2 OUR GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT My Brother Knights, A new year is upon us and 2013 has flown by with the speed of light. We welcome 2014 and pray that it will be as successful for the Knights as Our Council is blessed to have Father Ed as our Chaplain and also as a Fourth Degree Knight. Father Ray is back from Italy and is awaiting assignment. We wish him well in his new endeavor whatever it may be. With the start of the new year we have so many programs in effect that will need the support of all the Knights of Council 8980, to name a few; Blood Drive, Polish night, Irish night, State convention, Back pack for Kids, School basketball games, Wounded Warriors, Golf outing, so look at your calendar and call one of the officers and volunteer a most precious gift "your time". Also, if you have an idea for a new program or even a new look at an old program, step forward and give us your ideas. We want our council to grow and remain the best council in the Knights of Columbus. For that to happen we need the support of all the Knights not just a few, we want a council that is moving forward with old tried and true ideas as well as new ideas. One idea that proved so successful was to put out our seminarian jar at all of our functions. This has proved so successful that we now can support four (4) seminarians, instead of the two (2) that we supported for many years. Again STOP listen to your heart and volunteer your precious gift of time to your council, you will, I promise, receive in return a true feeling that only in giving can you receive. Officers meeting will be cancelled due to closeness of New Years Day. Officers meeting are now at 4 P.M. January business meeting will be on the 9th in the Duffy Center, 7 P.M.. We are trying to have a 1st degree on 12/28/13 Saturday at 10 A.M. with either two or three new candidates, please come and show our new candidates the spirit of the Knights of Columbus. By having this on Saturday we are giving the new candidates the chance of moving onto 2nd and 3rd degree on 1/4/14. You will receive more information by phone and as to times we are leaving St. Michaels to attend the 2nd and 3rd degree. Please make plans to attend. Our Knights before Christmas with the School was a huge success, even though the Knights turnout was light. A special THANK You to Aelred Pereira for reading a story to all the children at the party. The party was enjoyed by all the Knights and their wives that attended, as well as all the children that attended. Father Ed and Father John were given their Knights of Columbus jackets at the party, and both loved them. Father Ed is now thinking about a motorcycle to go along with his new jacket. I would like to THANK the following Knights for all that they do, Gil Cushing, Al Sterling for their lead in Coats for Kids. John Kokoska for his lead in the gifts for Tara Hall. John Fry for his continued lead with Back Pack for Buddies. Mike Urso, Don Maher for their lead in the recruitment of new Knights. In closing I wish all our brother Knights a most Blessed Happy New Year. God Bless Council 8980 Vivat Jesus! Ed is not only St. Michael s Technology Guru, but has a big heart to go with it. He is always willing to step in and assist those of us who are technologically-challenged. He is a great asset to St. Michael and Council 8980.

Congratulations to: Knight of the Month - December Brother David Kriebel. Dave has been our recording secretary and does an excellent job in keeping our minutes in order and up to date. He also volunteers his time on other programs in the council. He has been the scorekeeper in both the volley ball games as well as the basketball games for St Michaels School, at just about all our functions you will see Dave tending bar the whole night. THANK YOU Dave Knight Family of the Month December Brother Al & Janice Sterling. A true Catholic family that volunteers their time for so many Church and Knights functions. Al not only is the inside guard at our meetings he will also sell you so many things after the meeting. 5 Let s show our Unity and Fraternity - By Brother Ken Pankowski If the average person who doesn t know who the Knights of Columbus are (I really didn t just eight months ago!) they might say, They re a Fraternal group. They wouldn t be totally right. People might think we re just a charitable group and they d still not have it all right. Some might just recognize us as the men who wear the Naval Regalia for church events, and they d not be totally right. The Knights are a group of Practical Catholic men whose tenets are Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Our council has decided, with the full backing of our Grand Knight, Larry Berry, and our pastor, Fr. Ed Fitzgerald, to show our Unity and Fraternity by means of attending Mass and Communion as a body. In this way we can show the people of St. Michael s Parish that, above all, we are Practicing Catholics. We will begin with 9:00 am Mass on January 12, Many men, including myself, attend other masses. At this time, we are asking ALL Knights to come to the 9:00 mass even if you also attend another mass, even if you serve in one capacity or another, e.g. usher, lector, cantor, etc. Remember, you can receive communion up to twice in one day. We NEED a show of UNITY and FRATERNITY to the parish. We will also use this event to give a good start our 2014 Membership Drive. Please, wear your Sunday Best, and assemble in the narthex at 8:45. We ll have a section reserved for us and will precede the pastor in and out and carry our banner. We hope to make this an ongoing event, rotating among different masses so all may see who we are, and hopefully join us. See you there! Tara Hall Due to the generosity of the brothers of Council 8980, an overflowing truck full of gifts was delivered to the school on Wednesday, 18 December. In addition to several Christmas presents for each boy, a brother Knight donated a complete Wii video game set up for the Tara Hall game room to be enjoyed by all the boys. May God bless you all.
