1 February 2018 SFX Knights Newsletter St. Francis Xavier the Missionary Council # In Service to One, In Service to All Council Meetings held at St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday 7:00 P.M Newtowne Neck Road, Compton, MD Grand Knight s Report February 2018 Brother Knights, I don t know why it is but Januaries continue to be good months for us. Maybe it s because it s too cold to enjoy the bounties of life in Southern Maryland. We have four new members: Herb Male, Paul Roman, Dr. Dan Geary, and Dr. Mike Perraut. Those four plus Matt Cosgrove, Joseph Marino, and John Morgan also attained 3 rd Degree Knighthood this month. Congratulations to all. We had a great pancake breakfast on the 29 th. Not only was everything delicious (especially the blueberry pancakes they were a big hit), but we also had a lot of help in the kitchen. Father Rob had talked it up at the Masses so we had more customers than ever before and we needed the extra help. Thank you to everyone that helped: Bob Bowles, John Breck, Mike DeManss, Tommy Howe, Jonathan Lowe, Herb Male, George Morgan, James Morgan, John Morgan, Mike Perraut, Dale Rebarchick, Paul Roman, Matt Wilson, Tommy Howe and Gordon Long (a parishioner). We made over $1,000 to help the Our Community Charities.

2 Our Annual Survey of Fraternal Activities showed how busy we were last year: this time we volunteered more than 12,000 hours to our families, church and community! Well done, and my thanks to all. As always, please help when you can, it s meaningful. Vivat Jesus! Mike Holton, Grand Knight Council #10957 Chaplain s Report Knights of Columbus Chaplain s Reflection February 2018 As we move closer to Lent, which begins on February 14, I d like to reflect on why we place so much importance on attending Holy Mass. St. John Vianney, known as the patron saint of parish priests, once said: If we knew the value of the Mass, we would die for joy. At every Mass Jesus Christ, in the person of the priest, offers Himself to God the Father for us and we receive Him in the Eucharist. That s why we call it the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. What happened over 2,000 years ago at Calvary is made present in mystery at every Mass. Bishop Fulton Sheen once said that the Mass is like God reaching to Calvary and laying hold of Christ on the Cross and planting Him down in front of us. No wonder why St. John Vianney could say that we would die for joy if we truly knew the value of the Mass. Before I entered the seminary, I remember what a great gift it was for me to attend daily Mass. I believe it was a vital part in my discerning a call to the priesthood. See if you can attend at least one daily Mass a week this Lent. Below are some reflections on the infinite value of Holy Mass that I found from an excellent pamphlet. They are worth pondering and praying over:

3 At the hour of death, the Holy Masses you have heard devoutly will be your greatest consolation. Every Mass will go with you to Judgment and will plead pardon for you. Be every Mass you can diminish the temporal punishment due to your sins, more or less, according to your fervor. By devoutly assisting at Holy Mass you render the greatest homage possible to the Sacred Humanity of Our Lord. Through the Holy Sacrifice, Our Lord Jesus Christ supplies for many of your negligences and omissions. He forgives you all the venial sins which you are determined to avoid. The Power of Satan over you is diminished. By piously hearing Holy Mass you afford the Souls in Purgatory the greatest possible relief. One Holy Mass heard during your life will be of more benefit to you than many heard for you after your death. Through the Holy Mass you are preserved from many dangers and misfortunes which would otherwise have befallen you. During Holy Mass you kneel amid a multitude of holy angels, who are present at the adorable sacrifice with reverential awe. Through Holy Mass you are blessed in your temporal goods and affairs. You bring down God s blessings upon yourself and your family. You appease God s just anger for the sins of the world. You stand with Mary, John, and the pious women at the foot of the Cross. You are the closest you can be to heaven on earth. This Lent, let s renew our love for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. I ll be giving a talk on the meaning of Holy Mass on Sunday, February 25 at 9:15 am in the church. I hope you will be able to join me. Please stay tuned for more details. 6 District Deputy s Report My Brothers The Lenten season is upon us once again. Have you decided how you will prepare for this year, what sacrifice you will make? Whatever it may be will pale in comparison to the sacrifices made by Christians in the Middle East. Some have given their live instead of giving up their faith and our religion. If nothing else this Lenten season, pray for our brothers and sisters in faith. Make at least one other person aware of the persecutions occurring today. Support their cause and needs in any way you feel. If we do not speak out now, then when will we? Remember the power of prayer, the power of unity. One Knight can make a difference, every member counts.
