2 OUR GRAND KNIGHT S REPORT My Brother Knights, As fall brings a morning chill to the air, Council 8980 s activities are heating up. After a busy September where we ve been weekly collecting for The Operation Hope Foundation, showing our appreciation for monetary donations by giving out thousands of Tootsie Rolls, remember that on the inside of those tootsie roll wrappers is the story of the Knights of Columbus. Also, our Knights started back at Help 4 Kids/Backpack Buddies doing the weekly deliveries for the charity. Along with brother Knights from other District 11 councils, We helped our District to raise over $1,200 for St Elizabeth Ann Seton High School having a fundraising tailgate party at a recent CCU football game that went right down to the wire and we left happy that our Chanticleers pulled out a hard fought win. Thanks to Don Maher for running registration and collection and all our brothers and their family members who participated; it s a great way to show our solidarity in charity and support for a Catholic education with our brother councils. St. Michael s Catholic School s new principal, Pamela Walters spoke at our rosary/social this past month, she talked of her dedication to the Catholic principles through education and was complimented for having the students attend first Friday Mass. The Council was able to contribute to the school by presenting Ms. Walters with a $4000 check. A short story & photo will be found on Page 9 inside. On October 3rd and 4th we will have a membership drive at all the Masses, please wear your badge to Mass to show all the men in our parish the strong numbers we have, and continue to pray for the growth of our Council. Don t forget to get your tickets to twist the night away at the Council s 50 s dance being held on October 17th at 7pm in the Duffy Center. The registration form is on PAGE 5 of this Compass, so make sure you call and make your reservation! It s important we all participate to help support our charities. Are you a 1st degree Knight and wish to advance to full Knighthood? There will be a 2nd and 3rd degree exemplification on October 24th. All 1st dgree Knights are encouraged to contact Rick Fox at and register to take their 2nd and 3rd on the same day. Because of inclement weather that will leave our grounds soaked, our Parish Picnic has been rescheduled for Oct. 11. It was a tough call, so let Knight Mike Labak know that you support him for all his hard work. Please continue to pray for our council and all the good INDEX OF CONTENTS Announcements: Adoration, Birthdays, Good of the Order. Coming Event; The 50 s Rock n Roll Dance.... 6 6. WHY We Do What We Do; New Column - The Catholic Corner Brothers, Not that we need another reason to do what we do, but I ran past a newspaper interview by one of the great female singers that I began listening to in the late sixties and early seventies. Suzi Quatro, if you can believe it, turned sixty five this year, the London Daily Mail interviewed her on her fifty years in the music industry. One of the questions they asked her was about the greatest regret in her career, I would like to share her answer with you... At 18 Suzi become pregnant by a married music executive-she will only refer to him by his initials DC- and opted for an abortion. Over 45 years later, her eyes still mist with tears as she recalls "the hardest decision I've ever had to make." She was born and raised a Catholic in an Italian immigrant family. "And that never goes away. When my two kids were born, I couldn't get out of my mind who that first baby would have become. He or she would be 46 now. Any woman who's been through an abortion and tells you it was nothing is lying. Suzi Quatro today Of course I might well not have gone on to achieve what I did in my career if I'd become a young single Mom. But that doesn't stop it being my life's greatest regret. If I could turn the clock back, even allowing for everything that's happened to me since, I'd have kept that baby." I don't know what I can add to this story except to say, maybe if she had had an ultrasound, or a crisis pregnancy center to turn to... the what if's are endless. However if we can prevent just one mother from feeling this way about one baby, our work will have been worth all the effort we put into Knighthood. This makes handing out Tootsie Rolls, cooking spaghetti, and baking pancakes seem trivial in comparison. I would like to thank all the Knights in South Carolina for your hard work in making the world a better place for everyone! This stand down aided 134 vets in need, of whom, 47 are homeless, including 12 women. There are estimated to be over 150,000 homeless vets in America, and it s nice to have been able to help, at least, some of that number. On Thursday, September 10th our Honor Guard stood for the bishop as he celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation here at St. Michael s. We had 15 members in regalia at this ceremony. On Sept. 11th, the Honor Guard participated in a 9/11 prayer service to remember those lost on that infamous date. Besides being led by our chaplain, Father Ed, a pastor from a local church did a reading, and we were addressed by a parish member who was on the job in New York City and who lost many police and fire fighter brothers that day. At the close of the service, the Honor Guard performed the Flag Folding ceremony, for which they received many accolades. Many thanks for a job well done to SK Bernie Lodrick, who stood in for SK Don Maher as Corp Commander. The Fourth Degree Exemplification will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10th at St. Andrew s in Myrtle Beach. Arrival time for candidates and Honor Guard participants is 8:30 AM, with mass at 10:00 and the exemplification to follow. Finally, there will be a 4th Degree social/dinner at Capriz Italian Feast on Columbus Day, Oct. 12th, starting at 6:00 PM. The restaurant is located at Broadway at the Beach.
