2 Page 2 From the Desk of Father Raaser ABUNDANT BLESSINGS ON OUR 90 FIRST COMMUNICANTS. May they grow in appreciation of and participation in Adoration and Eucharistic devotion. We begin the month of June with the beautiful Feast of, in which we contemplate the Eucharist, which makes Christ s eternal self-sacrifice to the Father present in space and time. At Mass, we are present once again at the hill of Calvary. Pope Urban IV instituted the feast universally in the Latin-rite Church in The feast is associated with a Eucharistic miracle that occurred in Bolsena, Italy, in 1263, during which a priest who was questioning the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist saw a consecrated host begin bleeding from an altar cloth called a corporal. The corporal is still kept in the cathedral in Orvieto, Italy. St. Thomas Aquinas, who lived nearby, composed two celebrated hymns associated with this feast, the Pange Lingua and the O Salutaris Hostia, as well as the prayers at Mass and the Divine Office. Down in adoration falling, this great Sacrament we hail faith will tell us Christ is present, when our human senses fail. Reverence- to respect somebody or something deeply. The key word in the definition is deeply. One of the great laments of the Church in recent history is the lack of reverence when it comes to Mass and the Holy Eucharist. There is a terrible apathy and indifference among many of God s people when it comes to worshipping God. Today s feast day is a great opportunity for us to reflect on our sense of deep respect when it comes to God, His House, and the great gift of the Eucharist. We begin with what we wear. Image governs attitude, our attire can be an indication of our attitude toward something. Too casual a form of dress or even an unkempt look reveals that the Mass is not a special occasion but possibly something we just have to do. Our time for arrival for Mass and when we leave is an expression of our reverence. Arriving whenever we get there and leaving immediately after communion is like telling God we have a minimum of time for Him! We have to fit you in our busy schedule. As we enter the Church, there are certain actions, which we perform to remind us of the significance of what we are doing. One of these is to sign ourselves with Holy Water from the holy water fonts, which reminds us of our Baptism and the commitment to live our faith. Likewise, when we reach our pew, do genuflect before the Blessed Sacrament, or if our knees are bad, bow? Again, these signs remind us of what we are about to do. Our reverence is also expressed in the way we participate in the Mass. To participate with all our senses and to give our full attention reveals our respect and devotion. And finally and most importantly, the reception of the Eucharist. A reminder that one must fast from all food and drink, including coffee and gum, one hour before the reception of Holy Communion, water and medicine, the exception. One must be free from all mortal or serious sin and be in communion with the Church in her teachings. Reception of Holy Communion is done more reverently on the tongue. Special permission was given to the United States to receive Holy Communion with two hands, forming a throne for God, stepping aside and immediately consuming the Host using two fingers. Please make sure your hands and your children s hands are clean. If you are carrying someone or something, and can t use two hands, then you need to receive the Lord on your tongue. We have to be very careful in not dropping the Sacred Host. Investing our hearts and souls into the Mass should be our central concern. I went to the Mass yesterday morning - the singing was amazing I actually had tears in my eyes. I came this morning to pray the rosary before coming to work. Once again, seeing all the children praying together, brought tears to my eyes. If anyone is ever on the fence about sending their children to St. Margaret's, all they have to do is attend an "event" such as the two that I had the privilege to be at over the past 24 hours. Mass Cards can be given or sent for: -the repose of the soul of a deceased person or -for a Special Intention: -Special Intention Cards are for a living person and are obtained for a number of reasons: general good wishes, birthdays, anniversaries, return to good health, in thanksgiving, or for a particular need or moment in the life of another, e.g. a new home. There are two types of Mass Cards: -An Announced Mass means that the Mass will be celebrated on a certain day at a scheduled Mass time when the priest announces the intention to the congregation and it is printed in the weekly parish bulletin. -An Unannounced Mass refers to a Mass when the intention is remembered by one of the priests at a Mass that has no announced intention. Mass cards may be obtained at the Parish Center during regular office hours (9 AM 4:30 PM, Mon. - Fri.). The donation for an Announced Mass is $ 15; $ 10 for an Unannounced Mass
