Our Grand Knight s Report My Brother Knights, Many of you don t know me well as I have not been in council # 8980 very long. I first joined the Knights 23 years ago in North East Pa. where I served as Deputy Grand Knight and Grand Knight for several years in council # Saint Peter the Fisherman Parish. I joined the ranks of the fourth Degree 21 years ago and was attached to the Pocono Mountain Assembly # 981 where I served as Faithful Navigator. I am very pro-military, as a veteran myself of the U.S Air Force where I served for 6 years. I held a Top Secret Security clearance as a weapons system specialist. I worked on the Mc Donald Douglas Aircraft (F-4 Fighter Jets.) Most recently I finished my working career as a Construction Project Manager/Chief Engineer. I helped many families with my involvement in the Habitat for Humanity Program. My grand finale was to be a construction Manager for the T.V. Show, Extreme Makeover Home Edition. Back to our Council news, the golf tournament was a great success, we had over 90 members participate. A special thanks to Brother Ron Bellonio, the Tournament Chairman. See the photos on page 6 and more on our Council 8980 Facebook Page. we have the honor of hosting a Formation and Knighthood Degree (2nd and 3rd Degree) in the Duffy Center. We have many first degree members and this is a way to avoid traveling to another Parish. Please let our Financial Secretary (Frank Lovas) or myself know, so we can get the necessary paper work completed. We had our Election of Officers in our June Business Meeting, and I would like to congratulate all our new and reelected Officers. I look forward to working with every one of you. Our Council is truly great and we must acknowledge our Past Grand Knight John Olsen for all he did, as well as all our Past Grand Knights. Please remember that there will be no Rosary night in July and August. Since July 4 is right around the bend, see the column of little known facts about Independence Day and how we celebrate it. Article on page 9. I hope to see all my Brothers at our next Business Meeting on August 3, 2017 in PAC hall at 7pm. (all Officers will meet at 6pm) Remember Brothers, INDIVIDUALS WIN TROPHIES BUT TEAMS WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS. May God Bless you and May God Bless our Country. Vivat Jesus. For all our first degree Brothers, our council has a great opportunity for you. Congratulations to Knight of the Month: Our Knight of the month is currently serving as a three year Trustee, he is our immediate Past Grand Knight, Sir Knight John Olsen, Brother John has always helped in all our Knights of Columbus functions, he is very involved in the council activities, and as a personal note John has been always available to help and guide me as I transition into my new role as Grand Knight. And his guidance is not over yet as I enter some unknown ground in my position It is with great pleasure for me to present July Knight of the month to Past Grand Knight Brother John Olsen. My choice for July Family of the month was not difficult for me, I chose Joe and Mary Lynch I did not know Brother Joe very well, but I got to know him and Mary when I was preparing for our July Installation Social. Being new to the council I asked around for names of folks that may help with the social. I received Joe and Mary s name and as soon as I called Joe he was more than willing to help. A few days after asking Joe he had surgery on his hand, he did not hesitate to keep his word. It is my pleasure to present July Family of the month to Joe and Mary Lynch.

5. Knight of the Year Award; Family of the Year Award; 1st Degree Anniversaries RICHARD M. FOX GK John Olsen said My selection for Knight of the Year was an easy one for me. He has been a Knight for 5 years, and our Membership Director since He is PGK Tim McGraw s go to guy when he is not able to be there for the Help for Kids deliveries of food. He is an integral part of our golf tournaments. He is always ready to lend a hand in any of our events. He also spends time teaching St. Michael students the game of golf. He does all this with a smile and a can do attitude. It is my great pleasure to be able to present our Knight of the Year to: Rick Fox. GK John Olsen also said, My selection of the Family of the Year was also an easy one for me. They have been very active helping with food for our meetings and rosaries. They have entertained us at our Christmas and fundraising parties. They have helped with our projects and events. They don t seem to know the word NO. 7 6. Annual Golf Tournament Council 8980 s Annual Golf Tournament was held at the International Golf Club on Saturday, June 24. Over 90 golfers participated on a very warm and sunny day. After a continental breakfast, the golfers were out and about in their scramble. Below are some photos from that outing, and more can be found on our facebook page.

7. Columbus Hope Report; Knights of Columbus Council 8980 Columbus Hope Foundation June 2017 Update The 2017 Columbus Hope Foundation drive is underway and has been very encouraging to this point. We ve had five events and almost all have grossed more than last year. Brother Falcone was able to get us approved at Lowe s on 707 as a replacement for Bi-Lo in Murrells Inlet and that was a great collection. We have also seen a drop in the number of no shows and that helps the Captains. We have many events left on the schedule so expect phone calls recruiting you and your spouse or grandchildren to volunteer for a collection point. Please do what you can to help and recognize where the money goes. Captain Lee Steele told me that it was fun and he s on board to Captain again. I am working on the Doo Wop Forever on October 13th and plan to give Knights and members of the parish first chance to purchase tickets. Mark the date and more information will be out soon. Thank you for all that you do! WE ARE ONE PLEASE GET ON BOARD May God Continue to Bless St. Michaels Council 8980 and our Special Children

MICHEL YEAR TRUSTEE: SK JOHN KOKOSKA YEAR TRUSTEE: SK JOHN AVERELLA YEAR TRUSTEE: SK DENNY LACZO CORP COMMANDER: SK DON MAHER I would like to THANK Ken Hein PFN for the superb job he did this past year. He took a great Assembly and made it better with all of his hard work and enthusiasm. I know it will be a very difficult job following the great officers we have had, but I will try to the best of my ability, and I will draw greatly on their their valuable knowledge and leadership. Some of the happenings in the next few weeks are as follows: We will have the installations of officers on July 16, 2017 at 2 P.M. at St James Church in Conway. Anyone wishing to attend this please notify myself or Jim Adee so that we can give them an accurate count. The cost is $12.00 if you wish to stay for the dinner immediately following the installation, also, formal attire is required if you are participating in the installation. There is also a Fourth Degree Exemplification scheduled for 9/30/17 at St Joseph's in Charleston, so if you know anyone wishing to obtain 4th Degree let them know. There will be more information posted as the time grows closer. We do have a budget meeting shortly and anyone wishing to nominate an organization for a donation, please contact one of the officers with all the information about the organization and how they contribute to our veterans. Our Assembly is always looking for ways to help any and all veterans. Hopefully, we will be able to have another Quilts of Valor ceremony at St. Michael s in the near future and I implore all to attend this most gratifying event. We are also, planning with our Color Corp Commander Don Maher to have a flag folding ceremony after the Masses that have not had the pleasure of this most memorable event. One other need is the 4th Degree team is looking for volunteers for up coming Exemplifications, so if you are interested in this speaking part please notify one of the officers of your wishes and we will relay them on for you. Thank everyone for all of your valuable help and information, I can use all that I can possibly get. Have a Happy and Safe Fourth of July. Brothers, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for making the past year as great as it was. Each of you who took part in the many instances when we were involved, including such events as placing flags at Hill Crest Cemetery for both Veteran s Day and Memorial Day, Honor Guard at Confirmation and 1 st Holy Communion, Silver Rose Service, Veteran s Day and Memorial Day celebrations at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, Quilts of Valor Presentation, Holy Thursday Mass and Adoration, four Flag Folding ceremonies and the list goes on. I would be remiss if I did not single out our Corps Commander Donald Maher for his hard work in all areas in which we participated. He made my life much easier. To the officers this past year, I say thanks for all the support you showed me. Hopefully you all think the year was as good as I do. I now ask all the members of the Assembly to give the same support to our new Navigator, Larry Berry and his officers as we now start on a new fraternal year. Again, my thanks. PFN Ken Hein Corps Commander Report for May - by Don Maher Fraternally yours, Larry Berry Faithful Navigator There was no Honor Guard activity to report for this issue. Stay tuned for upcoming news next month.

9. Independence Day - 10 Fun Facts For many, The Fourth of July is a day filled with family, friends, good food, and fireworks. We often look at it as a fun summer celebration to celebrate our flag, enjoy a busy city parade and snack on cotton candy at local fairs, but Independence Day is so much more than that. It s easy to forget the details behind the holiday, but we are here to help remind you. We have ten fun facts about the history of Independence Day so you can be reminded as to why we celebrate on The Fourth of July. The Fourth Of July 1. The Fourth of July is more than just a celebration of summertime it s a time to celebrate our freedom and how far we have come. 2. The Declaration of Independence began as a letter to King George to explain why the Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain. 3. The Declaration of Independence was started on July 2, 1776 and the Continental Congress approved the final wording on July 4. The American colonies were declared free and independent states. 4. The first Independence Day was celebrated on July 8, 1776 and the official signing took place on August people signed the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson wrote the majority of it. 6. The first Independence Day on July 8, 1776 took place in Philadelphia. The White House celebrated Independence Day for the first time in The Declaration of Independence has five parts. They are: the Preamble, the Statement of Human Rights, Charges Against Human Rights, Charges Against the King and Parliament, and the Statement of Separation and Signatures. 8. According to census.gov, 2.5 million people celebrated the first Independence Day, compared to million people today. 9. July 4 was officially declared a holiday in 1870, nearly one hundred years after the Declaration of Independence was written. 10. Currently, the oldest Independence Day celebration in the U.S. is held in Bristol, Rhode Island marks this year as the 241st Independence Day.

10. Address Change form; Catholic Q & A Every month, about a week before we put out the Compass newsletter, the Financial Secretary sends me updates of people who have changed addresses but did not inform us. Just this month, we had ELEVEN changes, and the U.S. Postal Service charged us nearly $ We are asking you to cut out the form below and if you are changing your address to contact us and let us know (unless you are receiving the FULL COLOR digital version via ). You may call the Compass editor, Ken Pankowski, at: , him at: knights.kenpankowski@gmail.com or send in the form below via U.S. Mail to: Knights of Columbus Council #8980, P.O. Box 14710, Surfside Beach, SC Name OLD Address City State ZIP NEW Address City State ZIP Q. What is the Book of Stephen, and why is it not in the Bible? A. The Book of Stephen is also known as the Revelation of Stephen and the Apocalypse of Stephen. The work is clearly mostly fictional, since it portrays the death of the Jewish scholar Gamaliel as happening shortly before the death of St. Stephen, yet all other sources tell of Gamaliel living at least a decade past the stoning of Stephen. It appears to have been a work of Gnostic Christians rather than orthodox Christians. Q. Some people say that Ecclesiastes 9:5 proves that prayer for the dead and to saints is useless. Is that true? A. For the living know that they are to die, but the dead no longer know anything. There is no further recompense for them, because all memory of them is lost.(ecc 9:5). Prior to the resurrection of Jesus, all the dead were in Sheol, and after the Resurrection the righteous were brought to heaven. The author of Ecclesiastes is writing within the context of all the dead being in Sheol. In Jewish tradition, Sheol was a shadowy place where the dead awaited judgment. The full revelation of heaven had not yet occurred (Heb 1:1-2). The Jewish concept of Sheol developed over time and can't be locked into any one Bible verse. We must also take into account the context of Ecclesiastes. The book is written from a very human-centric point of view. It is written almost as if by a human bystander to the events of life and records the appearance of things rather than their ultimate reality.
