4 Saint Mark Parish Celebrating 100 Years A Parish Without Borders The Irish Pastoral Centre s Annual Golf Tournament will be held this year on Monday, June George Wright Golf Course, Hyde Park, Ma. This continues the twenty-two year old tradition of golf tournaments that began at Saint Mark Church in Also, at Saint Mark, the Irish Pastoral Centre was founded in 1987 in direct response to the large increase in Irish immigrants in the Greater Boston area, and so this year, they are celebrating their 30th Anniversary. The Pastoral Centre services include assistance with housing, employment, legal, immigration, pastoral care and senior and family outreach. Fr. Dan Finn is hoping he can count on your generosity as a player/and or, sponsor to support the mission of the Irish Pastoral Centre. A special prayer on Memorial Day Please hold our servicemen and women in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and your presence as they stand in the gap for our protection. We also remember the families of our troops. We ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes, and we pray your peace, provision, and strength will fill their lives. May the members of our armed forces be supplied with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM This seventh Sunday of Easter is somewhat like the proverbial calm before the storm. The Lord Jesus has ascended into heaven and Pentecost has not yet occurred. Rather than immediately taking up Jesus command to go out to all the nations, the disciples gather in the upper room with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers (Acts 1:14). There they all devote themselves to prayer. The Gospel recounts the great prayer for the disciples that Jesus offered to his Father in heaven. If the words of Jesus while he was on earth finally began to sink in for the disciples, then gathering to pray was certainly the right choice, for the second reading lets us all know that to follow Christ means to have a share in his sufferings. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION If you could somehow transport a thirdcentury Christian into your twenty-first-century Sunday Mass, once the initial shock wore off he or she would be more or less at home with the structure of the first part of the liturgy, the Word. The second part might be more difficult to comprehend. The stumbling block would be the book. We have a book, a missal that is set down on the altar with a very precisely prescribed set of words for the priest to say and the people to sing at the Eucharistic Prayer. In the early days of the church, there were no set formulas for this prayer. The ancients would have raised eyebrows at our bookishness since they preferred to let the prayers roll forth from a gifted leader of prayer. There was a basic shape to the prayer of thanksgiving, and almost general agreement that the words of Christ at the Last Supper ought to be included. By the second century, Justin Martyr wrote that the presider gives thanks at some length... and when he has finished the prayers and the thanksgiving, all the people present give their assent by saying Amen. In the world before books, people could memorize long passages of prose and poetry, and so it is easy to see how particular phrases or expressions passed from church to church.

5 Christ Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow St. Mark Wainwright Summer Program Preparations are beginning for the parish summer program in Wainwright Park. Program dates are July 10-August 18, Monday - Friday, 10am-4pm. The program serves youth ages 6-15 years old and includes recreation, enrichment, field trips, and lunch. The cost is $20 per week, per child. Registration is on a first come basis. If you would like to register a youth or contribute in any way, please contact the program at wainwrightpark@gmail.com or St. Mark Wainwright Summer Program Raffle The St. Mark Wainwright Summer Program will be selling tickets after the Masses Raffle winners will be drawn on Dorchester Day at our parish cookout. Your generous contributions benefit this parish program,. Your support is greatly appreciated. Dorchester Day Parish-Community Cookout Sunday, June 4, St. Mark Parish will host a cookout after the Dorchester Day Parade in the parish courtyard. (The parade begins at 1pm). We ask that you bring food to share. Please join us to celebrate Dorchester Day as a parish-community. Saint Mark Saint Ambrose Collaborative Youth Group The Youth Group is very excited as we are fast approaching our One Year Anniversary. This past year has been filled with prayer, friendship, laughter, discovery and so much more. We will celebrate at the next Youth Group meeting, May 6:00pm. The Youth Group looking forward to attending the Steubenville Youth Conference in Lowell, Ma this July. The 2017 theme is Behold, I make all things new. Revelation 21:5. For the past 40 years, high school youth from across the United States have had their faith awakened and their hearts set on a fire through a personal encounter with Jesus at a Steubenville Conference. These Youth Conferences are often life changing. If you are interested in helping offset the cost of sending our youth, see Fr. Anthony. Saint Ambrose-Saint Mark Collaborative News The Collaborative is holding a Collaborative Logo Contest, open to all parishioners. The idea is to design a logo which encompasses both parishes. This logo will be used on all Collaborative material. The lucky winner will receive $ All entries must be in by August 1, 2017 and be submitted to the Rectory. This week s second collection is for Catholic Relief Services which supports emergency relief, human development, and peace initiatives in countries around the world. The funds from this Collection provide food to the hungry, services for victims of human trafficking, support to displaced refugees, and show Christ s love and respect to all people. Next week s second collection supports the formation and training of seminarians in the Archdiocese of Boston for future service as priests. We are blessed that many are responding to the call to serve as priests. Please be generous and support these seminarians on their journey toward their ordination to the priesthood.
