3 Our Grand Knight s Report My Brother Knights, I would like to start my report with an update from our August 12 Second and Third Degree. We were the hosting council and I am proud to give my Brother Knights some very encouraging and positive feedback. I spoke to our State Deputy Brother Michael Allen and our State Treasurer Brother Daniel Barton as well as our Past State Deputy Ronald Povero; they had nothing but praise for our Saint Michaels Council # They were impressed with the setup of the Duffy Center and very pleased with our turn out. We had 22 Brother Knights take their Third Degree and 12 Brother Knights take their Second Degree. A special thanks to Brother Jack Drust and his wife Rosalie for making our lunch. It was a very enjoyable lunch with great food, and that is a quote from our State Officers. The Degree team was a little short due to illness so Brother Ron Bellonio and I filled in as Guards for the Second Degree and Brother Tom Dellatore and I were Aids in the Third Degree Ceremony. I would like to personally welcome to the Ranks of the Third Degree our five members, from council # They are as follows, Brother James Rousseau, Brother Joseph T. Godish, Brother William Behl and our Council Youth Director Brother Mark Simmons Jr. and our School Principal Brother Lionel J. Martin; I welcome you all to full Knighthood. Brothers we are coming close to our Parish Picnic which will be on Sunday, October 1 st, I am sending a BIG thank you to Brother Rick Fox for chairing the picnic, help is always needed so see Rick if can participate in this event. September 21 st will start our Rosary Meeting at 7:00 PM in PAC Hall. I view this meeting as a great opportunity for prayer then a Social/Family night. You are all invite to join us with friends and family, I certainty look forward for this to start back up. As our new fraternal year gets well under way, our many programs and social events are in the planning stages and I could not do any of this if it were not for my Fellow Brothers. My sincere thanks and appreciation to all those working on making all our endeavors successful. At our business meeting on October 5th, I have a First Degree scheduled; however I have a bit of a dilemma. We currently have one young candidate that is waiting, and as many of you know I am not a big fan of assembling the Degree Team for one gentleman, so I ask all my Brother Knights if you have someone in mind for the Honors of the First Degree get a form 100 from Rick Fox and have it filled out and returned to Rick, Frank Lovas or me. I have also welcomed other councils in our District to send Candidates. Columbus Day is coming soon, and what else would be more fitting on Columbus Day weekend than to have a recruitment drive. Help is needed, so please see DGK. Nick Mateo or our Brother Ken Pankowski if you can help us. The plan is to speak at all Masses and give out paperwork to prospective Brothers as they leave the church. Also with the help from our School Principal who recently became a third-degree member, I plan on sending home flyers with the school children. We need your help to spread the Good News about the Order. Remember Brothers, there is nothing that you can t overcome with God on your side. May God Bless You and may God bless our Country. 7 6. The History of Labor Day What it means - Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. Legislation - Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, During the year four more states Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. The Founder of Labor Day - More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The First Labor Day - The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. A Nationwide Holiday - The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement. The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television. The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership the American worker.

8 7. Columbus Hope Report; Changes in Compass Staff Knights of Columbus Council 8980 Columbus Hope Foundation July 2017 Update The 2017 Columbus Hope Foundation drive is moving into the last few weeks. We have collected $13, to this point and I am confident that we will meet our goal. There are 6 collections remaining. The weekend of October 28th will be a two event weekend. That will stretch us thin but we will get it done. Brother John Fry started the Golden Knight program last year in order to give Brothers an opportunity to contribute to Columbus Hope Foundation monetarily. Many are unable to help at the Tootsie Roll events but still want to help. Many of us that work the events also give if they are able. Please consider a donation and make checks payable to St. Michael Council 8980 and mail it to Alan Cox, 812 Helms Way, Conway, SC Thank you all in advance for any help. Last, the Doo Wop Pasta Dinner reservations are starting to come in. The flyer has been in the Compass and church bulletin. I will have the manager of Doo Wop Forever release the notice to his groups this week so please get on board. This will be a great night out for all. May God Continue to Bless St. Michaels Council 8980 and our Special Children A change in our Compass Staff: A few months ago, we reported the passing of brother Knight Anthony Saraceni, who was a member of the Compass Newsletter production team, along with his wife Joan. We now must bid a fond farewell to Joan as she leaves our area to move back north to be near her family. Joan, you will be missed. Godspeed and good luck as you continue your life in a new direction. Joan Saraceni Peter and Joann Croffey With a few empty spaces on the team, we put out a notice for help, and we got a quick response. Answering the call is brother Knight Peter Croffey and his wife Joann. Peter jumped right in and said, We d like to help. It s things like this that explain why he was chosen Knight of the Month. Welcome to the Compass Team.

The ceremony and diner were well represented by Assembly 2107, and I would like to THANK everyone for taking the time out of their busy schedules and attending this yearly function. As summer rapidly draws to a close and the traffic problems lessen, our Sir Knights will be working to achieve all that we have planned for. There are many things that we can all become involved in, if by chance you have not volunteered for anything yet. Operation Hope is winding down and still needs volunteers for the remaining collections. The Parish picnic is coming up in October and many Knights are needed for this function. So if you have not volunteered please take time to step forward and say " I will". At our recent meeting the budget was read for the second time and accepted by the majority of Sir Knights in attendance. Again if you know of a charity that you think should be included on our list, please notify one of the officers. They will then bring that request to the officers and the charity will be looked into, before any decisions can be made. There are many, many great charities in our world but, also some that only pretend to be. This is why we look at all charities that request donations from our Assembly. We have been informed that the Quilts of Valor has chosen us to have a ceremony in We are looking for a date in February, and will notify everyone of that exact date. If you know anyone that you would like to nominate, please notify either myself or John Averella and we will give you one of the forms to be filled out. You do not have to be a combat service Veteran to be nominated. All service persons signed the same contract upon entering their branch of service, thus, all honorably discharged persons are qualified for the Quilts of Valor. One other issue that is bothering a lot of SIr Knights is the new uniform that Supreme has chosen to replace the regalia now worn by the Color Guard, Honor Guard and flag folding team. A survey run by our Corp Commander Donald Maher shows that only one of the Color Guard would possibly purchase the new uniform ($500.00). This would leave our Assembly without a Color Guard as of 6/30/2018., unless some members step forward and replace those that will no longer be in the Color Guard. Our Assembly has sent communications to Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and Tom Monihan expressing our opposition to this change, but we have not heard a reply from either persons. This situation remains fluid due to the great number of Assemblies that also oppose the new uniform. We will keep everyone informed as this moves forward. Fraternally Yours, Vivat Jesus Larry Berry There was nothing to report on this month. Look for more info on coming Honor Guard activities here next month.

10 9. Catholic Q & A; Parish Picnic Q. Can an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion distribute communion with his or her left hand? I have only ever seen a priest or minister use their right hand.? A. The reason you see ministers of communion distributing with their right hands is that most people are right-handed. Another reason could be superstition that the left hand is evil, the so-called sinister hand in Latin. In some cultures, using your left hand to do anything other than "dirty" tasks is considered an insult. However, the Church does not dictate which hand must be used to distribute communion. In some cultures societal norms might, but the Church itself does not. Q. Why are there no saints from the Old Testament? A. There is no specific answer to this question other than its simply the manner in which the traditional use of the word saint evolved. In Western Christian tradition, Old Testament persons are not referred to as saints (other than the names of angels mentioned). The word was applied to early Christians who were considered extremely holy and never evolved into being used for pre-christian persons. Clearly, certain Old Testament figures are considered to be among the saints of heaven. Moses and Elijah, after all, were seen at the transfiguration of Jesus. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church notes: The patriarchs, prophets and certain other Old Testament figures have been and always will be honored as saints in all the Church's liturgical traditions (61). Eastern traditions have used word titles reserved for saints and applied them to Old Testament figures, so it is not a universal practice of the Church to avoid calling them saints. Also. the Roman Martyrology does include some Old Testament figures. Q. Why do Catholics venerate the cross on Good Friday? Isn't that idol worship? A. The underlying assumption here is that the act of veneration is an act of worship. But this is not necessarily true. The word veneration simply means to give great respect or reverence. The respect and reverence that Catholics give to sacred objects is not of the same kind of respect or reverence given to God. So now the question becomes, Is it idol worship to show respect or reverence to a crucifix? Such piety is no more idol worship than showing respect to a picture of a loved one by kissing it or putting it up on your mantle in a prominent place. Reverence shown to a material object is not foreign to the Bible. God instructed Moses to erect a bronze serpent so that whoever looked upon it would be healed from their snake bites (Num. 21:8-9). Such reverence was appropriate. But when the Israelites started showing the bronze serpent a reverence that belonged to God alone namely, worship King Hezekiah destroyed it with divine sanction (2 Kings. 18:4). The reverence that Catholics show a crucifix on Good Friday, or any other time, is a physical expression of the gratitude that we have to our blessed Lord for his death on the cross that won for us the reward of salvation. Our St. Michael Annual Parish Picnic will be held on Sunday, Oct. 1, Brother Knights that are able to help, please contact the Grand Knight. If you can help, contact Tony Carangelo at or him at tchiefengineer@aol.com. Thank you and may God Bless you.
