The Knightlighter The Official Publication of the Knights of Columbus Council 3303 New Bern, NC January, 2008 Brothers All, Fraternity/Brotherhood Earlier today an event took place which was exhilarating and humbling. A brother of ours who is quite ill, but on the mend we pray, was inducted to both the Third and Forth Degrees. The degrees were conducted at his home to save him the effort of traveling. While slightly informal compared to the normal exemplifications, the conferring of Degrees took place at his request should he not survive the illness. The story began during the visit of a brother Knight, one of several visits this good man made to help the homebound brother pass the time and to give comfort of the fraternal relationship. Once the need for the exemplifications was understood, this Knight went into action by contacting the State leadership. Word has it that it took about fifteen minutes to get the full concurrence of State and establish a timetable for the ceremonies. And so, this morning the Past State Deputy, current State Deputy, State Warden, our District Deputy, and a number of men from both Council 3303 and Kenneth L. Parker Assembly gathered to confer and witness these exemplifications. A level of fraternity in action existed which is seldom experienced. My writing abilities are not sufficient to convey the emotion which existed in the room; we only wish all of our Brothers could have been observers. Then, at a time when we all thought that the morning could not be any better, this ill brother asked what he could be doing for the Knights. Considering the circumstances he decided that, being homebound, he would be point man for the brothers in need. He requested, following the monthly meeting, that he be given the list of names for which we pray. His offering is to contact these men and share the fraternal spirit. What a lesson! Yes, we pray at each meeting for our brothers in need. Perhaps a greater effort to stay in contact and personally stay in touch is what we need to be doing. May I ask each of you to reflect on our Brotherhood and see if there isn t some opportunity for you to reach out? 2 hold a special collection for the Wounded Warriors Program. The State Deputy SK John Gouldie has requested Honor Guards for State Council meeting on January in Greenville, NC. The Coastal Plains Assembly 1899 will coordinate for this meeting. Page 2 Worthy Sir Knights, I would like to start out by wishing all SK's and their Families A Very Merry Christmas and A Happy, Healthy and Blessed New Year. We have accomplished many things this year and you SK's made this happen. Our Yard Sales have been outstanding and the income has allowed us to donate monies to the various organizations who need our support. In this coming year I know that we will continue to provide assistance to these needy causes. I know that we have sent $ to the fund raiser for a TV at the Fayetteville VA Hospital. We also have donated $ for the Wounded Warriors Program, but in the December, "Golden Plume", our new VSM Bob Singer stated that the Chapel Hill Assembly # 3395 collected over $ with a special collection at their church for this program. This makes me wonder why we can't do the same here at St. Paul's Church. We need to talk to Father Ernest to see if we can The 2008 Exemplification will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Greensboro Airport on Saturday October 25, Those who are planning to attend should mark that date on your calendar. There will be a District meeting in the Spring (either March or early April) to nominate three candidates for the position of District Master. SK Bob Grabasky-DM appointment will end in August 2008 as he was appointed to complete the remaining year of the New VSM term. Once again "tis the Season" to Keep Christ In CHRISTmas. Remember to wish others A Merry Christmas and A Happy and Blessed New Year. Let us show others the true meaning of the season. Let us keep all of our SK s and their families who are ill or in distress in our Prayers along with all of our Armed Forces Personnel. Vivat Jesus, Budd Rancatore Faithful Navigator DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT S PERSPECTIVE For me, today Friday Dec. 28, 2007, was my most exhilarating and at the same time humbling experience in 37 years as a Knight. I was privileged to gather with a handful of Brothers Knights at the home of our former Council Membership Director, John Gray. The group included DD Lud Hartung, GK Tom Hartman, Tom Fitzpatrick, and past and present Council 3303 and Fr. Kenneth I. Parker Assembly 1820 Officers, Danny Gennantonio and Bill Pake. Also with us was Field Agent Vinnie Doguardo. We were joined by State Warden Mike Durbin from Havelock and State Deputy John Gouldie and District Master Bob Grabowski both of whom traveled to New Bern from the Raleigh area for this very special occasion. Just one week earlier, Brother Gray who is house bound, battling Cancer, expressed a very strong wish to someday have the opportunity to receive his Third Degree. One or two phone calls and the true spirit of service and fraternity in our Order on several different levels, sprung quickly

into action. Thanks to the unselfish and caring spirit of our State Officers who made time to travel here during this busy season, today s special occasion was not only to present Brother Gray with an opportunity to be exemplified with his Third Degree, but with his Fourth Degree as well. In touching and very abbreviated ceremonies, Worthy Sir Gouldie bestowed Brother Gray with Third Degree honors, followed by Worthy Sir Grabowski who then exemplified Brother Gray into Knighthood as a Fourth Degree Member. Words cannot express the extreme gratitude and honor that Brother Gray and his family feel for what his fellow Knights have done for John. May I likewise say, I too shall never forget this day. Vivat Jesus! DGK, Mikie Casem Chancellor s Report Brothers we have made it through yet another year. The time between Thanksgiving and New Years just about went by in a blur. We now face a new year filled with resolutions, promises, hopes for better things to come and hopes the good Lord will keep us in his favor. Some of us might be thinking what can I do to make this year the best ever. Maybe try or do something different or possibly do more of something I really enjoy. The choice is really ours to make. We realize that there are three different kinds of people in this world; those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened. Brothers, since we are all part of a fraternal brotherhood dedicated to the four principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and some of us Patriotism, let us all in this new year play a greater roll in our order. There are openings in a few of our programs that are just waiting to be filled by You. Let s get involved in this new year. A few volunteer hours a month is all that would be needed. Seriously consider this: Come to the business meetings (first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM) and stay abreast of the happenings of our council, this is very important. Operation Lamb will be starting up again this spring, inquire on how you can get involved with this very important fund raiser. We can see that some of our older knights who have chaired our programs for many years are unable to continue, for various reasons. Younger brothers must step forward to fill these vacancies. How will our council otherwise survive? There is a desire in all of us to get involved. We wouldn t of joined the order if we didn t feel that way. I will be waiting for your phone call. Brothers, make, watch, or wonder, the choice is ours. SK Richard Tomasik Page 3 State Convention 2009 As many of you know, K of C State Council selected New Bern for the State Convention, May 14, 15, and asked the Councils of District 2 and Swansboro District 29 to host this event. Council members and their wives from these Councils are asked to help make this event a success and a credit to New Bern. With this in mind I am making an appeal to each of you to volunteer to share in the work on one of the following activities: Registration Raffle ticket sales Banquet arrangements Ladies Activities and Luncheon Youth Activities Hospitality Rooms Advertisement sales I am making a special appeal to the wives to head up and host the Ladies and Youth activities for the visiting wives and younger family members. You can contact our Council s Team Leader, Danny Gennantonio at for more information or e- mail Lud Hartung at ludbev2hartung@embarqmail. com We are asking all new members to take this opportunity to join Council 3303 s team and help with this event. Lud Hartung - Co-Chairman

A Prayerful Reminder: The Annual Rally & March for Life will be held at Nash Square on Saturday, January 12th at 1 P.M. Hopefully our Knights (including the Color Guard) along with family members will join Bishop Burbidge in a prayerful plea for the lives of our little innocent ones. The 35th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade will follow on January 22nd - the birth of the merciless killing of millions of innocent ones that has denied them their right to birth that continues to this day. Reason enough for our prayers and visible support! Rides are available. Call Bart Spano at (Each month I will provide information in this column about our organization. This month I have chosen to provide information about the program United in Charity. Mike Haynes) United in Charity Since its introduction by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson at the 2004 Supreme Convention, United in Charity, the initiative establishing an unrestricted endowment fund to support the long-term charitable goals of the Order, has enjoyed an encouraging response from our members as well as the general public. Shortly after it was established, the urgent need to raise money for Gulf States hurricane relief meant the work of creating an endowment fund had to be temporarily assigned a lower priority until the urgent needs of hurricanes Katrina and Rita had been addressed. Knights of Columbus Charities raised $5.5 million in donations to help families, schools and communities rebuild their lives after the destructive storms. The Supreme Council paid all the administrative costs for this program, allowing 100 percent of every donation to go directly to aid the areas affected by the hurricanes. Now we have refocused our efforts to build this endowment, which will one day provide a steady source of funding for the Order s charitable projects, and not be subject to short-term fluctuations in our ability to raise money for worthy programs. Each year, the Order receives special requests from the Catholic Church and worthy organizations that are closely aligned with its mission. Currently those needs are met from the general fund or, in combination with specific appeals. However, often the demand far exceeds the supply. Your gift to United in Charity will help the Order respond to these many requests and ensure that the goals we champion, and continue to champion, will receive deserving financial support. Please consider making a donation now by mail or online. To the extent permitted by law, your gift is tax deductible in the United States or tax creditable in Canada. Page 6 Also, please consider donating a Knights of Columbus life insurance policy for the benefit of United in Charity, after your family s insurance needs are met. Your Knights of Columbus insurance agent can supply you with a brochure and information on several different ways to provide such a gift. United in Charity has already received several charitable bequests. A remembrance of United in Charity in your will is a significant way to contribute to the good works of the Order and assist the needs of others. The Order s good works inspire confidence a confidence earned by 125 years of service to those in need, for loyalty to the Magisterium of the Church, and faithful adherence to the vision of its founder, the Servant of God Father Michael J. McGivney 125 years of Faith in Action. Thank you for your support of the charitable and philanthropic goals of the Order. Call us with questions at on our toll free line. We are happy to be of assistance. If you would like more information about United in Charity, an unrestricted endowment fund wholly managed, maintained and operated by Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and Knights of Columbus Canada Charities, Inc., a registered charity with the CRA, please contact

Council 3303 has shared it s time, talent, and treasures with Special Olympics - North Carolina, Craven County. We may be proud of the commitment of our membership. It is time to ask that you consider the benefits of sharing your time in a way that provides enjoyment, new friendships, and self satisfaction. Please call or send me an and I will share my knowledge of the program with you. My current focus is on the training for basketball competition in January. There are 8 schools where we need to place a volunteer to work with students to prepare for the events. An orientation meeting, two days at school and the day of competition comprise the program. Knights and their Fair Maiden can share in the fun. Please review the enclosures from (pages 8 &9) SOCC and give Mark or myself a call. Vivat Jesus, Br John Scharf SO Steering Committee (252) Olddog1@embarqmail.com Page 7 We know that we have a large population who has not had the opportunity to participate for a variety of reasons. Addressing this need is what the Special Olympics Steering Committee is addressing. Starting a youth swimming program creates a new opportunity for involvement. What are you doing on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 7:30? Would time in the water helping others learn a new skill be fun? Let us know of your interest. How about basketball, bocce, golf, or cycling? They are other opportunities to apply your talents and have fun while we expand the program in Craven County.

Page 8 Volunteer Information Thank you for taking the time to learn about some of the exciting things going on with Special Olympics Craven County. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round athletic training and sports competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for children from age 8 and adults with mental retardation or closely related developmental disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship. We currently offer over 400 athletes a chance to compete in nine different sports. Local athletes are then given the chance to compete on area and state levels. This can t be done without the help of volunteers. We are currently looking for volunteers to help our athletes prepare for some of our local competitions. The local competitions we have coming up are our basketball competitions in January 16 th, 30 th and February 6 th, and our spring games on May 8 th. To help our athletes train for these events we are asking volunteers to go into the schools or group homes once a week leading up to the events. Elementary Schools - January, 1 st & 2 nd weeks of month - date to be confirmed by school Middle & High Schools January, 3 rd & 4 th weeks of month - date to be confirmed by school Adult Groups contact Mark A list of schools and group homes along with contact, date and time will be made available. Also included in this packet is a description of the events that will be conducted and how to evaluate performance.
