3 Our Grand Knight s Report My Brother Knights, Brothers I hope you all had a very Merry and Blessed Christmas filled with joy, hope and love. Our December 10th Christmas party was wonderful, the food was great as well as the camaraderie and I am sure our Council put smiles on the faces of lots of children with all the many gifts collected from our generous Brother Knights, another great example of the Knights of Columbus working to help our community. A big thank you to brother Ken Hein for chairing this event and let s not forget a big thank you to Santa and Frosty for their visit. (Photos of the party are on pg. 6) As you may know Saint Michael s Parish has many small Christian communities. These groups meet weekly or bi weekly for there members to enter more fully into the Sunday Mass. The small Christian Community committee (SCCC) plans to initiate a Parish wide campaign to encourage and support new group formation as well as to strengthen existing groups. A gathering for all ministry representatives will be held on January 22, 2018 in PAC hall at 6:00 pm and all are welcome to attend. Remember Brothers our participation as well as the participation of our many parishioners in these ministries will allow us to more fully understand the Mass and to internalize Gods word more deeply. Before our January business meeting on January 4th, 2018, we will have a first Degree at 6 pm. This is one hour before our regularly scheduled meeting. I plan on having five candidates taking the First Degree, that will make over ten new members since October 5,2017. I would like to give a big thank you to our Membership Director Brother Rick Fox. As many of you Brothers know as we enter this new calendar year we need several Brothers to step up and fill some open chairs. The following are currently open for this fraternal year as well as for our next fraternal year; Youth Director, Magnet Chairman and Special Olympic chairman. I would like to have some brothers to step up and help prepare food for our meetings until Jack and Rosalie return. (Let s keep our Brother Jack in our prayers for a speedy return). Mark your calendars for a great night of fun and food and dance, Our Polish Night Dance will be held on Saturday January 27,2018 at the Duffy Center. All your favorites will be served, Kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, pierogi, sauerkraut, dessert, beer, wine soft drinks and coffee. All for $ per person, reservations must be received no later than January 22nd. More info is on the flyer on pg. 5. Our Coats for Kids drive was great and a special thanks to Scott Jordan for a job well done, the total collected at this point is $ 12, May God bless you and may God bless this Country. 8 7. Columbus Hope Report; Help4Kids/Backpack Buddies; Month of the Holy Name Knights of Columbus Council 8980 Columbus HOPE Foundation November 2017 Update We have put together a schedule for the 2018 drive. The number of stores has been reduced to 11 and we feel that will allow us to meet our goal and give us a reasonable chance to exceed it. Early in 2018 the Captains from last year will be contacted to arrange their assigned store. The chefs for the 2017 Doo Wop have graciously agreed to do it again this year and we are already working on a date in October. We are also planning a book sale, hopefully sometime in August so if you or anyone you know is a reader please see about donating their used books to us. Just a reminder that we will be presenting the CHF checks to the recipients on February 22nd after rosary. Please consider attending. Many of you worked very hard collecting this money and you should see where it goes. May God Continue to Bless St. Michael s Council 8980 and our Special Children K of C Council 8980 Help 4 Kids / Backpack Buddies Wal-Mart Food Drive It was nice to have a little rest in December but it s time to go back to work. The schedule for the January 20th food drive is filling up. The 9:30-12:00 shift is already full. The sign up sheet will be at the January meeting or you can call me at # to get on board. Help4Kids is increasing the food provided to the kids starting in January so our work is even more important. Next Food Drive 01/20/18 Anyone interested in participating in this opportunity to serve the less fortunate children of Horry County should call Alan # Brother Knights, your prayers, dedication and hard work are truly blessings and appreciated. The Hungry Children of Help 4 Kids and Backpack Buddies thank you all!!! January - Month of the Holy Name The month of January is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. "In the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth and under the earth" (Phil 2:10). Christ's name is chosen in heaven, and the Angel Gabriel announces it when he informs the Blessed Virgin of the incarnation: "Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb and shalt bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus". It is a name that has marvelous implications, for it means "savior." The very name bespeaks the magnitude of His mission, His infinite love, a love that will cause Him to offer Himself up for us. The name of Jesus is the sweetest of all names, and He who bears it is most worthy of all love. He who calls Jesus his friend can be assured that this friend is the most devoted and unselfish of all friends. Jesus is our all. In His name we may pray to the Father with assurance of being heard. In His name the Church administers all her sacraments. In His name she offers all her prayers and blesses homes, the fields, and the sick. In the name of Jesus she casts out evil spirits, and at the hour of our death bids us, "Go forth, Christian soul." She assures us that whoever shall call upon this name will be saved. When our soul has departed this life to seek its eternal home, the Church asks in the name of Jesus, "Eternal rest give unto him, O Lord."

11 10. The Psychology of why New Year s Resolutions DO NOT WORK. From an article in How many New Year's resolutions have you made in your life? How many have you successfully accomplished? The estimate is that less than 10% of New Year's resolutions are actually achieved. The science of habits. A lot of New Year's resolutions have to do with making new habits or changing existing ones. If your resolutions are around things like eating healthier, exercising more, drinking less, quitting smoking, texting less, spending more time "unplugged" or any number of other "automatic" behaviors then we are talking about changing existing habits or making new habits. Habits are automatic, "conditioned" responses. You get up in the morning and stop at Starbucks for a pastry and a latte. You go home at the end of work and plop down in front of the TV. Here's what you need to know about the science of changing existing habits or making new ones: Contrary to popular opinion, it's not hard to change habits IF you do so based on science. To change a new habit you essentially have to create a new one, so whether you are changing an existing habit or creating a new one, the "scientific" method for doing so is the same. You have already created literally HUNDREDS of habits that you have now, and you don't even remember how they got started, so creating habits can't be that hard or you wouldn't have so many of them! To create a new habit you have to follow these three steps: 1. You MUST pick a small action. "Get more exercise" is not small. "Eat healthier" is not small. This is a big reason why New Year's resolutions don't work. If it's a habit and you want a new one it MUST be something really small. For example, instead of "Get more exercise" choose "Walk 1/3 more than I usually do" or "Take the stairs each morning to get to my office, not the elevator", or "Have a smoothie every morning with kale in it". These are relatively small actions. 2. You MUST attach the new action to a previous habit. Figure out a habit you already have that is well established, for example, if you already go for a brisk walk 3 times a week, then adding on 10 more minutes to the existing walk connects the new habit to an existing one. The existing habit "Go for walk" now becomes the "cue" for the new habit: "Walk 10 more minutes." Your new "stimulus-response" is Go For Walk (Stimulus) followed by "Add 10 minutes." Your existing habit of "walk through door at office" can now become the "cue" or stimulus for the new habit of "walk up a flight of stairs." Your existing habit of "Walk into the kitchen in the morning" can now be the stimulus for the new habit of "Make a kale smoothie." 3. You MUST make the new action EASY to do for at least the first week. Because you are trying to establish a conditioned response, you need to practice the new habit from the existing stimulus from 3 to 7 times before it will "stick" on its own. To help you through this 3 to 7 times phase make it as EASY as possible. Write a note and stick it in your walking shoe that says "Total time today for walk is 30 minutes". Write a note and put it where you put your keys that says: "Today use the stairs." Put the kale in the blender and have all your smoothie ingredients ready to go in one spot in the refrigerator. If you take these three steps and you practice them 3 to 7 days in a row your new habit will be established.
