The Council continues to be financially strong and well prepared to enter into fraternal year I wish our new Grand Knight and his soon to be elected officers much success in the coming year. The weekend of May 16 th we kicked off our Operation Hope campaign at Saint Michael Church. The Council looks for another strong year and with your help, we will exceed our last year goals. The Council received the Silver Award at the awards breakfast at the State Convention. I want to thank John Fry, Jim White and Donald Maher for their leadership in making Operation Hope a huge success. On May 15 th the Council hosted the Blessing of the Bikes. Fr. Ed blessed the Bikes during Harley Week. The Council participated with cold drinks and fellowship. On Saturday June 6 th DGK Tim McGraw and his committee will tee off with a shotgun start at the International Golf Club for our annual golf tournament. We need lots of sunshine and warm weather. This Rose is one of six Silver Roses that has been traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Silver Rose pays special tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. A special prayer service will be held at St. Michael Church at 2:00PM Sunday. I ask that all attend. The Officer Installation is scheduled for Thursday July 2, Please mark your calendars to attend this wonderful event. Fr Ed will have Mass and the Installation of officers will follow. We will assemble at the Duffy Center for a reception with our new Grand Knight and his officers. Just let me summarize the past year in four words. We grew the Council. I will always feel blessed to have had the opportunity to lead this Council as its Grand Knight. I want to thank all of you for your support, volunteerism, dedication, and above all your friendship. I am very proud to be called your Brother. My favorite prayer to you is this. 5 5. SILVER ROSE PROGRAM - One Life - One Rose Beginning in April 2015, six Silver Roses will begin their journey across North America, from Canada to the United States to Mexico. Our Lady of Guadalupe had done so much for her people in Mexico that, in 1960, the Columbian Squires, the official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus, wanted to give something back to her. The first rose was a natural rose, and after a year it had decomposed. The Squires were so full of inspiration they decided to make yet another relay run in 1961, but due to the condition of the Rose it could not be used again. After contacting Grand Knight Arthur Mount at Council 1134, Reverend Edward Gatfield (FatherTed) and Bishop John C. Cody decided to make a bronze rose and sent it to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. When Fray Antonio de Jesus Sacedon and the Squires of Circle 660 in Monterrey heard of the bronze rose, they decided to call upon Brother Miguel Martinez Montoya (owner of Joyeria Rosine) in Monterrey to make them a similar rose. The idea was to make a silver rose because silver is one of Mexico s precious metals. The jeweler saw a beautiful bed of roses in a garden owned by Mrs. Shirla Ostwowk. He asked if he could have a rose as a model for the making of the Silver Rose. Mr. Montoya explained what had happened to the original rose in 1960 and what Canada was doing for Our Lady in Monterrey. Once she heard about the making of the Silver Rose she gladly gave him a rose and the stem to which it was attached. The rose bush from which the rose was removed was called Rose of Peace. The first Silver Rose was blessed by Bishop Alfonso Espino Silva. It was sent to New Haven to William L. Piedmont, Director of Fraternal Services at the Supreme Council Office. The Bronze Rose was blessed by Bishop Cody. It was received by Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart. Archbishop Francis J. Spellman of New York so admired both roses he kept them for a special Mass before they were flown to Texas. After 1961, the program was conducted by the Knights of Texas and Mexico and the Our Lady of Guadalupe Province of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus until the mid 1990s, when it was adopted as a Supreme Council program which grew to encompass three Silver Rose Routes Today six roses are run along different North American routes from Canada to México through 38 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces before meeting in Laredo, Texas. The Silver Rose will be at St. Michael s Catholic Church at 2:00 p.m. On Sunday, June 14, 2015.

6 6. EVENTS Spring Blessing of the Bikes Get your motor runnin, head out on the highway, lookin for adventure in whatever comes our way. Bikers from far away and locals too, came our way to the Second Annual Blessing of the Bikes on Friday May 15 at St. Michael s Church. The Knights were there with ice cold water and soda, and St. Michael s medallions, and holy cards and rosaries too. Some of our school students got an extra treat as well. Fr. Ed Greets the Bikers The Knights are always ready with Hospitality for our Biker guests Our guests were excited to see all the smiling young faces and possible future bikers that they gave many of the school children a special treat and hoisted them up on their bikes for a fun moment and that brought out the cameras for a great photo-op. I ll bet Fr. Ed wanted in on that too! A big smile on a future Biker? Smiles EVERYWHERE! I can t reach the starter! Blessed, Refreshed, and ready to roll! Blessings finished, Fr. Ed is ready to roll with GK Gil Cushing

9 9. CHANGING OF THE GUARD Part I By Ken Pankowski I ve had the distinct honor to visit Arlington National Cemetery, especially the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, now known as the Tomb of the Unknowns, since there are now tombs for those who served in WWI, WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. I ve also watched the touching ceremony of the Changing of the Guards and it is so dramatic. We are now having our own changing of the guard here at the Compass Newsletter. A few months ago, our Grand Knight Gil Cushing was making his council report at the Assembly Meeting and he mentioned that Aelred Pereira had told him that after 8 years he wanted to step down as Editor of The Compass. Gil asked at that time if anyone wanted to take over and that Aelred would help the transition by staying to the end of the Fraternal Year. I approached Gil that evening and said that I d like to do it. Since I have some good desktop publishing software, and imaging software, I figured I could do it. It s been quite a bit more than I realized, but I m getting the hang of it, and we had a test run a few weeks ago, and it s looking like we are GO for Launch. I learned that it s not just copying and pasting, typing and moving text and images around but actually going in for the better part of the morning at the parish office to set up, print, fold, address and mail nearly 400 of these 12 page newsletters. I know I ll have the help of a good team, and that will make it easier. This is my way of telling you that for EIGHT YEARS Aelred has been producing a TOP NOTCH publication and I hope I can in some way, fill his shoes. Aelred, you ve helped me learn so much. We all owe a great debt of gratitude to a tireless worker who put out a first class publication. When you see Aelred thank him! Thanks, Aelred! Part II The Fourth Degree Assembly 2107 Election winners are: Faithful Navigator - John Kokoska Faithful Friar - Fr.
