as the first half because of you, and your spouses, and all the hard work you do. Vivat Jesus! 3 V OLUME 2011, IS SUE 1 Deputy Grand Knight s Perspective Sunday, January 30th is the first day of Catholic Schools week. As I write this, I have just gotten home from the "Taste of Italy" school event for the Parish and community to help fund our Parish school. What a great way to kick off the week. It was a great event. Vince Fragnito and his crew did an outstanding job and as always the response of the people was heartfelt. I think that this event fulfilled one of Msgr Lewis' wishes that these events be "Parish wide Events" and not just school events. After all, it is our parish school. I saw many people I'd never seen before from throughout the Parish volunteering to get this job done. It was a true rally for our school. Parents, students, Knights, Catholic Daughters, and brothers and sisters who are here to help succeed in continuing the tradition and greatness of Catholic Education. Our Parish School is very important to me, and not just because I'm the parent of two children there. My heart swelled when Father Vic Gournas, at the Jan 30th 11am Mass, mentioned that when he walked into the Family Life Center to eat lunch with the children, he experienced the noontime recitation of "The Angelus". How many of us know the Angelus? I didn't know the Angelus until I witnessed our school children doing it. This is one of K NIGHT LIGHTE R the reasons that my children go to Catholic School. I am building up the Church by making sure that they have the tools to be the next generation of Catholic Christians. Later, as Fr. Gournas spoke about the Beatitudes, he said, They are not what you do, but who you are. I can see that in our Catholic school children. I urge all members to build up the Church, to support Catholic Education and do all you can so that every child in our Parish could be experiencing a Catholic education. In a world that is so anti God, isn't it wonderful when our children have time to give praise and thanks to the Lord. We are so blessed. Finally, remember when you are out thinking of buying a new computer, to donate your old computer to St. Paul Catholic School. The computers there are getting old, but your "old " computer may be newer than what the kids are using. Donate old computers to St. Paul Catholic School. Thanks and blessings to all Vivat Jesus, John La Pointe, DGK APRIL HAPPENINGS 1 - Fri. LAMB Collection, Walmart 2 - Sat. LAMB Collection, Walmart, State Free Throw Championship, Burlington, 12: Mon. Council Officers Meeting Hall 7:00 Knight of the Month Council 3303 is glad to have back in its midst, Brother Jerry Schill. Jerry had been among us several years ago and did a wonderful job. He tells me that farm life in Pennsylvania called him home. He ran a farm in Amish country for a while. Jerry is back and right off the bat took on the job to organize and sell Christmas cards at St. Paul this past Christmas season. This program had not run for several years and only this year made a comeback. PGK Lud Hartung said, in nominating Jerry, "Jerry managed the sale of Christmas cards after all the Masses for 3 Sundays. He had 12 knights working the sale tables. His efforts brought in a gross $882, and a $382 profit to the Council. After an absence of 3-4 years, I believe that we can make Christmas card sales a profitable program. This has happened in no small part because of Brother Jerry's leadership in this revived program. It is programs like this and Knights like Jerry that make membership in our Order enjoyable and worthwhile." Because of Jerry's efforts and of those Knights that worked with him, this year s renewal of the Christmas card program was a success. Let it be said that for the Month of December, 2010, Msgr Jones Council 3303 names Jerry Schill as the Knight of the Month. 4 Bishop Burbidge Visit Bishop Burbidge visited St. Paul Catholic School in January during National Vocation Awareness Week. It is the policy of the Bishop to visit each Catholic school in his Diocese, at least once every three years. The Bishop had lunch with Msgr. Lewis, Mrs. Morse, the interim principal, the teachers, and the staff at the school. After lunch, the Bishop visited each classroom to talk with the students. Before the Bishop left, all of the students, Msgr. Lewis, and the school staff attended a Vocations Prayer Service, led by Bishop Burbidge. 5 V OLUME 2011, IS SUE 1 Notes from the Faithful Navigator To Sir Knights and their families, I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! We had a very successful year in 2010 because of our three yard sales. The 4 th Degree is very fortunate to have such a great group of people who work these sales every year putting in an enormous amount of time. As your Faithful Navigator, I wish to thank everyone for their dedication to this project, especially Danny Gennantonio and his Colonel Fred Amend, his Private, Bill Elliott and Kit Lalonde. The yard sales are our primary source of income and make it possible for us to support a number of charities. Our Wounded Warriors Program that was co-chaired by Sandy Stewart and Richard Tomasik was very successful. To date, $4,000 from collections at St. Paul, Assembly members and $361 from the Riverside Homeowners Association has been received. All monies received were sent to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, NC to help send our wounded service men home for the holidays. Any money remaining in the program is then used to send a wounded warrior home when an emergency arises. The Assembly thanks Sandy Stewart and Richard Tomasik for their hard work and Monsignor Lewis for his support. 6 PAGE 6 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2011, IS SUE 1 WOUNDED WARRIORS Father Kenneth I. Parker Assembly th Degree Knights of Columbus are again collecting donations for the Wounded Warriors Leave Program. All monies collected are being sent to the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Statewide the Knights collected $68,000. last year. Money is collected continuously to provide, not only funds for Christmas visits, but for other emergency leave expenses. When Paul Gauthier, from St. Paul Parish, was aware of this fund he took it upon himself to help. Gauthier was at a Historic Riverside Homeowners Association Progressive Dinner and passed the hat. The Association generously said they would match the funds collected to a certain amount. Sandy Stewart, Co-Chair Wounded Warrior Program Pictured are Sir Knight Sandy Stewart (co-chair), Faithful Navigator Jim Whetzel, Paul Gauthier and Sir Knight Rich Tomasik (co-chair) as Gauthier is presenting a check for $365. WOUNDED WARRIORS Thanks to Msgr. Lewis, the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus were able to do an exit collection at all Masses on December 4 th and 5 th.. This collection was for the year round Wounded Warriors Leave Program. This is a state wide program in which the Knights play a major part. In 2009 there were approximately 130 service personnel that were wounded warriors at Camp Lejeune and Ft. Bragg. Not only are the funds used to get them home for Christmas, but also in cases of emergency leave for funerals, etc. Thanks to everyone s generosity we were able to collect $ All funds collected were sent to the Military Order of the Purple Heart of N. C. For more information go to Wounded Warriors Leave Program for N.C. In the spring, watch for a fund raising dinner to benefit the Wounded Warriors. I would like to share part of an article by SK Bob Singer, Vice Supreme Master for the DeSoto Province regarding the Wounded Warrior Program. The one really bright area for this year is the results of the Wounded Warrior Program. As of December 24, 2010, the Knights of Columbus have been responsible for raising $66,615. This is a New Annual Record and it couldn t have come at a better time. As of December 24 we have sent 363 Wounded Warriors home for the Christmas Holiday. I don t know just what we spend on the 363 Warriors, but I do know that our account is exhausted now. For this reason we need to continue to raise all the funds we can to be able to meet our goals of sending all Wounded Warriors home next year for Christmas. Our previous years have had no more than 160 Warriors needing our assistance. You can see things are looking worse for these Warriors and we need to step up to the plate. I WANT TO PER- SONALLY THANK ALL WHO HAVE WORKED TO RAISE OUR FUNDS AND I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THE WOUNDED WARRIORS ARE VERY APPRECIATIVE ALSO. I want to personally thank those Pastors who have allowed the Knights of Columbus to speak to the Parish about the Wounded Warriors Program and solicit funds. This seems to be the most positive way to raise funds. Any questions or if you would like to make a donation please call SK Sandy Stewart at (252) New Years Dance 2010 The New Years Eve Dance on Friday Dec 31, 2010 was a very well planned and executed event as we closed out the first half of our fraternal year. Our Chef, Dena Sierocki, her husband Walt and her kitchen helpers did an excellent job with the food and beverages. The hall was decorated superbly by Priscilla Dodson and her helpers Rose Bottcher, Cindy Gennantonio, Dot Minervini, Nancy Tomasik, Lyn Rocco and Dotty Dunham. The spouses helped by staying out of the way so the Knight s Ladies could get the job done. Music was provided by a DJ and folks enjoyed dancing to all their favorite tunes. A group of folks from Fairfield Harbor, who were excellent dancers, entertained us with their fancy footwork and line dancing. Although we could have accommodated more guests, the approximately eighty guests that attended enjoyed the evening and a good time was had by all. It sounds trite and we ve heard it many In the first seven (7) months of the times before but it is what makes us current fraternal year (July 1, 2010 Feb. 1, 2011), the combined efforts of who we are, the hands and feet of Christ for others. Some of the recipients include St. Paul Parish and school, Special Olympics, EPIC (Eastern Pregnancy Care Center) and funding for S.T.A.F.F. House, MERCI Clinic and RCS. Included in this total is over $13,000 which was collected and will be distributed as part of this year s annual LAMB Program where funds go to organizations and services that support the physically and mentally challenged citizens of the tri-county area and throughout the state. Also proceeds from the popular Fourth Degree Yard sales contribute to the funding of charitable causes funded by the Knights. In addition, whenever possible, the Knights donate yard sale items to folks who are unable to purchase them, such as the refugee families sponsored by area churches. Mid Term Report Card on Knights Charitable Efforts: WOW! PICTURES from The Pro Life Rally Council 3303 s ongoing Prescription Drug Program is in its 6th year and is approaching $2 million in providing free or reduced cost prescription drugs for qualified indigent applicants. Also this year s annual Thanksgiving canned food collection provided a Turkey Dinner basket meal for two dozen needy area families. At the direction of this year s Council 3303 GK Leo Minervini, Jr. a Charitable Funding Review team was established for the twofold purpose of growing our charitable giving and streamlining the process of handling charitable requests. As the year has unfolded, the Fourth Degree Assembly 1820 and Council 3303 have combined their efforts in this process. This joint effort has minimized redundancy and expedited our shared response to charitable requests. But all of these good deeds obviously don t just happen.
