Parker Assembly 1820-were pleased to present a check to Mrs. Megan Johnson, Fine Arts Enhancement (FAE) Developer, at Saint Paul Catholic School. Classes are offered to students at a small fee of $ 30 for each class that lasts for a one 18 week semester. They are offered Dance, Guitar, Trumpet, Violin, Art and Creative Design and Theater Arts, Advanced Choir and Ukulele for the fall. Exposure to the arts has proven to be invaluable to children. Studies have shown that music, art, dance and drama can teach children many skills that they cannot learn through pencil and paper activities. This contribution, with other personal donations, will enhance the scholarship fund and assist students that cannot pay the fee. While many schools have made cuts to their fine arts programs, Saint Paul is proud to announce this expansion. Nancy Stewart, PR SK David Rose, Faithful Captain helps train his son, Owen Rose, to give of his time and talent to the New Bern community, as the Knights do. Owen was one of the Saint Paul Catholic School students that participated in the Kitchens of New Bern Tour. The proceeds of this tour went to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. They in turn distribute food to Religious Community Services, the Salvation Army, etc. Nancy Stewart PR Saint Paul Catholic School In His Father s Steps Front row left to right: Owen Rose and Madison Tivan-back row SK David Rose and Ed, grandfather of Madison

If you just walk around both of the buildings at the Knights and at our Church, you will easily see why this honor was bestowed on Jim. Since he started in 2002, Jim has generously given of his time and talent by building furniture, cabinets, remodeling rooms, etc. When Saint Paul Church was without a person for the buildings and grounds, Jim volunteered many months maintaining the Church property. He has served as an active member of the Columbus Club. This last year Jim has focused his talents helping to update our Blue yard sale building. Thank you Jim for all you do. God Bless, Philip Nassef, DGK Family of the Month The Family of the Month for October 2015 is Louise and George Halyak. George just recently took on the task of running the 4 th degree yard sale. Until recently he was the Council s publicity chairperson. All of the pictures and articles you read in the paper, about the Council, was George s doing. Louise along with George is always available to help set up at all of our Knights functions whenever called upon. Louise also does a lot of work for our Parish Saint Paul. 3 PAGE 3 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2015, IS SUE 3 A Word from the Family Director Well we are off to a very busy year. As I am writing this article about 50 of our faithful members, their wives and friends of the Knights are preparing for our Yard sale which will be held on October 2 nd and 3 rd There is a lot of good furniture and appliances along with hundreds of various types of equipment up for sale. On November the 12 th we will be holding our Honor our Widows dinner which will be held at our Knights hall starting at 5:30 pm. Vince Fragnito will be preparing a delicious Pork Tenderloin dinner with all the trimmings. Priscilla Dodson and her set up crew will be decorating the hall. The theme is a secret but when you see it you will be very happy. Tickets will go on sale soon. Please come out for a wonderful evening honoring our Widows. I promise you a great evening. The Christmas party will be held this year on Sunday December 13 th starting at 2:30 PM. All are welcomed and bring the Children. Santa will be there and will have some goodies for the children. We hope to have a singing group to lead us in singing Christmas carols and there will be stories told to the children. There will be plenty of good food for all to enjoy. We hope to see you all on the 13 th of December Nick Dalessandro, Family Director Jesus Calling A few months ago Brother Larry Spallanzanni gave me a copy of a small book of devotions for every day of the year. Earlier Larry s sister had given him a copy. Perhaps you have discovered this remarkable book yourself. It is titled Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. This is not your ordinary book of scripture reflections. The author makes us keenly aware that a rich relationship with Jesus is so much more than presenting Him with a list of requests. It includes listening through reading the Bible and receiving what He is putting in your heart. This book is written as if Jesus is speaking directly to you words of comfort, encouragement and His unending Love. Jesus Calling has become the center piece of my own daily prayers. I have found Jesus words to me on any given day, so often meld into reality as the events of the day unfold. I want to publicly, thank you again Larry for giving me a copy of this book. A special thanks, dear friend for inspiring all of us at Council 3303 with your unyielding faith and positive attitude as you courageously battle your horrific illness. Know that you continue to be a beacon of Light for those of us lost in darkness, and of Hope for those of us in despair. Knights of Columbus PGK Mikie Casem Rental Pine Tree Dr. New Bern, NC S. 5 PAGE 5 K NIGHT LIGHTE R V OLUME 2015, IS SUE 3 Faithful Navigators Report For my October report a little history of the Fourth Degree. On February 22, 1900, the first Fourth Degree exemplification or degree ceremony was held in New York City. The Fourth Degree imparts a lesson on the virtue of patriotism. The primary purpose of this degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism in members and the community at large and encourage active Catholic citizenship. Today there are some 300,000 Fourth Degree Knights out of the total 1.8 million Knights of Columbus members. Local units, called assemblies, draw their members from Knights of Columbus Councils. The qualifications for membership in the Fourth Degree are that you be a Third Degree Knight in good standing with your Council and the Order. The waiting period for becoming a Fourth Degree Knight has been eliminated. Once you have been bestowed the honor of Knighthood, you will continue your journey in learning the lesson of patriotism. As a Fourth Degree Knight you have the opportunity to become part of your Assembly s Color Corps. As a Color Corps member, you will be recognized widely by the distinctive attire of tuxedo, feathered hat (chapeau), cape and sword. Color Corps members regularly take part in civic events such as parades and wreath-laying ceremonies, and in ecclesial functions at Catholic Churches. The various colored capes and chapeau feathers denote different officer positions within the Fourth Degree. If you are a 3rd Degree member and have submitted your Form 4 and would like to become a Fourth Degree member there will be one on November 21, 2015 in Raleigh NC. If you would like to attend please notify one of our officers and we will make the arrangements. This is a one day event and the cost is $70.00 per candidate and $20.00 for observers. You will need a tuxedo. If you cannot attend the one in Raleigh, we will be hosting a Fourth Degree Exemplification in New Bern on February 27, 2016 at the Knights Patrick Rocco, Faithful Navigator Sir Knight of the Month Assembly 1820 Sir Knight of the Month for September is Charles Knight. Sir Knight Charles has been a member of 1820 since Charles dedicates his time and energy to the Special Olympics and ARC. He is also involved with the church as an usher at the 11:00 Mass. When you see Charles please thank him for all he does. God Bless David Rose, Faithful Captain A Note from the Editor It may seem like a simple task to put together the Knightlighter and the E-Knightlighter. Well, it is not. In fact it takes a team. I would like to give credit where credit is due. When I returned to editor of the Knightlighter, I realized that I could not do this by myself. Each article needs to be proofread, corrected, and proofread again. I have been very fortunate that one of our Sir Knights and his wife stepped up and helped with that task. Before they volunteered to help, it took me days to edit the newsletter. With their help, the time has been cut down in half. So when you read your newsletter remember to thank these two unsung volunteers for their efforts to make this the best newsletter in the nation. Sandy and Nancy, you have my undying gratitude for your help in this endeavor. I could not have done this without you. My wife and I are retiring and returning to Washington State in If there is a member of our Council that would like to become the next editor, I invite him to contact me so that we can start the transition. Anyone can learn this in a year. I learned in one day. SK Michael Haynes, Editor
