2 Our Grand Knight s Report My Brother Knights, I hope that you have recovered from Easter celebrations. As usual the parking for all masses in Church and Duffy, with the exception of the 6 AM mass, was a problem. But we can t build a church and parking spaces to match the crowd for Easter and Christmas. I would like to thank our brother Knights that came out Wednesday to stuff and Saturday place the eggs for our annual parish Easter egg hunt. The children and adults were treated to a big surprise when the Easter Bunny (PGK Gil Cushing) came hopping out. I think that he was the most photographed at the event. Even the parents wanted to have photo with him. Thank you Gil; I think we should continue that for next year. The parents were very appreciative for the fun that we provided for their children. I like to thank Nick Mateo, he was in charge of our successful Easter egg hunt. The photos and story are on page 10. We will present the slate of officers that has been nominated by the nominating committee at our May 4th business meeting. We will have our election of officers at our June 1 business meeting. Our council has been given the honor of hosting the Silver Rose. Fr. Ed has been kind enough to schedule a mass on Sunday May 7th at 3:00 PM in church. Please make every effort to participate in this mass. The Silver Rose, one of 3, has been at the Vatican and blessed by 3 Popes (Pope St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict, and Pope Francis). The roses were created in honor of our Lady of Guadalupe. All the information on that event is on page 9. I have great news for our 1st degree brothers. On Saturday August 12th our council has been given the honor of hosting the Formation and the Knighthood degrees in the Duffy Center. This early notice should give all of you very little chance for having any excuses for not getting to full Knighthood. I would like to see all of our 41, 1st degree brothers step up and receive the Knighthood degree and this without having to travel to another parish. I can promise you it doesn t get any easier than this. Make sure you see the flyer for our Annual Golf Outing on pg. 5, and if you are a golfer, get your team ready for a great day at the International Golf Club. There s also a nice pictorial essay on pg. 6 about out Knights and spouses that worked for the Spring Games of the Horry County Special Olympics. Special Olympics is one of the events we raise funds for. Again this year we will be giving a $1, Scholarship to one female and one male student whose family is registered here at St. Michaels. More info on page 6. Full 2 page forms will be available in the narthex of the church within a few weeks. And make sure to catch up on all the 4 Degree News and also the Honor Guard news as well. Both are on page 8. Please remember that there are no Rosary nights in June, July and August. I hope to see you at our business meeting and at the mass for the Silver Rose. May God bless and keep you. Phone # and is amcox1969@aol.com. May God Continue to Bless St. Michaels Council 8980 and our Special Children Q. My Protestant friends say that their church goes by the Bible Alone, but that the Catholic Church has added a lot of man-made traditions to the Word of God Is that true? No, it is not true. Protestants have as their sole rule of faith the written Word of God, which we find in Sacred Scripture. The Catholic Church has as its sole rule of faith, the entire Word of God, as it is found in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. All of the Word of God was at one time passed on orally Sacred Tradition. Eventually, some of Sacred Tradition was written down this became Sacred Scripture, which is written tradition. However, Scripture itself tells us that not all of the things that Jesus said and did were written down. And listen to what Paul says about tradition : 2 Thess 2:15, So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter. Traditions! Traditions taught by word of mouth, in other words, oral tradition, and traditions taught by letter. Traditions which they are being told to stand firm and hold to.

First of all, we had a successful Annual Dinner on April 8th at the American Legion Hall. A wonderful dinner was served. They tell me that the best part of the night was that I kept my remarks to about 5 minutes. But during those 5 minutes I was able to recognize several of our members who have given time and energy to the Assembly, Council, Parish and fellow man. These men were presented with St. Michael Challenge Coins: Larry Berry, Jim Buckley, Mike Gray, Walt Meier, Ken Pankowski and Joe Wanovich. Additionally I had the privilege of presenting the Sir Knight of the Year Award to our Color Corps Commander Donald Maher. All of these awards were well deserved. When you see any of them offer your congratulations. You will find Donald Maher s report on the Honor Guard activities in another portion of this compass. I just want to say thanks to all the members who took part in the Holy Thursday Mass and Adoration. Our Flag Folding Team was asked to make a presentation on April 22nd at the he Crabtree Memorial Gymnasium in Market Commons. It was well presented by the team and well received by the audience. There is a 4th Degree Exemplification scheduled for June 3rd in Taylors SC. While we will not be attending this Exemplification at this time due to the distance to travel back and forth, (over 4.5 hours each way), we think there will be an exemplification somewhere along the coast in the fall and we will promote this for all 3 rd Degree members in the Council. We are planning a Day of Recollection here at St. Michael on June 8th (The date is awaiting availability as of this writing) Fr. Greg Caiazzo will be leading the day. He is a Navy Chaplain and he will focus his presentation on the role of the Chaplain in the life of the Military today. As many of you know, he is an excellent presenter and you should make every effort to attend. This will be open to all members of the Assembly and Council. Officers take note: The Installation of Officers will be held on Sunday July 16, 2017 starting at 2:00 PM in St. James Church in Conway. All officers need to be in attendance. This installation is done in conjunction with the Assemblies from St. James, St. Andrews, Precious Blood and St. Mary Star of the Sea Assemblies. A dinner will follow. In addition to the officers, wives and other members of the Assembly are welcome to attend. More information will be forthcoming. The Honor Guard will be participating at the Memorial Day celebration at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Corp members will be notified of the time. Peace, Think ahead to the May meeting. It will be held on Thursday May 25th at 7:00 pm. Being that this is the Feast of the Ascension, it is a Holy Day of Obligation. You can attend Mass at 6:00 pm and then walk over to PAC Hall and be on time for the meeting. The Officers will meet at 5:00 PM and then attend Mass and the meeting This is an important meeting, as the election of officers for the fraternal year will take place as a part of the meeting. At the April meeting, the nominating committee presented a slate of officers for your consideration. There will be an opportunity for nominations from the floor as long as the person being nominated is present and attests to the fact that he will accept the nomination and that he will serve to term if elected. 10 10. Easter Egg Hunt; Decoration Day / Memorial Day Joe Wanovich, Ed Petras, Emil Silvoy and Don Maher at the prize table. The Easter Bunny and Sgt. Nick Mateo all smiles. GK John Olsen oversees the start of The K of C Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Toddlers scouring the Duffy Ctr. for filled eggs. Holy Saturday morning brought about the Easter Egg Hunters. While parents enjoyed coffee and donuts provided by the Knights, their children were busy scavenging for plastic eggs filled with all kinds of wonderful goodies. The weather was perfect and the look of delight in their faces was enough to make the event a total success. In May 1868, General John A. Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Union veterans group known as the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a decree that May 30 should become a nationwide day of commemoration for the more than 620,000 soldiers killed in the recently ended Civil War. On Decoration Day, as Logan dubbed it, Americans should lay flowers and decorate the graves of the war dead whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land. American s embraced the notion of Decoration Day immediately. That first year, more than 27 states held some sort of ceremony, with more than 5,000 people in attendance at a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. By 1890, every former state of the Union had adopted it as an official holiday. But for more than 50 years, the holiday was used to commemorate those killed just in the Civil War, not in any other American conflict. It wasn t until America s entry into World War I that the tradition was expanded to include those killed in all wars, and Memorial Day was not officially recognized nationwide until the 1970s, with America deeply embroiled in the Vietnam War. Although the term Memorial Day was used beginning in the 1880s, the holiday was officially known as Decoration Day for more than a century, when it was changed by federal law. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 finally went into effect, moving Memorial Day from its traditional observance on May 30 (regardless of the day of the week), to a set day the last Monday in May.
