2 Our Grand Knight s Report My Brother Knights, I would like to thank Fr. Ed for having the prayer service for the Silver Rose and thank our Assembly s Honor Guard for helping to make this a dignified service in honor of Our Lady of Guadeloupe. Also a thank you to all the Brother Knights and their wives that came to the service. Our DD Denny Laczo, FS Jim Adee, DGK Ron Bellonio, Trustee Gil Cushing, and I were in Charleston for the annual State convention. All the State officers were re-elected for their second term. The convention delegates voted for a change in the by-laws to allow for an increase in the amount that the State council can raise the assessments with. They needed to raise it with $1.00 to be able to pay the bills. This is the amount that I had informed the council about after the last GK meeting. I have great news for our 1st degree brothers. On Saturday August 12th our council has been given the honor of hosting the Formation and the Knighthood degrees in the Duffy Center. This early notice should give all of you very little chance for having any excuses for not getting to full Knighthood. I would like to see all of our 42, 1st degree brothers step up and receive the Knighthood degree and this without having to travel to another parish. I can promise you it doesn t get any easier than this. All you have to do is to let Jim Adee, our Financial Secretary, or me know so the paperwork can be prepared and then just show up for the degrees. In this issue is information about our upcoming Golf Tournament on June 24. See the flyer on page 9. We again have scholarships of $ each for one male and one female whose qualifications will be decided by our Scholarship Committee. Candidates must be children of families who are registered with the parish. Those scholarships will be given out at the installation of officers event on July 6, More info on Page 6. Flag day is coming up in just a few weeks, and there s a nice story about its origins on page 10. Election of officers will be at the June 1 meeting. The slate of officers can be found on page 5. Please study it carefully and be prepared to vote at the meeting. And, if you are heading on vacation this summer, Ken Pankowski has found some very good tips on how to prepare your home when you go away. That can be found on page 10. This is my last Grand Knight s message and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my officers and the members for your help and support, knowing that it would have been impossible without you. I leave the office a much wiser man than when I entered it. Finally as most of us realize we would not be able to do what we do without the support of our wives. I owe a BIG THANK YOU to my wife Prudence for her support and proof reading of my messages. Please remember that there are no Rosary nights in June, July and August. May God Bless you and our Country. 6 6. Scholarship Program; Remembering Tony Saraceni; Catholic Q & A We will again this year be accepting applications from students of parents who are registered with St. Michael s Church. Applications will be available in a few weeks in the Narthex of the Church, and the postmark deadline will be Saturday, June 10, The applications may also be turned into the Parish office no later than Monday, June 12, The Committee will review all applications and one boy and one girl will be awarded a $1, Scholarship each at the July 6, 2017 Installation of officers. Several months ago we did a feature on the Compass newsletter, from its design and publication, printing and production & mailing. Part of that team was our Brother Knight Anthony Tony Saraceni and his wife Joan. Tony passed away on April 28 and the Funeral Mass was on May 2. Many Knights attended. We on the production team, as well as a great number of our Knights will miss Tony and his gentle way, but will also miss his willingness to help when needed. Tony Saraceni Q. Orthodox say the Eucharist should be consumed, not adored. When did eucharistic adoration begin? A. From the earliest days of its existence, the Church has been centered on the celebration of the Eucharist. Celebration of the Lord's Passion has remained the source of power and grace until the present day. But from the thirteenth century on, in the Western Church great devotion to the eucharistic presence developed even outside of the Mass. In his book In the Presence of the Lord, Fr. Benedict Groeschel writes: "Since the time of St. Francis and St. Thomas Aquinas in the thirteenth century there has not been a single Catholic saint for whom this devotion has not been an integral part of the spiritual life." Actually, such devotion is rooted in the Church Fathers and may have arisen in practice by the end of the sixth century. Jesus told Thomas who had doubted, "Put your finger here; look, here are my hands" (John 20:27). Thomas looked and believed. Such recognition caused him to fall prostrate and say: "My Lord and my God!" This is what eucharistic devotion causes people to do as well. If one believes that the Eucharist is truly the body and blood of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is only natural to revere it even when we are not receiving it Q. The Bible clearly says that Jesus had brothers and sisters, but the Catholic Church teaches that Mary was a perpetual virgin; how can you reconcile those seemingly different positions? A. Mark 6:3 says, Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses, and Judas and Simon, and are not His sisters here with us? We need to realize a few things here about these brothers and sisters. First, there was no word for cousin, or for nephew or niece, or for aunt or uncle in ancient Hebrew or Aramaic the words that the Jews used in all those instances were brother or sister. An example of this can be seen in Gen 14:14, where Lot, who was Abraham s nephew, is called his brother. Another point to consider: In John 19:26-27, right before Jesus dies, it says that Jesus entrusted the care of His mother to the beloved disciple, John. If Mary had had any other sons, it would have been a bit of a slap in the face to them that the Apostle John was entrusted with the care of their mother. Q. Why is Good Friday referred to as Good when it refers to the day Jesus suffered and died? A. Because we immediately see the suffering and death Jesus endured for us on that day, which understandably brings us or should bring us great sorrow. And yet, because Jesus died for our sins on that day (1 Tim. 4:5-6), we see that it is indeed a good day; and, in some ways, good seems to fall a little short, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church indicates: Death is transformed by Christ. Jesus, the Son of God, also himself suffered the death that is part of the human condition. Yet, despite his anguish as he faced death, he accepted it in an act of complete and free submission to his Father's will. The obedience of Jesus has transformed the curse of death into a blessing.

As I look in the rearview mirror, if find a pleasant picture. We accomplished several things already and we have a few more upcoming. By the time you receive this message, we will have had our election of officers for the upcoming year. I applaud the men elected for stepping up to serve you and me as officers for the next year. Talking about new officers, the installation of those men will be on the afternoon of Sunday July 16th at St. James Parish. If you wish to attend, let me know and I will get you registered. Wives are invited. The dinner cost is $12.00 per person. Also in the recent past is the placing of flags at Hillcrest Cemetery. All went well with that detail and thanks to those who showed up to help. Now on the 31 st we will be back at Hillcrest Cemetery to pick up the flags. A little easier, but still time consuming, so if you can be there it will be appreciated as the more helping, the faster it gets done. As I write this article, we are still waiting for word about the Honor Guard s participating in the annual Memorial Day Celebration at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. There is a new organization in charge and the communication is not the same as in the past. If requested, we will be there. The Honor Guard was present at the two First Communion Masses last month. There were 65 children in total receiving their First Communion. They all looked great all decked out in their finest white outfits and they received our Lord of the first time. The same day the Honor Guard was present for the reception of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. The Honor Guard participated at the Funeral Mass of a member of the Council, Harold Marlowe. Harold turned 100 years old. He never transferred into our Assembly, but was a registered member of an Assembly in New York. His daughter was pleased that we would attend. We will present the Flag Folding Ceremony at the 7:00 am Mass on Sunday May 28th. The Flag Folding team is doing a great job and we should all be proud of them as they instruct those watching the meaning of each fold. It is not just getting it done so it is neat, but each fold has a purposeful meaning. The next program is with Fr. Fr. Greg Caiazzo who will be presenting a talk on the role of the Chaplain in our Armed Services. He will focus on the Catholic Chaplains and the many areas they face on a daily basis. Another portion will be dedicated to the Chaplain s Seminary training, which the Knights of Columbus support wholeheartedly. Many of you know Fr. Greg, as he assists celebrating Masses at St Michaels. Fr. Greg is currently the President of the Military Chaplains Association. His program will start at 1:30 pm. He will make two talks with a break for refreshments. At the end we will celebrate Mass and have you on your way no later than 5:00 PM. You are all encouraged to attend and I will need to know if you are going to attend so we have enough refreshments for all. Mark your calendar so that you attend this special presentation by Fr. Greg. I assure you that it will be an afternoon you do want to miss. It was good to see several of our Sir Knights presented will a token of thanks from Pamela Walters, the Principal of St. Michael School for their participation in volunteering at the school in the past year. Congratulations and thank you for your support. Be safe and have a great Memorial Day. 10 10. The History of Flag Day; Tips on Preparing Your Home for Vacation. How to Prepare Your Home for Summer Vacation tips from Home Insurance Professionals To make sure that your home will be in the same shape as when you left, we've prepared some helpful hints for before and while you're away. After all, leaving worries behind is what vacation is all about. Here's a list to get you started. Two weeks ahead: Notify your local police department. In many communities they will periodically patrol your neighborhood, as well as check your windows and doors. Stop daily and weekly newspapers, but NOT mail..have neighbor collect it.. Arrange for lawn service. Arrange for pet care. Check your alarm system and notify the companies that monitor your fire and burglar alarms. Cut shrubs below window level and trim trees away from your house. Check your outdoor sprinkler system. Stop all routine delivery services such as groceries. Purchase light timers/check operation. Have neighbor put out your trash bin for pickup (ask neighbor to put a bag of his in your bin.) And, importantly, leave a key, itinerary, alarm code and phone number with a trustworthy neighbor. You may also want to tell the neighbor how to turn off your sprinkler system if your town institutes a water ban and you run your system off town water. You could face heavy fines, along with some angry neighbors. Just prior to departure: Flush toilets. Empty dishwasher.(leave it OPEN). Set thermostats higher than normal if you run air conditioning. Don't turn off your air conditioning if you live in a high humidity area, as it may lead to mold. Unplug nonessential electrical appliances. Turn off water to washing machine and toilets. Set timers and lights. Set several to switch on and off at different times of the day and night. Check window locks. Throw away refrigerated items that may spoil while you are away. Make sure trash is out of the house. Unhook electric garage door openers and manually lock them. Set alarm. Lock doors including deadbolt locks. Turn on answering machine. Have a Safe Trip!
