2 Page 2 Nov. 4, 2018 From the Desk of Father Raaser As we saw last week, the Mass originally had two separate and independent services; the word and the meal. By the early 6th century the two were put together. At first there were three readings usually from the prophets, the apostles and the gospel. Originally Rome had this arrangement that was returned with Vatican II. As the liturgical year developed, the Books of the Bible were arranged during the year. Today, the readings are arranged in a three-year cycle. During the weekday, there is a two-year cycle. The first reading from the Old Testament prepares us for the Gospel. The Second reading or the Epistle comes from the letters of the Apostles. Continuing the practice of the Jewish synagogue, Christians traditionally respond to the Scriptural reading by singing a psalm. The responsorial psalm is our response to God s word. From the earliest times the primacy of the Gospel has been emphasized by special signs of respect and honor surrounding its proclamation. Only a priest or deacon may proclaim the Gospel. The singing of the Alleluia, coming from the Hebrew word Hallel El meaning praise God, incense, lighted candles, standing, and during the Middle Ages, the making of small signs of the cross on the book, forehead, mouth and heart reflect the respect and prayers preparing us to hear the life and the words of the Lord. The priest prays quietly before he proclaims the Gospel, Cleanse my heart and my lips, Almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel. And at the end of the Gospel, the priest, as he kisses the Gospel prays silently, Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped away. In the synagogue service after the readings from the Law and the Prophets there was an explanation given by one of those present. As early as 150 AD, there is written testimony that the bishop instructed and exhorted the people to imitate what they just heard. Numerous homilies from the early bishops have come down to us today. The homilies would last anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. The bishop would sit and read while the people had to stand; imagine that! The creed is the summary of our faith expressed by the Councils of Nicea (AD 325) and Constantinople (AD 381) as ratified by the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451). It entered the Mass through Spain in the 6th century. Originally it occurred before the Our Father and Communion. We have to thank Ireland for moving it to where it is now in the Mass, concluding the Liturgy of the Word. The Universal Prayer again brings us back to the synagogue service. There was a series of 18 blessings containing requests for individual and universal needs. The ancient form is still used at the Good Friday Service. We used to call them the prayer of the faithful. Coming from the fact that those who haven t been baptized left before these prayers were offered, only the faithful could hear or offer them. The Lord s Prayer is more accurately the prayer of the faithful ones. Next week, we will begin looking at the second part of the Mass: Liturgy of the Eucharist.
