2 PAGE 2 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2016, IS SUE 2 This month I want to thank everyone that has worked so hard during March. Our Lenten Fish Fries were all a big success. We held three dinners and served over 550 dinners. Thank you to everyone in the kitchen the cooks, the food preparers, and the cleanup help. Thank you to everyone in the dining hall that setup, served drinks and cleaned up each week. Thank you to the workers that sold tickets and collected tickets. A thank you to DeLesa Conway for all the help you gave to the Knights during this event. Thank you everyone! Without each of you, we could not hold these dinners. You are a great group! It was wonderful to walk around and see so many Church members, their families and friends. We had a record number of families this year, and after dinner, many attended Stations of the Cross. On March 10 th, I attended the ARC of Craven County Award Dinner with my wife. The dinner prepared by Vincent Fragnito and our Knights crew was wonderful. It was made special by having the students of Saint Paul Catholic School serve dinner and clean up the tables. Thank you, Deacon David Kieski for organizing the students and for your attendance. We appreciate Father Tully for saying Grace at this special dinner. Brother John Scharf, who will be leaving the area in the near future, was honored with a Plaque for his dedication and hard work for ARC at their banquet dinner on March 10 th. John will be missed not only by ARC but by this Council. We wish John and his family health and happiness as they return to Michigan. The Council will need to find a replacement for Brother John Scarf. If you are interested, please let me or one of your officers know. If you are not able to attend the Saint Paul School Gala on April 9 th, please consider making a donation. The children of the school need our support as they are the future. Checks may be made payable to Saint Paul Catholic School and mailed to: 3005 Country Club Road, New Bern, N.C Please write on the check that it is for the 2016 Gala Fund. Mark your calendars for the following events: April 9 th St. Paul Catholic School Gala at New Bern Riverfront Convention Center. April 24 th Founders Day Breakfast at the. Grand Knight s Comments Brothers as we prepare for the Lenten Season, let s not just give up a favorite food or dessert; let s ask ourselves what we can do for the sick and poor. Vivat Jesus! Jim Whetzel, Grand Knight Knight of the Month The Knight of the month for April is Fred Nelson. Fred became a Knight in 1989.Prior to this, he served in the U.S. Army. Fred loves to cook and you can always find him helping out at Bingo plus cooking at other events. He works to keep the hall up and saved the Knights a lot of money while working on the air conditioner. In his spare time, Fred likes to fish and crab. Basically Fred will volunteer for any job, he can do when asked. We would like to thank Fred for all he does for the Knights. Please keep up the hard work. GOD BLESS YOU. Philip Nassef, DGK

You can find Ralph in the lounge area as he manages the bar and keeps everything in order. He works Bingo every Monday night in the kitchen and helps out at all of our functions. Ralph will be in charge of the yard sales for the next year. You can always find Ralph somewhere in the building taking care of the place. In addition Ralph gives of his time volunteering at the Red Cross and travels to locations out of town. Gerry is always at his side helping out whenever she can. She was a big help at the fish frys this year. Gerry works at the antique table at the yard sale. Thanks for jobs well done. Nick Dalessandro, Family director 5 th Sunday Rosary Service This is part of a nationwide service the Knights hold when there are 5 Sundays in a month. Everyone is welcome to join the Knights in this meaningful service. The next Service will be May 29, Please check the bulletin for time and place. Technology Students Association and Robotics Update What a difference a few short months make! We just returned from the North Carolina State Technology Students Association s (NCTSA) Annual Conference and Competition. We did not return empty handed. There are ten new trophies sitting in a trophy case at HJ MacDonald. We earned 1st or 2nd place in all of the robotics events and finished as the number 1 team in NCTSA. We earned a 1st and 3rd in the Tech Bowl Written Test, 2nd in Tech Bowl, 2nd in Digital Photography, 2nd in Catapult Design, 2nd in Flight, and 3rd in Structural Engineering. Without your support we would not have been able to attend this event. Your generous donation to our team allowed us to show that we can compete on the same level as the other middle schools in North Carolina. We have an opportunity to move on to the National Stage. The cost to attend this event may be too much for our resources to allow. If you know of anyone interested in helping us have them call to make a donation. Our Adviser and Coach is doing everything he can to help us be the best. If anyone would like to assist us in any way please contact our adviser, Mr. Haynes. The pride they express in being recognized for their accomplishments, the opportunity to dress up and be served at a banquet is special. The Arc presented 27 plaques to our special guests, professionals, mentors, and volunteers. Easter Seals UCP, Special Olympics Craven & Jones county, and Special Needs Baseball received financial support. Our thanks go out to Jeannie Smith and the Board of the Arc for continuing the works they perform. Brothers we may be proud that through your efforts the Council was able to authorize Grand Knight James Whetzel to present The Arc with $1870 to support their works. Special Olympics March 19 saw our swimmers take to the waters of Pullen Park Aquatics Center in pursuit of Gold. It was a time of fun. For yours truly it made me proud that what we Knights do made it possible. I pray to Andy Yandura, who passed the torch to me, that he will watch over the program here at the Council and inspire you to keep the torch burning strong and vibrant. April 9 saw our community come together under the leadership of the YMCA and Special Olympics Craven County and return a regional invitational swim meet to New Bern. April Showers Swim Invitational gave the Craven County Electric Eels an opportunity to host their fellow Special Olympians. This is what the program is all about. Your help in volunteering made the day very special. May 5 is our opportunity to come and cheer for the athletes as they compete in the Special Olympics Craven County Spring Games. Presentation of Colors by the 4 th Degree, Torch run by Military and Law Enforcement, Parade of Athletes and the field of competition fill the day and make us proud to be involved. The games bring the Special Olympics program to an end for the 2015/16 year. As Paul and I depart to Northern Michigan to compete in cross-country skiing, bowling, swimming and bocce we thank you for your help and ask that you help Steven Aster, Craven County Park and Recreation in keeping the torch burning bright. Mid-August brings the steering committee planning session. Contact Steve ( ) for date time and place. Plan for the Special Olympics Spaghetti Dinner. Contact Karen Rubley (Pizza Hut, , boox2@yahoo.com), I told her you would be calling. You know that our goal remains achieving 500 meals served. I suggest a competition between the hall team and the take out team be established to see who can sell the most dinners. I know that Pizza Hut and Karen s team will deliver another great meal. Steven Aster is ready to print tickets, promote the event and help in any way. Because Special Olympics is a County program it would be nice to have the help of the Havelock Council. Paul and I will be monitoring the on line Knightlighter for all the good things happening here in New Bern. Vivat Jesus, John & Paul Scharf (j9njohn@outlook.com)
5 PAGE 5 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2016, IS SUE 2 Faithful Navigators Report Sir Knights as we move ahead in this fraternal year, with only 3 months remaining, we have celebrated the greatest feast in the Christian calendar, Easter. Easter represents the fulfillment of our faith as Christians. Saint Paul said, Christ, through His death, saved mankind from bondage to sin, and He destroyed the hold that death has on all of us; but it is His Resurrection that gives us the promise of new life, both in this world and the next. Through spiritual struggle and self denial, we have prepared ourselves to die spiritually with Christ on Good Friday, the day of His Crucifixion, so that we can rise again with Him in new life on Easter. A big thank you, to everyone who attended our yard sale workers dinner. We would not be so successful without you It s time to start thinking about the slate of officers for next year. Please contact Budd Rancatore if you are interested in an officer s position. Elections will take place at the May business meeting. Remember to keep our sick and deceased Brothers and their families in your prayers. Patrick Rocco, Faithful Navigator Sir Knight of the Month Assembly 1820 would like to acknowledge Fred Nelson as Sir Knight of the Month for April Fred joined the Assembly in November of In that time he has served our organization and parish with his time and talent. Fred can be found in the kitchen helping out on Bingo night and during our yard sales, seeing that workers are well fed. During the yard sales he helps Ralph with pickups and deliveries. When you see Fred please thank him for all he does. God Bless, David Rose, Faithful Captain Purpose of God Donation Knights of Columbus Kenneth I. Parker Assembly 1820 in New Bern, N. C. recently made a donation to Purpose of God Annex in Little Washington, N. C. This donation will assist them with their many outstanding deeds in Pitt, Martin and Beaufort Counties. They will aid others in other counties in need of help and come to the Purpose of God Annex Outreach Center. They are a non-denominational organization who help those in need starting with age 10 and up. Pictured left to right Sir Knight Budd Rancatore. Bishop Samuel Jone Founder and CEO, Mother Egina Jones
6 PAGE 6 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2016, IS SUE 2 The Woman on the Bicycle We have all seen her. The solitary figure of a woman riding a bicycle, wrapped in a shabby parka that does little to keep out the biting cold and pelting rain. She might be clutching all that she owns in a plastic sack or two as she pedals precariously along the side of the road to who knows where. Chances are there is a line of traffic backing up behind her containing more than a few impatient and fuming drivers, deeply offended at being inconvenienced by the slow and unsteady pace of the cyclist. How did the woman find herself here in this particular situation? Perhaps all the poor choices she has made finally caught up with her, or she is lost in the disease of mental illness, alcoholism, drug addiction. Or, for some other reason a broken spirit has drawn her to a nomadic existence. Where is she going? Could be she is prayerfully on her way to her first job after getting out of jail, or to an AA or NA Recovery support group meeting, or maybe to nowhere in particular. Who is she? A once successful CEO, a physician, a former familiar personality around town, a once active parishioner, or someone s favorite aunt? Maybe the woman was a loving wife, or a wonderful mother or a playful sister to a sibling. She could be my daughter, or yours. Today s throw-away culture has been described as accepting anything and forgiving nothing. A third of the population measures success in being able to pay this month s rent, or relishing another day staying clean and sober. Society glorifies prosperity and power in terms of commercial worth, political gain, and Super Bowl rings. There is little tolerance for human brokenness, failure, or long term commitments, and outright disdain for the belief that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing the Will of Our Heavenly Father, Giver of life. During this Jubilee Year of Divine Mercy His Holiness Pope Francis exhorts the Church that today more than ever, we need to ignite a universal spirit of Divine Mercy by praying continually for the conversion of the hearts and minds of the unforgiving; and also for us to be a source of His light by doing what we can as the Hands and feet of Christ to the outcast and marginalized around us. Our Pontiff reminds us that God never gives up on any of us because we are all children of God. In his column titled The Power of Mercy (Columbia Magazine, April 2016 issue) Editor Alton Pelowski poignantly observes, In order to fully appreciate the power of Divine Mercy, we must acknowledge our own sinfulness, open ourselves to receive God s Mercy, and show this Mercy to others. And this cooperation is a gift of His grace. God proves His love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us, and We love because He first loved us. (Rom. 5:8, 1 John 4:19). Next time we encounter the woman on the bicycle, let God be her judge. Let you and I be joyfully prepared to do what we can to manifest to her the same unconditional Love and Mercy God has shown us.
