3 INFANT BAPTISMS Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 2, 2018 The Sacrament is celebrated on Sunday at 1:15 PM. by appointment only. A Pre-Baptism Catechetical Session is required for parents. Godparents (Sponsors) must be practicing Catholics and at least 14 years of age. A practicing non-catholic Christian may act as a witness along with a Catholic Sponsor. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS We welcome all unbaptized individuals, friends, family members and neighbors who are not Roman Catholic Christians or those individuals within the Catholic Tradition who may have never received the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist or Confirmation to participate in our parish program for adult Christian Initiation at this time. This program is also ideal for baptized Christians of other Christian denominations who are interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. If you know of someone who may wish to experience the richness of our Catholic Faith and who desires to participate fully in the sacramental life of the Church, please contact Barbara Bunag at MATRIMONY The Sacrament of Matrimony requires an extensive period of preparation. Contact must be made with Parish Center one year in advance. MINISTRY TO THE SICK The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and the anointing of the sick is available to our parish sick and shut-ins upon request. Please inform the parish concerning the needs of the sick by calling the Parish Office. If any member of the parish is hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office immediately so that a member of the Pastoral Staff may visit. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE MEMBERS OF OUR PARISH FAMILY WHO ARE SICK AS WELL AS THOSE MEMBERS WHO ARE SERVING IN THE ARMED FORCES Dear Brothers and Sisters, The following is the text of my homily from last Sunday, August 26, 2018: Lord, to Whom shall we go, for you alone have the words of eternal life! During the past few weeks, we have been reflecting on the understanding of the Eucharist from the Gospel of John. The gift of the Eucharist feeds the Church, the People of God, on our journey through this world. In today s Gospel passage, many disciples walked from Jesus, because they could not accept that Jesus is the Bread of Life. Our Lord asked the Apostles if they also wanted to leave Him. Simon Peter responded, Lord, to whom shall we go? You alone have the words of eternal life. Though Peter did not fully understand all that the Lord had said, he clung to the Lord and did not turn away. How shall we make a return to the Lord for all the good that he has done for us? For our families? For our community? In the face of so much evil and scandal, how to remain a faithful Catholic and not turn away from the practice of the faith? Our faith has been shaken and we ask the Lord, To whom shall we go? In the opening prayer for the feast of Saint Bartholomew which we celebrated this past week, the Church praises Bartholomew as a man without guile who wholeheartedly clung to Christ. I have found myself clinging to Christ as day after day, week after week, more stories of the sexual abuse of children have come to light. The scandal surrounding Archbishop McCarrick, the District Attorney s report from Pennsylvania, and now the seminary investigations taking place in the Archdiocese of Newark. II Brent Rebele & Karen Sendner Let all the poison out! Let all the names and stories of those who have been abused and those of the abusers come out. These endless series of events over these past months have exhausted my own ability to respond to the crisis in the Church. These crimes against children and young adults must be punished and justice must be done. Only a full disclosure on the part of the Hierarchy will allow the healing process to begin. We are not there yet. August 25th & 26th, 2018: $19, I have published the letter of Pope Francis in the bulletin and invite each of you to take a copy home and prayerfully reflect upon the Holy Father s words. Cont.
4 Pope Francis has asked the Church to respond with prayer and fasting, to take up the discipline of prayer and fasting in the face of grave evil and scandal. These past two days, I have spent time in prayer and fasting, praying for the Pope and trying to formulate my own response to the crisis. The Holy Father is presently attending the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland. The Church in Ireland has been decimated by its own sexual abuse crisis. The Churches are empty and vocations to the priesthood have dropped off precipitously. Is this our future? When I think of Dublin, I remember visiting the city just five years ago in the Springtime and walking through the Old City with my friends. We came upon what appeared to be a new building site lined with large billboards. On these billboards there were large black and white photographs of children on their First Communion Day. Beautiful, innocent faces of boys and girls in their new suits and dresses and veils. Above their heads in large black letters the words: You Have Murdered Our Souls! As I watched the Holy Father this morning celebrating Mass in Dublin I kept seeing the faces of those children, the innocent victims of clergy sexual abuse. Their suffering cries out to heaven and even though the institutional Church tried to silence them, the Lord has heard their cry and HE will give them justice. For He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. Absolute power, corrupts absolutely. This is an old adage and is certainly true of the clericalism at the center of the institution of the Church. Pope Francis has called for an end to this abuse of power by the shepherds of the Church, men who think that they are above the law and are entitled by their ordination to cover up crimes against the innocent. This culture of silence that allows the abuser to go free and murders the souls of the innocent. In his letter Pope Francis states: With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial community that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the damage done to so many lives. We showed no care for the little ones, we abandoned them. I make my own the words of the then Cardinal Ratzinger, how much filth there is in the Church, and even among those who, in the priesthood, ought to belong entirely to Christ! How much pride, how much self-complacency! Christ s betrayal by His disciples, their unworthy reception of his body and blood is certainly the greatest suffering endured by the Redeemer; it pierces his heart. We can only call on him from the depths of our hearts: Kyrie Eleison-Lord, have mercy. Lord, save us! Let us pray for the renewal of our community, for the Church of Metuchen, for all who minister in the name of Jesus.
