2 PAGE 2 KN IG HT LIGHT ER VOLU ME 2009, ISSU E 03 GRAND KNIGHT S MID-WINTER REFLECTION A few days ago, I was moved by the idea of a totally different approach to my spiritual life. I can t claim originality with this approach, as it was suggested to me several decades ago by a dear friend, Msgr. Tom Wells who knew me quite well. Maybe too well. Anyway, I tucked his advice away at the time and there it stayed all these years. Until the other day when I read them again in a spiritual reflections booklet for Lent. The point here is that it s easy to sometimes lose focus of what Jesus was trying to teach us when we quite innocently take his words too literally. Example, For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. (Luke 9:24). More often than not, we hear a bleak interpretation of these particular words of Jesus. This interpretation declares that true followers of Jesus need to negate the self, to disregard all personal preferences, no time for one self or to have fun. It implies that a Christian life be full of ascetical practices, always putting yourself second, so as not to be selfish to others. But such an interpretation is pure flapdoodle! Jesus words presume that we have a life. You can t lose a life if you don t have one! Any time you feel like you don t have a life, that s exactly the time you need to take some time for yourself. The mature Christian life is cyclic, giving and serving, praying, learning and leisure. Then going back to serve others. In other words, holiness need not always be drudgery or altruistic. Basically, doing fun things should be part of our regular spiritual exercises. What do we say in the Morning Offering Prayer? I offer thee all my prayers, works, joys and sufferings... That s right, joys. How many times have you said that prayer and how many times have you thought about what you re saying? In essence, enjoying oneself, be it a round of golf (or two), a day doing nothing but lounging in a chair and reading a book, or an evening having a few cocktails with a friend can be or rather should be-- an opportunity to celebrate God s Goodness. That s right, an opportunity for prayer. If a life doesn t include both, then something s out of kilter, spiritually speaking. So, after all these years, starting with this current Lenten Season, I m going to give this new approach to my spiritual exercises a shot. I ll let you know how it turns out. Excuse me now. I think I hear a bowl of ice cream calling. Keep the Faith, Mikie Casem, GK Knight of the Month Ed Stepnoski was chosen Knight of the Month for March. He became a Knight in New Bern in the early 1970 s. Msgr. Hadden was pastor at that time and business meetings were held in the old convent which was the building behind the old rectory downtown. Through the years Ed has played a very active part in the council. He has held numerous officer positions including Grand Knight. His handy work and carpentry skills are evident in all areas of our building. He is an individual that can fix anything, which has benefitted the council tremendously. His stay active attitude is truly one which has been noticed and sparks enthusiasm in the younger members. Ed has been active in many church activities. He has served as an usher, taught CCD classes for a few years, worked on the BAA, is a substitute money counter and has used his carpentry skills in many areas of the church as well. Ed has been involved in many school and community functions, raising funds for special projects, scouting, Special Olympics and was a rosary maker. He is an avid trap shooter and enjoys his time on the firing range with his friends. We thank Ed for his achievements and hard work, for stepping up and being a commendable example of what it means to be a Knight of Columbus. KNIGHTS OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Thursday at St Paul Catholic Church after the 8am Mass and ending with Benediction at 12 O clock. All Knights are welcome. The Prayer Book for all Knights and Parishioners who are sick or need prayers is in the Atrium and is placed on the Altar. SK Hugh McHugh "Can You Come Watch One Hour With Me?"

3 VOLU ME 2009, ISSU E 03 KN IG HT LIGHT ER PAGE 3 Deputy Grand Knight s Perspective I couldn t help but think back to our Presidents Inauguration speech in January, the words he used to describe our present situation and what is necessary to turn this country around. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility, he said. I truly hope that the CEO s that squandered their employees retirement funds and got big pay offs as they walked out the door were listening, even if it was from a jail cell. Our President added, greatness is never given it must be earned.. Most of us would never doubt these words, living in the United States. Most of us are hard working, taxpaying individuals that are trying to make a living and support our families. We are and will remain the greatest country in the world. ally need to make the moral decisions necessary that will take this country forward and out of the mess it s in. Companies that maximize their profits for pure greed are not helping anybody, including themselves. Sooner or later, as we have witnessed, that straw that broke the camel s back, did. The power, greed and money combination of some of the most influential people we have in this country has spelled disaster for many. I sure hope we haven t forgotten the work ethics of the early days when a fair day s work brought a fair day s pay. There s no doubt in my mind that we ll be going back to that practice to get this country back on track. We need to get back to the basics. There are always exceptions to doing right or wrong, I suppose, it all depends on how you look at things. Good and evil will always be around us. We have a free will and individudon t penetrate our being, our families our community our state and nation. Everyone must get on the right track, morality is still alive isn t it? This should encompass all sectors of our society, Wall Street, CEO s and Politicians alike. We must all do our fair share to make it work. It s times like this, no matter how trying, that we should be proud of being Knights. Our efforts no matter how far reaching do make a difference. The letters we send to our politicians expressing our moral values, our charitable acts, our donations to the needy all have an impact on the world around us. Just imagine, if the entire world joined in and followed the Golden Rule which was given to us by our Creator then we could focus our efforts in areas that would benefit mankind the world over instead of trying to destroy it. The President went on to say, We have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly. These are only words if they Brothers, keep a rosary in your pocket, a song in your heart and be of service to somebody. Rich Tomasik, DGK SK FRANK O BRIEN SUCCUMBS TO LENGTHY ILLNESS On Monday Feb. 23, after a lengthy illness with Cancer, Frank O Brien, a Brother in Council 3303 and a SK in the Fourth Degree Fr. Parker Assembly 1820, died at the age of 81. Born and raised in the Hastings-on-the- Hudson area of New York, Frank was also a life time volunteer fireman and fire chief for that area. Following high school, where he participated in several varsity sports, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his military service, Frank had a successful career with the Bank of New York. After moving to New Bern with his wife Betty, Frank worked part time for Cotten Funeral Home and Crematory. Frank leaves his wife Betty, one brother, two sisters, 4 children, and eight grand children. On Thursday afternoon Feb. 26 at St. Paul Church where Frank and Betty were long time parishioners, a funeral Mass was presided over by Fr. Ruede. The Fourth Degree Color Guard participated in the Mass and the burial which followed at St. Joseph s Cemetery. Mikie Casem, GK Pro-Life Thank You There are 130 special license plates approved for use, 20 added this year. The Choose Life plate has been locked in committee for over 5 years. The bill establishing this plate would also establish a Crisis Pregnancy Fund which would be distributed to Crisis Pregnancy Centers that provide counseling and other needs of pregnant women. Contact Joe Hackney speaker of the NC House or joeh@ncleg.net and Pres. Pro-Temp of the NC Senate Marc Basnight or marcb@ncleg.net asking them to allow citizens of this state a chance to purchase a Choose Life License plate. Bart Spano Pro-Life Chairman

4 PAGE 4 KN IG HT LIGHT ER VOLU ME 2009, ISSU E 03 Notes from the Faithful Navigator I would like to thank my Brother Knights that attended the visitation and funeral Mass for Worthy Sir Knight Frank O Brien. It was rewarding to see a great representation of both the Third and Fourth Degree Knights honoring a fellow Knight. I particularly would like to thank the Color Corps for responding so well on such short notice. When first speaking to Mrs. O Brien, she expressed her desire to have the Knights attend to honor her late husband and she felt this was accomplished. Responses like this make me extremely proud to be a Knight. We have been invited to participate in the St. Patrick s Day parade in New Bern. The parade will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2009, beginning at 2 pm. It is planned to have the Color Corps lead the way. In addition we would like to have a large turnout of both Third and Fourth Degree Knights. This is especially desired since we are having the KC State Convention in New Bern in May. By putting our best food forward we will State Convention NEWS really make New Bern aware of whom the Knights of Columbus are. For those Knights that have difficulty walking, we are planning on having a truck for them to ride in, with a banner on the side. You should have received a phone tree message plus an regarding this. Please make every effort to participate in the parade. On February 28, we were blessed to have another successful yard sale. In spite of the rain all of the hard work prior to the sale paid off. My personal thanks to the yard sale committee and all of the dedicated men and women From the Membership Committee Congratulations to the two new members of our council that received their First Degree during the month of February: Robert Carman and Anthony Storniolo. Both continued and received their second degree on February 18 th along with Thomas Liddy, Ray Savage, John Spier, John McCrory, and Andrew Herrmann. We are excited to have each of these men with the Council. We hope to have each of these men receive their Third Degree in Jacksonville, NC on March 21, The membership committee continues its recruitment duties and is busy preparing for the upcoming Spring Membership Blitz. We look forward to encouraging our fellow practical Catholic men that membership in the Knights of Columbus is worthwhile and very rewarding. The Membership drive will be during each of the Masses the weekend of March 15 th. We will need a handful of volunteers to hand out/collect information after each of the masses. Perhaps The Knights of Columbus are holding their 2009 State Convention in New Bern on May 15, 16, 17, This convention is supported by the Councils in District 2. We expect over 550 attendees including approximately 200 wives and 50 children. We are in dire need of someone to help organize the activities for the teen and pre-teen children. We have volunteers to assist you. Child care is planned for Saturday, May 16 from 7:00 AM until 10:00 PM. We have two large rooms reserved for who contributed so much time and effort to make this happen. The next yard sale will be June 27, I look forward to seeing all of you at the next Fourth Degree meeting on Wednesday, March 11 at 7 pm. Remember if you need a ride or can provide a ride please contact: SK Dennis Colbert at If you know of someone that has not attended a meeting recently, maybe give them a call and see if you can encourage them to come. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Color Corps or need to refresh your skills, Color Corps Commander Donald Monk will be there at 6:30 pm. No prior experience is necessary. Please remember to pray for the unborn, our military and all of those that need our prayers. God Bless Sandy Stewart Faithful Navigator the Knights who are also ushers could perform this function at their regular Masses.
