Parker Assembly 1820, New Bern, NC VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 12 December, 2009 ANNUAL DINNER FOR WIDOWS This year our Widows Dinner was the best ever, We had a great turn out, great food, and great fellowship. Also, as is our custom we held the final drawings for our 300 Club. This produced some real big smiles on the faces of the individuals who won. We were pleased that 20 Widows were in attendance and a total of 124 people celebrated at this once a year remembrance. Our Family Director James Whetzel and his wife Rosemary continue again to orchestrate a wonderful event that was enjoyed not only by the Widows themselves but also by all who took part in this, Remember Our Widows Night Out. 2 PAGE 2 KNIGHTLIGHTER VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 12 GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE What a beautiful time of year, the weather is not too hot or too cold. This part of the country, in my opinion, is an ideal place to live. We still enjoy the Four Seasons and can look ahead with the odds being in our favor that we probably won t be shoveling snow this winter and won t be washing salt off the car anytime soon. That is if we stay in this area as the winter months go by. Being from Upstate New Year really lets you appreciate this area all the more. We have lived here for 14 years and haven t seen a winter yet. You folks from the North know exactly what I m talking about. 1-Fri. NEW YEAR S DAY 4-Mon. Bingo Council Hall 5-Tue. Council Business Meeting, 7PM Council Chambers 11-Mon. Bingo Council Hall 12-Tue. 1st Degree Exemplification Council Chambers The holidays are right around the corner. Family and friends will be visiting not to mention all the wonderful meals and celebrations we can expect in the next few months. The new year will be here before you know it with all our well intentioned resolutions that we plan on accomplishing in the upcoming year. I think that most of those resolutions are started right after that last big New Year s Dinner event so we don t miss out on any of those goodies that are offered to us and are so hard to say no to. For most of us it truly is a glorious time of year but, for some not very pleasant at all. Not everybody looks forward to the holidays. For some it means a real stressful time for a variety of reasons, which can range from time constraints to family differences to financial concerns. Whatever the reasons might be, a little bit of sensitivity awareness towards others during this time of year should be exercised. Treating others as you would like to be treated is the key here. Following this rule will keep you in the safe zone. We all, to a certain extent, plan ahead to keep this busy time of year in control or should seriously consider it. JANUARY HAPPENINGS 13-Wed. 7 p.m. 4th Degree Business Mtg. Council Chambers 18-Mon. I feel that as Knights we already have a planning ability built into our being. The reason I say this is because of the very reason we became Knights in the first place. By following our principles and staying in communion with the church we are planning for our future. Not necessarily the one here on earth but a far more important one with our Creator. Brothers, from my home to yours, have a very Blessed and Glorious Christmas and may the Christ Child Bless You and Your Family with all the Joy and Happiness this New Year can hold. It gives us an opportunity to think about them and recall good times we spent together in the past. It also gives us a chance to say Hello and Merry Christmas and mean it. Even some of our Jewish friends send us Christmas Cards, many with religious pictures, and we in turn send them Happy Hanukah cards in respect for their beliefs. The real point is that these small gestures make a statement to others that we recognize the religious aspect of the season and we really don t care if we are not politically correct. We ll leave that to the politicians to deal with, as they have done so well with many other aspects of our lives. Lately I have been receiving a flood of s with one common theme, namely the way some folks are viewing Christmas and the true meaning of the Season. Add to that the idea that somehow it is not proper to use the word Christmas in schools, public buildings and even Manger Scenes are being discouraged or even outlawed in some places. To those who believe that this is the right course of action, I suggest that they examine their conscience and search their souls to come up with a better reason for celebrating the sizes 36 regular, 40 long and 50 regular. These would be for 4 th degree Sir Knights and are free of charge. If you have any items like tuxedos, tux shirts, any Regalia items (from the Color Corps) you would like to donate please call Danny. This is a great help for some Knights. For more information please call Danny at and under free, with a $ maximum price per family. Also they will have an exciting silent auction. Get a group of friends and neighbors together for a fun filled afternoon. Please come and support St. Paul Catholic School. For information or tickets please call the school at (252) or evenings call Kate LaPointe (252) Sandy holiday at all. I also believe that their rights end where my rights begin and as for me and my family, we will continue to celebrate Christmas and recognize that it is the Birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior that we are celebrating. The Knights of Columbus give us a chance to meet with and profess our faith openly with other Catholic gentlemen who believe as we do. For that I am eternally grateful and most proud to be a Knight. To the politically correct non-believers I would ask, Who will you turn to at the end of your life? I suggest that you pray to Jesus Christ, because He will never abandon you. Merry Christmas Brothers! Vivat Jesus! 4 PAGE 4 KNIGHTLIGHTER VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 12 Notes from the Faithful Navigator I hope you all had a Blessed Thanksgiving and did not eat too much turkey and trimmings. We all know it is not about the food. It is about being with family and friends we care about. Since I was away, I have not heard about the turkey dinners we provided. I am sure they all went well as they usually do. It was so pleasing to see the turn out we had of our Color Corps along with our Faithful Friar, Msgr. Lewis and other Knights, for the retirement ceremony of Father Bill Lesak. Father Bill was the U. S. Navy Catholic Chaplain at Marine Air Station, Cherry Point. There were several other assemblies represented as well as our District Master Sir Knight Bob Grabasky. Also present was the Vice Supreme Master Sir Knight Bob Singer. It was truly an inspiring ceremony followed by a reception. The Honor Guard saluted, with swords, as Father Bill was piped ashore for the last time. It reminded me of when I was piped ashore 32 years ago. The following Sunday, Father Bill celebrated at Annunciation Church in Havelock, his first Mass as a civilian. Again we had a good representation of the Color Corps plus other Sir Knights. The reception that followed provided an opportunity to socialize with other Knights and their families. Father Bill is the North Carolina District Friar for the 4 th degree of the Knights of Columbus and has been a good friend of the Knights. I was also very pleased with the Color Corps and other Knights that turned out for the Veterans Day Mass on November 11 th. Thanks to Msgr. Lewis for also having this Mass as a tribute to our Veterans. Additional thanks to the St. Paul Catholic School Choir for the beautiful singing of patriotic songs. We hope the school children were impressed with the special Mass, the Color Corps and the Knights. As we look forward to the Celebration of the birth of our Lord, we must continue to support our Church and the less fortunate among us. We really have to realize that together we can accomplish great things. It is important to remember we are all Brother Knights, whether we are 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd or 4 th degree Knights. Everyone needs to continue working to help our community grow and prosper. It is important to help insure the American Dream is still available to everyone, no matter what the race, ethnic origin or religious persuasion of the individual might be. I look forward to seeing everyone at the December 9 th meeting at 7 PM. Please attend and let your voice be heard. As always, if you are interested in learning more about the Color Corps, our Commander Donald Monk will be there at 6:30 PM. Again if you need a ride please call Sir Knight Denny Colbert Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. God Bless, Sandy Stewart Faithful Navigator December Family of the Month - Claudia & David Rose Our Family of the Month for December is Claudia and David Rose. Claudia and David have lived in New Bern for 20 years. David moved here from Baltimore, Maryland in 1990 and Claudia moved here from Morristown, N. J. in They have been married for 17 years and have two boys, Christian and Owen. Christian was a graduate of St. Paul Catholic School and is currently attending West Craven High School. Owen attends St. Paul Catholic School. Claudia and David are very active parishioners. Claudia volunteers at St. Paul Catholic School on a regular basis. In addition, Claudia heads up the children s liturgy program at the 11 AM Mass on Sunday morning. Both help where and when needed at Church and school functions. David helps Claudia on Sunday at the 11AM Mass with the children s program. David became a 4 th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Oct He is an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He, along with his two boys, collected for Operation Lamb. Thank you Claudia and David for all that you do for the Church, School and the Knights of Columbus.

5 VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 12 KNIGHTLIGHTER KNIGHT of THE MONTH: Bill Camp Brother Bill Camp was chosen as the Knight of the Month for November He is happily married to Ginger, who is a member of the Catholic Daughters at St Paul. He has been a Knight for 47 years, most of the time in other Councils but he has been a part of Council 3303 for 4 years. He and Ginger have found a home in New Bern and love it here where they have been involved and shared themselves in many charitable activities. He is proud to participate in the 4 th degree yard sale, bingo on Monday nights and has been a store captain as well as a collector for Operation Lamb. Most recently he singlehandedly ran the program that collected over $1,900 for the Room at the Inn program primarily from fellow Knights in the Council. He is currently an officer in Council 3303 and is still looking for other areas to challenge him. Programs Director s Update This is the first of what will be a monthly update of all that we have done or will be doing in the months to come. As a Knights member, you already know that all of our programs are for the benefit of our community, church and school. I would like to thank everyone who has participated in all of our events which helped make them successful. As you know, we are always looking for volunteers to help with some of our events, from setting up tables to working in the kitchen etc. So I am proposing a two team set up consisting of 8 people each, and a leader for each team. The leader of each team will be responsible for scheduling, on a rotating basis, his team to an assigned function when needed. Please contact me if anyone is interested in forming the teams. We are having a NEW YEAR S EVE DINNER DANCE, at our hall. The HOLIDAY BASKETS PROGRAM Our Council and Assembly kicked off the Holiday season with another successful food drive to help feed the needy families of the New Bern area. This year Bill Zachman and Walt Sierocki headed up the committee to gather and deliver the food provided by our Council/Assemb;y members and local businesses. This year we provide Thanksgiving Baskets for 13 families which totaled around 70 people. Working with the Craven County School District, twelve of the baskets were distributed by the Brinson Memorial Elementary School. One additional basket was requested by the staff at St. Paul Catholic Church for a Walt and Bill with the donations. family in the Parish. We should be proud of the efforts of our Council and Assembly to help relieve some of the suffering and stress felt by members of our communities during these difficult times. PAGE 5 He recently indicated that he is interested in helping Walter Bock with the MERCI Clinic program and the Prescription Drug Program. If that is not enough he has his sights on assisting with meals on wheels and the S.T.A.F.F. house for pregnant women. He is a great example of the adage that if you have something that needs to be done, give it to a busy man. If you go to mass at 5:00 on Saturdays you can also find him singing in the choir and assisting as an usher. Thank you Bill for all you do! Vivat Jesus! Leo Minervini, DGK event will be from 6 PM till 12 AM. Doors will open at 6PM and dinner will be served at 6:45 PM. Your ticket price will include hors d oeuvres, a prime rib dinner, beer, wine and soda. 6 VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 12 KNIGHTLIGHTER From the Field Agent: Success Linked to Ethics A poll of Americans and high-level business leaders proved what Knights of Columbus insurance agents have known for generations: religious beliefs and values should be an integral guide to business decision making. Those surveyed also revealed they believe personal and corporate gain drives executives decisions. Overall, they believe, as do the majority of the executives polled, that the moral compass of corporate America points in the wrong direction. Only 19 percent of Americans would award corporate America a grade of A or B for its honesty and ethical conduct. Forty percent of these respondents had the banking and financial industry in mind when answering. The positive side is that 75 percent of Americans surveyed believe that it is possible to be successful and ethical in business. They also believe that high ethical standards strengthen a company s advantage over its competitors, in both the short- and longterm. Additionally, more than 90 percent of people strongly consider a company s reputation for honesty and ethical conduct when considering whether or not to invest with them. COUNCIL 3303 WINS SUPREME AWARD At the December Monthly Business Meeting, Past State Deputy John Gouldie presented Council 3303 the K of C with the Supreme s Star Council Award for the fraternal year from Supreme Grand Knight Carl Anderson. This is the highest honor that the Order s Supreme Council in New Haven, CT. bestows on a Council. The accolade officially recognizes that the Council met or exceeded all of its activity and service goals set by Supreme. Specifically, this means Council 3303 met or exceeded requirements in new membership quotas, insurance, and activity planning and implementation in each of the Council s five Service Programs: Church, Council, Membership, Youth and Community. This prestigious recognition is difficult to attain. In the sixty year history of our Council we have garnered this honor only a handful of times. The award was presented to last year s Grand Knight Mikie Casem who accepted it on behalf of the entire membership. PAGE 6 Nearly two-thirds of those polled believe corporate leaders should rely on their religious values for guidance in the business arena. In this tough economic climate, it s of paramount importance that all Knights are reminded of the moral, ethical commitment of the Order to serve its members and their families. Earning just a passing grade is not acceptable to me or the other professional insurance agents of the Knights of Columbus.
