Anderson, Supreme Knight sent a letter to PGK Mikie Casem congratulating all the members of Council 3303 for being designated Star Council for the fraternal year. During the past fraternal year Council 3303 has truly distinguished itself in its Surge with Service programming activities, membership growth, retention and insurance promotion. For these achievements you should be justly proud and find satisfaction in knowing that your council is effectively serving the Church and its com- munity in fidelity to the founding vision of the Servant of God Father Michael J. McGivney. As I congratulate you and your brother Knights, I also want to encourage you to maintain the excellence that we recognize this year, and in so doing merit the prestigious Star Council Award once again in the coming year. Brothers we should all be proud of this accomplishment for this is the most prestigious award a Council can achieve. Let us continue to support our programs and our order with an undying desire to live out our principals as true Brother Knights. We have truly taken a step forward with this award to be recognized as Knights of Columbus. Thank you to all for your efforts! 2 PAGE 2 KNIGHTLIGHTER VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 09 GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE Brothers, are we taking full advantage of our Fraternal Benefits? Some of us aren t really sure on how to answer that question, some will tell you that all it takes is a yearly dues payment and a few volunteer hours a month, while others say, yes we are, and fully understand the benefits available to them. In order to answer this question correctly, let s look back about a hundred and twenty seven years ago and review why the Knights of Columbus were first organized. The Knights of Columbus was chartered on March 29, 1882 with the vision of our founder, now the Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. His purpose was twofold: to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement and closer ties of fraternity among them, and to set up an elementary system of insurance so that the widows and children of members in the group would not find themselves in dire financial circumstances. Now the answer seems somewhat clearer. Yes, it is important to pay our dues for this keeps us in good standing in our Council and it is important to be active members but it goes way beyond that. Some of us might be asking ourselves, how can I learn what my fraternal benefits are and how can I start to take advantage of them? I d like to share some insight on this since I just went through that experience. A few weeks ago I was contacted by John LaPointe a member of our Council and our Field Agent for K of C Insurance. Two thoughts immediately came to mind, as I talked to John, how much time is this going to take and how much is this going to cost me. Then reason settled in and I said to myself, I ve never sat down and spoke with a K of C Agent before and hey, you never know, there might be an opportunity here that could be of benefit to my family and me. We set up an appointment at a convenient time and John mailed me some information to read over before we actually met. The house call was totally a very OCTOBER HAPPENINGS pleasant experience and one that I was extremely glad I took advantage of. John went into detail about numerous programs and plans that are available to us as members of the Knights of Columbus, and at very surprising rates. One thing that really impressed me was the Flexible Premium Annuity that had an excellent track record and some very amazing returns. John actually builds an insurance plan that is right for you and your family. His sales pitch is free from pressure, organized and very timely. He merely gives you the facts and you decide on what you want to do, now that you are aware of the options available. Do you want to become familiar with and take full advantage of all your fraternal benefits? Maybe update existing policies? Don t wait for John to call you. Give him a call in his office at or on his cell at The experience will be incredibly enjoyable and the rewards extremely satisfying. Brothers, keep a rosary in your pocket, a song in your heart and be of service to somebody. Rich Tomasik, GK 1 Thu. Council Officer Meeting Council 5 Mon. 3 VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 09 Deputy Grand Knight s Perspective I have been encouraged with the infusion of new Knights that have joined our ranks in the past year. They all seem like a ready, willing and able group of men who have joined us because they want to be involved with a group like ours. It is up to us, all of us, as Knights to make them welcome and encourage them to become involved in the many activities we have going on. Sometimes it may take a personal contact with our new Brothers to make them aware of the opportunities we have and ask specifically for their involvement and help. I know that many Knights that faithfully attend our meetings may feel overworked, and would welcome some new ideas and some help. If you feel that way I suggest that you take the initiative to reach out Council Looking to Fill Key Positions There are still several key positions within the Council that are vacant. I feel that these positions are crucial to our success. We need our able bodied Brothers to step forward and take one of these positions. Our Council will be better for it. The positions are as follows; Program Director, Church director, Community Director, and Operation Exodus chairman. We are also looking for someone to take over for our Family Director. On the job training is available. Remember our Council is only as good as the members Pro-Life Update Brother Knights have recently been asked to participate in funding a maternity home: "Room at the Inn" in the Raleigh area. For your information, we have a Maternity home in our very own backyard, in River Bend. A new and larger home at 409 Metcalf Street KNIGHTLIGHTER and make a personal contact to our new Brothers and ask for their commitment. I know it s hard to say no when asked personally to become involved, so give it a try and soon they will be the ones asking for assistance. One position in the Council that has gone unfilled for a long time is the position of Program Director. It s a very important position for the Council and is primarily one where a Knight works as a coordinator and leader in making sure the various programs are running well, and offers assistance when able. The other important role is to ensure that the Program Chairman reports at the business meetings, or delivers the report himself, so that the membership is aware of and can participate in the who step forward and take an active part in its programs. Please consider taking one of these positions. If you have the slightest inkling that you are the man for the job or want to take a more active part, please come and see me or any of the Officers and we ll get you started. Don t procrastinate. We are already going on the 4 th month of this fraternal year. Please step forward and be recognized as a Knight of Columbus. Rich Tomasik, GK program activities as needed. If any Knight, new or seasoned, wants to fill that role it would go a long way in helping the Council in its work in the community. It may also be possible to team two Knights together and share the responsibility and fill in for each other as necessary. So to those of you want to do more in the way of service I ask you to consider taking on the role of Program Director. We have experienced Knights who can conduct some basic training to help you get started. 4 PAGE 4 KNIGHTLIGHTER VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 09 Notes from the Faithful Navigator By the time you read this issue we will have had our installation of officers for the Fraternal Year. We have elected a good slate of officers dedicated to serve you. We want to ensure that we serve the Church, the community and the Assembly to the very best of our collective abilities. The next Fourth Degree Exemplification will be held on Saturday, October 24 th in Durham, N. C. We need to start recruiting now! Talk with your friends in the third degree and encourage them to be enrolled in the visible arm of the Knights of Columbus. We cannot be shy about singing the praises of the virtues of Patriotism to our Brother Knights. In this day and age when it seems our beliefs are under attack from within our country and abroad, all of us must do everything we can to ensure that our freedoms Danny from West Virginia and Cindy from North Carolina met in 1955 in the U.S. Air Force. They married in 1956 and moved to New Bern where they raised three children. All of their children attended St. Paul Catholic School, and both parents volunteered in a variety of activities. Danny has been a very active participant in the Knights of Columbus since he joined in As a knight for 43 years, Danny has held most Council offices. He has worked bingo for 31 years, Operation Lamb for 36 years, and was Council Membership Committee Chairman for 16 years. He has personally recruited 440 knights. Danny has worked the Yard Sales for 32 years and currently serves on the Yard Sale Committee. Some of his personal awards include: State Golden Knight of the Year, State Knight of the Year, State Fraternalism of the Year, State Chaplain s Award and way of life survive. for Outstanding Achievement in the State for three years and a Christopher Columbus Statue for Outstanding Achievement in Membership for the State. Cindy became a convert in 1960 and has been active at Church and in helping Danny fulfill his numerous duties over the years. Both have worked the BAA each year, they formed the Parish Welcoming Committee under Msgr. Jones, which they chaired for 17 years. Danny is the Coordinator for St. Joseph Cemetery, and Cindy is his secretary. Cindy is a member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry, St. Paul Quilters, and Catholic Daughters and has served on the Parish Council. At Church, Danny has been a member of Parish Council, is currently a member of the Finance Committee, is an Usher and both are Eucharistic I recently had the pleasure to meet with our new Administrator Msgr. Gerald Lewis. Msgr. Lewis affirmed his support of the Knights of Columbus. In addition he accepted my invitation to become our Faithful Friar. The Assembly confirmed his acceptance at our August meeting. Our thanks are extended to Msgr. Lewis. One thing that was clear, when speaking with Msgr., was he urged the Knights to support our school, St. Paul Catholic School as much as possible. I explained we are supporting the school now but we need to do more where and when possible. This does not mean only monetary support but also volunteer where needed. We all have special gifts which we may share with others, particularly the young students. Please look into your hearts and pray about this. Please contact our Principal, Mrs. Monette Mahoney at if interested. Remember, these are our leaders of tomorrow. I look forward to seeing more attendance at our next meeting, Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 7 pm. Attendance has been picking up but we still have a ways to go. Come out and let your thoughts and opinions be heard on various issues. The meetings are not long, there is always pizza, a birthday cake for the 70 plus gentlemen and the bar is always open. If you need a ride or can provide one please contact SK Dennis Colbert at Also if you are interested in joining the Color Corps, SK Donald Monk, the Color Corps Commander, will be conducting a training session starting at 6:30 pm before the meeting. Please call Donald if you have questions. God Bless, Sandy Stewart Faithful Navigator July Family of the Month - Danny & Cindy Gennantonio Ministers. Danny and Cindy s most recent achievement was in Danny was the Point of Contact for the North Carolina State Convention. He was responsible for recruiting the volunteers, chairpersons and signs for the convention. As usual, Cindy stepped up to the plate and was his assistant. They both gave 110% to help the convention become the success it was. Council 3303 thank you both for the contributions you have made and continue to make to KofC and the Church.

5 VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 09 KNIGHTLIGHTER Council Sponsors Altar Server Picnic PAGE 5 Our Council, at the request of Msgr. Lewis, sponsored an Altar Server picnic in the Family Life Center. On 18 August 48 Altar Servers come out to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, chips, soda and ice cream. The FLC was a perfect setting as the kids played basketball and other games that required a lot of room. Numerous kids came by and shook our hand and thanked us for the good time they had. Nobody went away hungry and all the leftover food was taken to the local soup kitchen. Msgr. Lewis was KNIGHT of THE MONTH: Jack Webb Council 3303 Knight of the Month for September 2009 is Jack Webb. I know that we have all enjoyed many of the excellent meals he and his team prepared over the past few years and as I continued to be associated with Jack I discovered he is much more than an excellent chef. He has been active in many Clubs wherever he and JoAnn lived over the last 40 years. The following examples only touch the surface of his accomplishments and are an example of the difference one person can make when they commit themselves to helping others. In 1966 Jack was President of the Lakeville, NY Lions Club where they With the economy in somewhat of a stable position (according to our government), some people are buying new items at the stores. For those of us who are still not sure of the economy, there is a better place to shop. That place is the Gigantic Yard Sale held by our 4th Degree Assembly. Not only does the money raised from recycling all of the treasures that they collect help the 4th Degree to meet it s expenses, but also allows them the opportunity to help others. Proceeds from the last Gigantic Yard Sale helped to provide some much needed money to Saint Paul Catholic School. Our Council and Assembly are continuing supports of this wonderful program. raised more money than Rochester for the treatment of Glaucoma and other eye disorders. He even traveled with an Ophthalmologist assisting him with testing clients as part of the Lions volunteer work. In 1980 he was recognized by the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce for contributing to the economic growth and stability of that community by significantly expanding his business. When they were trying to raise money to save the firehouse and make it a museum, Jack headed up a Lobster Fest and cooked 1500 Lobsters in one day resulting in a huge success for that community. Jack held positions in the Hilton Head Island The next Gigantic Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2009 from 7am to 1pm. This program is doing real magic. Where else can you make three or more people smile? First, by helping someone de-clutter their life, you make them smile. Secondly, by selling someone something that they need or want, you make them smile. Third, by sharing the proceeds from that sale with others you make them smile. Now, I would call that magic. Maybe the 4th Degree should change the name to The Magical Gigantic Yard Sale Either way, we hope to see you there. present for a little training session and prayer before the kids started eating. He also thanked the Knights for putting on a good time for all. I d like to thank those Knights and Wives who volunteered to help with this event. Elks Lodge and helped put together a workable kitchen for their functions. At present he is a member of River Bend Friends Helping Friends organization where they drive people to the Doctors Office, and give care givers a needed respite. Jack donates his time and talents wherever he can, and has also been known to help people out financially when he is able. He is a great example for us Knights because he cares and gives of himself figuring out how to make whatever organization he belongs to a success. When you see him at the Knights Hall congratulate him for all his accomplishments. 6 VOLUME 2009, ISSUE 09 From the Field Agent KNIGHTLIGHTER PAGE 6 Brothers, A THANK YOU from IRAQ Often, when I pay a visit to my Brother Knights, I come to learn a lot about where they're from and what they did before retirement became a full time job. I learn the names of the new babies in our younger member s families. I know the dogs and the cats. I know which door to knock on. I put the faces with the names and I get to know you a little bit better. Sounds like a great job to me. Why would my Brother Knights, not want a visit from me. I really enjoy meeting Knights and their wives for the first, second or last time. That s right, when was the last time that you met with your primary benefit of membership. I'm the guy who will ask the questions to make you think of your plan. I'm the guy who should disturb you into thinking about the future for you loved ones without you. The plan that will allow those that you leave behind, to live a normal life. A life as normal as it can be without the love of their life. Most brothers don't talk about the plans for the future. Most expect that things will work out, maybe they do. Now is the best time to plan that they do. You'll never be as young tomorrow as you are today. Only God knows when we'll go to him. That s why we need to be ready today. Are you ready? Ready, if you should leave us tomorrow. Ready, if you should live too long. Will I out live my savings? Can I take care of my family when I'm not here? Call your professionally trained Knights of Columbus Field Agent. I'm here as a benefit to you. To answer the questions, to help you to understand what you need and why you need it. To help you to make a plan and provide for those you love when you're not here. In 10 short months, I've cried with too many widows, sisters who weren't ready to let you go. Some of whom have been left with outdated policies and no plans. No idea what they will do. I can only ask to see you. You have to invite me in. Do you think you're all set? Lay it out in front of me and prove it. I would love to congratulate you on your plan, shake your hand and say, "Great plan". Will Rogers once said, a long time ago. "The man, who dies without proper life insurance, should have to come back and see the mess he made." SK John La Pointe Last January we welcomed a new Knight into our Council. We did not know what he would bring into our lives or what we would bring into his. We only knew that he desired to join us in our efforts to be the best we could be. Our Grand Knight, Rich Tomasik received the following from that Knight. Those of you on the system may have already read this, if not please read. Grand Knight Tomasik, I joined the council back in January 2009 before I deployed to Iraq. I am still out in Al Asad, Iraq but will be coming home around 8 September. My wife organized an event for family and friends to send cards expressing their appreciation for the work that we are doing while deployed. She recently gathered all the cards and sent them to me in a care package. The members of Monsignor James R. Jones Council 3303 gave an overwhelming response. I received over 20 cards from the council members and was very humbled to know that my fellow brothers were praying for not only myself but all service members. It was very gratifying to know that I was part of an organization of men that take values like patriotism, faith, and selflessness very seriously. Please accept my deepest appreciation for the time everyone put forth to send the cards to a brother Knight. I look forward to returning very soon and seeing everyone at the October council meeting. Sincerely, Major Dave Joseforsky United States Marine Corps Communion Breakfast A Success On Sunday Aug. 16 following the 8 a.m. Annual Memorial mass for Council Brothers who passed away during the fraternal year, the Council hosted a Breakfast in the Family Life Center. Thanks to Jack Webb and his hard working crew, over 150 delicious breakfast plates were served which included scrambled eggs, sausage links, potatoes and biscuits. Juice, Knights Welcome Sister Grace On Sat. morning Aug. 15 several Knights took the time to gather at the Convent and greet our newest Parish nun, Sister Grace, who drove a U- Haul from Michigan. The Council coffee and rolls were also available. Thanks to the ticket sales for the event, the Council was able to donate $310 to St. Paul Catholic School. Our thanks to all who participated. MC Brothers then unloaded the truck for Sister. Those lending a helping hand included John Audilet, Dick Dodson, Eric Haegstrom, Jim Kelley, Paul May, John LaPointe (& his 2 young daughters)< Danny Gennantonio, Bill Camp, Kit LaLonde and Mikie Casem. We are currently spending about $3500 a year for the Knightlighter to be printed and mailed. After last month meeting I learned that we had not been paid for the ads we were running. The amount that had been charged for the ads would not have come close to paying for the printing. We need the ads to defray the cost of printing and mailing. The current cost for an ad would need to be $240 a year for a business card size. We print 12 times a year and the Knightlighter is posted on our web page. The circulation is 415 printed and ed per month. If you know of anyone who would like to advertise in our news letter please let me know.
