1 The Network News April 2016 PENINSULA BAPTIST ASSOCIATION VISION NIGHT First Baptist Church of Newport News Sunday, April 17 th, PM WORSHIP AND VISION CASTING Featuring worship led by the National Day of Prayer Mass Choir, conducted by Rev. Chad Lambert, and messages from our PBA Ministerial Staff. 7:30 PM MISSION FAIR Featuring displays from our churches and local ministries, along with light refreshments. This is a great opportunity for networking and partnering between churches. This annual gathering is open to everyone! This is our opportunity to share where we feel God is taking our network of churches in the future. It is also an opportunity to learn from other churches about missions and ministry opportunities. During the worship time we will also be voting to receive two churches into Watch Care in the PBA. Search Point Bible Fellowship with Pastor Larry Brayboy is a brand new church plant, and Antioch Baptist Church with Pastor William Greene is a church with a rich history in Newport News. We will conduct a brief business session for this vote. Churches are encouraged to have their messengers in attendance. Come celebrate, worship, and share in this great gathering! 2 BRING ONE, TAKE ONE At Vision Night we usually give out something to symbolize our theme of the year. This year we plan to do that, but we are also asking if you will bring one of the items listed below. These items were requested by Avalon, Transitions, HELP, and Menchville House, and will be dispersed to them. Although you do not have to bring something in order to attend Vision Night, we ask that you will prayerfully consider it. Also, if you bring something you will be given a ticket to possibly win a prize. The winner will be announced during the Mission Fair portion of the evening. So, this year for our Vision Night, bring one, take one, and possibly win the prize! Shelter needs New and Unopened items only Gift cards Sam s Club, Lowes, Wal-Mart, Farm Fresh, Food Lion, Target, Home Depot, Martin s Grocery, Office Max Household goods Paper Towels, Toilet Paper, Ziplock bags (gallon and quart size), sandwich bags, Napkins Kitchen towels, dish cloths, pot holders Plastic forks, spoons, knives, paper plates, bowls, cups, aluminum foil Garbage bags (tall kitchen and 30 gallon) Cleaning supplies (bathroom cleaner, furniture polish, dish soap, etc) Laundry detergent (unscented), dryer sheets, bleach Pots, pans, plate sets Plastic bed covers, (full and twin), sheets, (fitted and flat) blankets, pillow cases, (full and twin) Bath towels, wash cloths Food items Non-perishable Institutional-Size (tuna, salmon, cereal, etc.), household size canned goods Juice boxes, single serve snacks items Personal Items Unopened over the counter medications (children and adult) Shampoo, conditioner, soap, feminine hygiene products (full size) Ethnic hair products Disposable diapers all sizes, unscented baby wipes These organizations cannot take remnants from garage sales, rummage sales or flea markets.

3 2016 ASSOCIATIONAL MISSIONS OFFERING GOALS We Are The Church Week Of Prayer May 15-22, 2016 Overall 2016 Goal: $18,000 Local Baptist Associations across the country recognize a Week of Prayer for Associational Missions each year in May. As with State, North American, and International Missions, an offering is received in conjunction with the Week of Prayer. We always plan for the money received through this offering to be reinvested back through ministry to and with our churches. We do not use this money to pay salaries and bills. The offering is open to both individuals and congregations, and may be collected any time during the year. You will have an opportunity to give individually at our Vision Night on April 17 th. Strengthening Existing Churches $6,000 Strong healthy churches are needed to advance God s Kingdom in our area. These are churches that are growing by engaging their communities with the gospel. These funds help our churches provide Sports Camps and other ministries inside and outside of the walls of the church. Catalyzing New Work $1,000 We are committed to supporting new church plants, as well as multi-sites and new services within existing churches. These funds provide small start-up grants for church plants and scholarships for training leaders for these new works. Developing Leaders $6,000 Our staff is committed to walking alongside of our churches in the training, equipping, and developing of leaders. Among the ways these funds are used are: scholarships for training events, internships for young leaders, and the purchase of resources to help people develop their leadership potential. Missions $4,000 Missions are the glue that hold our network together. We may not always agree on everything, but we all agree on the importance of fulfilling the Great Commission. These funds help with missional projects through the Baptist Collegiate Ministries at Christopher Newport University, and William and Mary University; and to help people from our churches go on mission trips around the world. Eastover $1,000 We want to encourage our churches to use Eastover. One of our dreams is for church sponsored retreat opportunities for inner city children. This money will be available to churches wishing to engage in that kind of ministry at our Retreat Facility. Bulletin inserts and envelopes are available. 4 SPORTS CAMP SCHEDULE 2016 If you missed the Sports Camp Interest meeting, but you re interested in having a sports camp through your church this summer, then please contact Melanie (melanie@peninsulabaptist.org) by April 20 th. LAST CALL FOR PBA SUMMER LEADERSHIP TEAM APPLICATIONS! Applications for the 2016 PBA Summer Leadership Team are due on April 15 th. So if you, or someone you know are between the ages and are interested in having an eight week (June 20 th -August 12 th ) paid position, which focuses on discipleship, leadership, and serving our churches then please contact Melanie. STUDENT MINISTRY NETWORK Our next Student Ministry Network meeting will be on April 18th at noon at the PBA Resource Center (863 Cloverleaf Lane Newport News, VA 23601). This will be Bring Your Own Lunch style at noon and then the content of the meeting will start at 12:30. So, feel free to join us with your favorite lunch at noon and/or plan to meet with us afterwards at 12:30. We hope to see you all there! PASTOR S DIALOGUE ON RACE, POVERTY, AND VIOLENCE Wednesday, April 13th, 11:30 AM Pearlie s Restaurant, 2108 Jefferson Avenue This monthly gathering is an opportunity for pastors and community leaders to have an honest conversation about issues that often divide our communities. We began this as an intentional opportunity to get white and black pastors in dialogue with each other. We now meet the second Wednesday of each month in various locations. Please RSVP to melanie@peninsulabaptist.org so we know how many will be there for lunch. BI-VOCATIONAL PASTORS Thursday, April 14 th, 6:30 PM PBA Resource Center Bi-Vocational Pastors are invited to come share a free meal and conversation. At this meeting Pastor Dale Miles of Temple of Faith in Hampton will be sharing about Domestic Violence, and about an upcoming event they will be hosting on this subject. PASTOR S FELLOWSHIP Thursday, April 21 st, 11 AM PBA Resource Center All pastors are invited to our monthly gathering for prayer, informative programs, and lunch together. We meet the third Thursday each month. This meeting is open to pastors (whether or not you are currently serving a church), retired pastors, and anyone else who is involved in vocational ministry of any kind. This is an excellent place to network, share, and learn together. Please RSVP to pba@peninsulabaptist.org so we know how many to cook for. Lunch is free! EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Monday, April 25 th, 7 PM PBA Resource Center Our next Executive Committee is coming up in a few weeks. We encourage all churches to send two representatives (one minister and one lay person) to this meeting. The purpose of the Executive Committee is to conduct business on behalf of the whole association between annual meetings. In these gatherings we hear report from the staff and teams, and vote on any appropriate business which may come up.

5 Michael J. P.B.A Workcamp 25/24 Gift from God You are invited to Save the Date from July th, 2016 for the last 2016 P.B.A. Workcamp 25/24 Gift from God. Thank you for your continuous support for people in need of home repairs in and around our community. Workcamp was birthed from a summer youth mission project (that was small in our eyes but great in God s) that built a home for an elderly women in Poquoson in With this year s final camp we will have completed 25 Workcamps in 24 years that included building a home in Poquoson as well as crossing state lines to Gulfport, Mississippi to help people in need of home repairs after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. A very sincere Thank you to Emmaus Baptist Church, Harold Aadahl, Mike Haywood, and the Peninsula Baptist Association for 24 years of service to our very own Gift from God Workcamp. 6 HAMPTON BAPTIST CHURCH We are excited to invite each of your church's congregations to a community event at Hampton Baptist Church in Downtown Hampton on April 16th AT 7:00 PM, to celebrate the completion of our new building! Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor, writer, and speaker from Danville, Indiana. An eclectic writer, Gulley has published 20 books, including the acclaimed Harmony series chronicling life in the eccentric Quaker community of Harmony, Indiana and the best-selling Porch Talk series of inspirational and humorous essays.
