According to Brooks, thick organizations often share a physical location, where people meet regularly, face to face, and frequently, for a meal. Thick institutions often have and practice shared rituals. I pray that for all of you, your family is a thick institution. For some, the St. Michael s community is a thick institution, as is the Legion of Mary, the VFW, or even one s job. The purpose of this article is to invite you all to make our Council a thick institution. Brooks continues in his op-ed that there s often a sacred origin story and usually members can quickly articulate a common ideal. Membership is not a means to get something for themselves, but a way to be part of something bigger than themselves, for the greater good. The Knights of Columbus, as an institution, is thick. We have a sacred origin story of helping the widowed and orphaned; common ideals of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity; and programs of action that reach beyond our Council which positively affect the community, Church, and family to name a few. In times like these where Facebook friends and thin connections supplant the true meaning of friendship and relationships, it is common to see some stress numbers over meaningful programs; but I would argue, the more good we do and the more programs we are involved in, the more our numbers will increase. I believe the more we hold true to the founding principles of Father Michael J. McGivney and how we can do more, than be the thicker our Council will become. The Council needs the help of each and every member in our Council to become a thick institution which will further strengthen our Council, Church, community, and families. So, I ask each of you reading this, to reach out to another member of the Council, preferably, someone you haven t seen in a while and invite them to participate in a Council activity, even if it means just attending a meeting. Sometimes, all it takes to thicken up our Council is fellowship before, during, or after a meeting; remembering our commitments during an exemplification ceremony; or being the hands, feet, heart, and soul of God as we carry out a program. If you have read this far, I invite you to continue reading the rest of the newsletter to learn more about your Council and then pray on how you can make us thicker. 2 Page 2 A Minute with the Membership Chairman The council held a membership drive on October 13 and 14. We had a lot of help but could have used more brothers to cover all doors at all Masses. We did get eight prospects (Half from our Insurance Field Agent and his family. Yes, Joe Flores and his family showed up to assist.) The Fraternal Benefits Night was lightly attended, but those brothers that did attend got to speak with our Insurance Field Agent and brother Richard Cornell, a lawyer, about wills and living trusts among other important subjects. The council will conduct another fraternal benefits night early next year, and hopefully more brothers and their wives will attend. The council is looking for a new membership chairman. 3 Page 3 Novena for Life Our second Novena requested by the Knights of Columbus California will conclude Saturday, October A 9 day Novena for life will begin on January and conclude January , followed by a Life Walk on January The Novena and Life Walk will involve many of our Parrish Ministries with an overall theme of Parrish unity. I invite all of my brother Knights and their families to participate in this event. Please mark your calendars for these upcoming events. Michael Mac McWilliams Novena for Life Chairman Knights of Columbus Council Golden Knight Program Quarterly Awards As of the new Columbian year, our Council established the Golden Knight Program. This program assigns points to Brother Knights based on their support of Council activities. The winners for the first quarter of the Columbian year (July- September) were announced at our October Council meeting as follows: John Giltner, Bill Uberti, Michael McWilliams, Richard Weiner, and John Beauharnois. Congratulations to all the winners for all your volunteer efforts! As a reminder, points are awarded as follows: 1 point for attending each General and Officer s meeting 1 point per hour for Knights volunteer work 5 points per month for Program Chairs (e.g.: Worthy Shephard, Faith, Family, Community, and Life in Action Chairs, and Golden Knight Chair) 5 Points per day for Event Chairs (e.g.: Fish Bake, Blood Drive, E-waste, and Free Throw Contest) We will have new winners each quarter and, for the end of year, announce the top 3 to 5 for the year. The Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, and Financial Secretary are ineligible to receive awards or prizes. Supporting Homeless Veterans with a Sundries Collection The council needs 15 minutes of your time BEFORE YOUR USUAL MASS to say thank-you. Parishioners will be bringing the following items to collection bins located on the Church Patio on Saturday or Sunday, November 10 & 11, 2018: Reading Glasses, Disposable Safety Razor, Shampoo & Conditioner, Alcohol-free Lotion, Alcohol-free Deodorant, Combs/Brushes, Toothpaste, Toothbrush/Denture Brush, Shaving Cream/Gel, and Denture Adhesive. 4 Page 4 IT S TIME FOR SOME DUNGENESS CRAB! Yes, Brothers, it s time for some Dungeness crab and a lot more! Our upcoming Knights Crab Fest Family Buffet & Raffle is coming up in 3 short months on the night before the Super Bowl on, February 2, 2019 from 6:30-9PM in the Holy Family Center. The menu will be largely the same as last year with some new twists for seafood and non-seafood eaters, great beverages and we ll have a terrific raffle and maybe even a unique auction! Brother Chef Michel Malecot of The French Gourmet Catering Restaurant & Bakery has again agreed to assist us with this event and turn out very tasty cuisine. We are currently looking for raffle items so if you have a unique item that you think would be great for the raffle, please let me know THIS MONTH as we are in the final stages of printing our flyers and posters. Ticket sales begin on Saturday, December 1st and go through Sunday, January 27th. WANNA GO TO THE DINNER FOR FREE?? Then help us sell tickets on the patio after Mass. There will be a signup sheet on the Council website by our General Meeting on November 7th. For every $500 worth of tickets you sell, you ll receive one FREE ticket to the dinner. Sell $1,000 worth of tickets? Get 2 FREE TICKETS. Selling tickets is great for Knights who would rather join us for dinner that night. Those who can help in the kitchen and during the event that night will also eat FREE. Tickets will also be sold online at Dinner prices will likely be the same as earlier this year but we will make the final determination by November 15th as Crab season opens on November 1st. Right now, ticket prices will start at $50 for adults down to $10 for children 12 and under. Raffle tickets will be $10 each and 5 for $40. The EARLIER YOU BUY YOUR TICKETS THE MORE CHANCES YOU HAVE TO WIN OUR WEEKLY DRAWINGS FOR RESTAURANT GIFT CARDS, so buy EARLY!
