Welcome to Holy Scripture We want everyone to feel at home here in God s home. Ushers and members will be glad to answer any question. If you are unfamiliar with the order of worship, feel free to ask the person next to you for help. All of our members will be happy to assist you. Restrooms are located through the double doors east of the main foyer. Phones are located in either the pastor s or the secretary s office. We encourage family worship at Holy Scripture, so we hope you will bring your little ones into church with you. Quiet bags for preschool age children are available in the foyer. If they become restless or noisy, a cry room is available off of the foyer, or you may prefer to quiet them in the church fellowship hall where closed circuit video of the service is available. Pre-service personal prayer: O God of peace, I turn aside from an unquiet world, seeking rest for my spirit and light for my thoughts. I bring my work to be sanctified, my wounds to be healed, my sins to be forgiven, my hopes to be renewed. In you there is perfect harmony. Draw me to yourself, and silence the discords of my wasteful life. Your greatness is beyond my highest praise. Take me out of the loneliness of self, and fill me with the fullness of your peace. 3 HOSANNA! HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST. STAND THE CONGREGATION SPEAKS OR SINGS THE BOLD PRINTED LINES. M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ (+) and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. M: Dear followers of our Lord Jesus Christ; for five weeks now we have been preparing for the observance of the events of Holy Week. Our celebration begins with Jesus triumphal entry into His own city to complete His work as the Messiah. He comes to suffer, to die, and to rise from death. Come with me as we remember His entry that follows the way of the cross and culminates at the open tomb. United with Him by baptism we are buried with Him in death and enjoy new life with Him in His resurrection. M: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. C: Hosanna in the highest! All Sing: Blessed Jesus at Your Word We are gathered all to hear you. Let our hearts and souls be stirred Now to seek and love and fear you. By your teachings, sweet and holy, Drawn from earth to love you solely. M: With the Psalmist we testify our delight is in the law of the Lord, C: and on His law we meditate day and night. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that my very nature is sinful and that my thoughts, words, and actions have disregarded Your will. 5 You. I know that I deserve eternal punishment for my sins, and that You have a right to withhold Your goodness from me. But I am sincerely sorry for every way that I have sinned, and I trust in my Savior, Jesus Christ. Therefore, I humbly plead: have mercy on me, the sinner that I am. M: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. C: Hosanna in the highest! All Sing: Gracious Savior, good and kind, Light from Light, from God proceeding. Open now our heart and mind; Help us by your Spirit s pleading. Hear the cry your people raises; Hear and bless our prayers and praises. THE GOOD NEWS ON THIS PALM SUNDAY M: It pleases me to be the spokesman of that Lord Jesus, who entered Jerusalem to willingly proceed the way of Calvary s cross. By Him suffering in our place, I can speak His words of comfort and assurance: Dear friends, your sins are forgiven. You are children of the Most High. Go now and live Your lives in thankful praise to your Lord. M: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. C: Hosanna in the highest! All Sing: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Praise to You and adoration! Grant that we Your Word may trust, Confident of our salvation. While we here below must wander, Till we sing your praises yonder. PRAYER OF THE DAY: M: Dear heavenly Father, as we remember how Jesus entered the Holy city before His suffering and was greeted as king by those who shouted Hosanna and spread their clothing and palm branches along His path, we humbly ask that You would accept our offering of praise and hear our prayers, as we raise our voices in honor of our triumphant King, who came to save: Jesus Christ, Your Son and our Lord. SECOND LESSON: PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11 recorded on page 1827 in the pew Bible 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 7 STAND GOSPEL: MARK 11:1-10 recorded on page 1572 in the pew Bible As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, Why are you doing this? tell him, The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly. 4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, What are you doing, untying that colt? 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, Hosanna! 8 A HOLY WEEK CREED Luther s Explanation of the 2 nd Article I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver, but with his holy, precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death. All this he did that I should be his own, and live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness, just as he has risen from death and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true.
