2 OUR GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT My Brother Knights, With our fraternal year approaching its end, I'm pleased to report that the Council is in good shape, continuing to live out those precepts that our organization was founded on, including charity, unity, and fraternity. We helped a lot of charitable organizations these past 10 months and also assisted our beloved parish in many ways. To be a Knight at Council 8980 is an honor along with a responsibility to do what is right through humble service. Never have I been so surrounded with such loyal men, whose actions speak much louder than words! At this past month's State Convention our council received three awards, including the Silver Achievement Award, reaching 143% of our goal for the Hope Foundation, also, a Honor Council Award for Inter-Council Competition, and finally, the State Catholicity Award, received by Joan Cushing, the wife of our PGK and present District Deputy, Gil Cushing. Congratulations Council 8980! Our PGK and Knight of the Year for last year, John Fry has information about Columbus Hope and Help4Kids/Backpack Buddies on pg. 6 and the Pelican Park food drives on Mondays, and that s on pg. 10. Another school year is coming to a close and our Council, through the efforts of over thirty knights has delivered all Help 4 Kids backpack buddies for a third year in a row to over 30 schools weekly, fulfilling our promise as believers in Jesus and His message to feed the hungry, and clothe those in need. Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. This charity has helped define who we are as a Council and the dedication we have as Catholic men. And, it seems that PGK Ken Hein and PGK- PFN John Luse have got the sailing bug again, and have another cruise lined up for Feb Full page ad is on pg 5. Our 8980 Knights and families had a great day at Pelican Park for the spring games of the Special Olympics. Knights manned tents and had water for the Special Olympians. See photos and a story on pg.7 Don t forget that the Needy Scholarships are still looking for donations of money or toiletries. John Luse and his wife, Carol, have a notice on pg 7. Dom Falcone is again heading up the flags for veteran s graves at Hillcrest Cemetery. Placement will be on May 23 and pickup on June 6. Contact Dom for more info at Also brothers, remind any high school senior who belongs to our parish that our Council gives a $1000 to a young man and $1000 to a young lady heading for college; contact Scott Jordan for more details. I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers after being caught in the middle of a terrible and violent circumstance. The reconstructive surgery to my face went well and I am on the slow road to healing. Cathy and I are so grateful for our council and parish family. Please continue to pray for each other and our council Grand Knight Tim McGraw INDEX OF CONTENTS Announcements: Adoration; Birthdays; Good of the Order; Prayers 2017 Cruise! Please be reminded we have our FIRST collection at St. Michael s Church following the masses on Saturday 05/14/16 and Sunday 5/15/16. 8 8. Fourth Degree Grand Strand Assembly #2107 News & Corp Commander s Report ASSEMBLY 2107 OFFICERS 2015 FAITHFUL FRIAR: REV. MICHEL FAITHFUL INNER SENTINEL: SK DAVID KENNEDY YEAR TRUSTEE: SK DENNY LACZO YEAR TRUSTEE: SK BERNIE LODRICK CORP COMMANDER: SK DON MAHER Brother Sir Knights; Welcome to May, the month of Mary. For those of us who attended catholic school, celebrating Mary s month meant daily mass. Of course, the good sisters made sure that we were at mass every day, or else. It would be nice if more of our brother Knights could participate in daily mass. Of course, many have other obligations and can t make it, but for those of us that can make it, give it a try. It s a lot more rewarding than watching ESPN or reading our daily paper, which only takes about five minutes anyway. On 6 April, we used the funds allocated for the VA clinic to buy many needed items. After consulting with the head of volunteer services, we were given a comprehensive list of items that they needed. Besides the $ from our budget, $47.00 was donated from brothers and Walmart donated a $50.00 gift certificate, for a total of $ that we got to spend. This resulted in a packed van of goods for our veterans, which was delivered a same day. Many thanks to those who made donations, and to John Lock for his invaluable help. The patriotic essays from the students of St. Michael School have been collected and distributed to the brothers who volunteered to act as judges for this contest. The subject this year is Discuss a prominent Catholic in American history. We received essays that ranged from Tom Brady to John Kennedy, quite a range. Now, the judges have the tough job of picking the 1st and 2nd place winners from the 5th and 6th grades and also from the 7th and 8th grades. The winners will be presented with gift cards at the schools awards assembly in early June. Under the leadership of SK Dom Falcone, we will again be placing flags on all veteran s graves in Hillcrest Cemetery for Memorial Day. This is an endeavor where the phrase, Many hands make for lighter work, has never been truer. If any of you can possibly make it, we usually start between 0830 and 0900 and the whole job takes about an hour or so. This year, we will be placing the flags on Monday, May 23rd, and removing them on Monday, June 6th. If there is any change to these times or dates, we will advertise them in the church bulletin. Finally, let us share a quick story from Catholic grade school. In fourth grade at St. Joseph s school in Collingdale, PA, Sister Helen Anthony told us that, if we didn t pray with our hands in the upright position, the angels would fall off our fingertips. She also told us that if we left mass before the priest left the altar, that mass didn t count towards our reward in heaven. Unfortunately, there seem to be many parishioners or visitors that take off right after communion. As knights, wearing our name badges, it s important that we set a good example. We are quite visible, and people should look at us and say, see those knights and how much they show reverence for the Blessed Sacrament, to paraphrase an old quote. Corps Commander Report for April - by Don Maher Vivat Jesu Faithful Navigator, John S. Kokoska, Jr. On April 16 and 17, St. Michael s Church had First Holy Communion at the 6 pm Mass on Saturday, and 11 am Mass on Sunday. There were 26 Communicants at the 6pm Mass, and 41 at the 11am Mass. A total of sixteen Sir Knights appeared in the Color Guard for the Masses. Submitted by Don Maher

9 9. Special - YOU make a difference; church bulletin bloopers A teacher in decided to honor each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made. She presented each of them with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters, which read, "Who I Am Makes A Difference". Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of impact recognition would have on the community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this acknowledgment ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the results, see who honored whom and report back to the class in about a week. One of the boys in the class went to a junior executive in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him the two extra ribbons and said, "We're doing a class project on recognition, and we'd like you to go out, find somebody to honor, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can acknowledge a third person to keep this acknowledgment ceremony going. Then please report back to me and tell me what happened." Later that day the junior executive went to see his boss, who was a grouchy fellow. He told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The junior executive asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and would he give him permission to put it on him. His surprised boss said, "Well sure." The junior executive took the blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss's jacket above his heart. As he gave him the last extra ribbon, he said, "Would you do me a favor? Would you take this extra ribbon and pass it on by honoring somebody else? The young boy who first gave me the ribbons is doing a project in school and he wants to keep this recognition ceremony going and find out how it affects people." That night the boss came home to his 14-year old son and sat him down. He said, "The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office and one of the junior executives came in and told me he admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius. Imagine, he thinks I'm a creative genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says 'Who I Am Makes A Difference' on my jacket and gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor." "As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honor with this ribbon and I thought about you. I want to honor you. My days are really hectic and when I come home I don't pay a lot of attention to you and sometimes I scream at you about your grades in school and your messy bedroom, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to sit here and, well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me. Besides your mother, you are the most important person in my life. You're a great kid and I love you!" The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he wouldn't stop crying. His whole body shook. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, "Dad, earlier tonight I sat in my room and wrote a letter explaining why I killed myself. I was going to commit suicide tonight after you were asleep. I just didn't think you cared at all." His Father found a heartfelt letter full of anguish and pain. The boss went back to work a changed man. He was no longer a grouch but made sure to let all his employees know that they made a difference. So, who you ARE makes a Difference! Church Bulletin Bloopers When parking on the north side of the church, please remember to park on an angel. Church office will be closed until opening. It remains closed after opening. It will reopen Monday. At the Ladies Liturgy Society this Thursday, Mrs. Smith will sing Put Me In My Little Bed accompanied by the pastor. If you need to heave during the Postlude, please do so quietly. ***Important Notice*** We are in the midst of our quadrennial/bi-annual election cycle. As members and citizens of the United States, we should be active participants in the process and cast our votes as our conscience dictates. However, I urge you to pray before going to the polls and seek guidance from Our Lord. I have one admonition; keep the Knights of Columbus out of the process. We are a fraternal organization with tax exempt status as a 501(C)8. To maintain this status, we must refrain from using our membership as a tool in the election. This means do not wear anything identifying yourself as a member of the Knight of Columbus while you are campaigning for an office or assisting a candidate who is seeking an elective office. We need to remember that we agreed never to bring political action into any Knights of Columbus event. When you come to a meeting or event, leave politics on the outside of the door.

10 10. Pelican Field; Rosary Night; CCD Breakfast; Knight in Home Care Pelicans Help 4 Kids / Back Pack Buddies Mondays The 2014 Pelican Baseball season has arrived. The MB Pelicans Baseball Program have designated all M o n d a y Night Home games as Help 4 Kids / Back Pack Buddies Mondays. Prior to each Monday Home game we will be collecting food and other donations for Help 4 Kids / Back Pack Buddies. Please contact Donald Maher, , to volunteer for this project. At our Council 8980 Monthly Rosary, which was well attended, our speaker after the Rosary was Louise Carson at the Children's Recovery Center. In the photo, our Council Treasurer, Bob Leewe is seen presenting a check to Mrs Carson. On Sunday April 24, our Knights of 8980 held a pancake and sausage breakfast for the St. Michael CCD students and staff. This undertaking began shortly after 8:00 am and continued well past 11:00. Those who helped in the preparation, cooking, serving were: Vin Vecchio, Earl Chester, Bob and Leasa Leewe, Larry Berry, John Lock, and Ken Pankowski. Thanks to Rich Sousa and his 6 th grade CCD class for their help in serving. Our breakfast cooks made over 550 pancakes and about 450 sausage patties. The kids loved time they had there and many thanked the Knights for their efforts. ***Special Thanks*** - to Melville Libby for standing in at Adoration Chapel for Vin Vecchio so Vin could work the breakfast. A long time Knight, who loved helping and volunteering is in an Assisted Living Facility. Jack Wagner, who has worked so diligently and loved working for Columbus Hope and helped with the Easter Parking, is in the Lakes at Litchfield, just north of Pawleys Island. He is in room 520, and he could really use some visitation from other Knights. It would definitely cheer him up. If you can get by there, please stop in and say hi and spend a few minutes (or more) with Jack. I know he d love the company.
