A Pre-Baptism Catechetical Session is required for parents. Godparents (Sponsors) must be practicing Catholics and at least 14 years of age. A practicing non-catholic Christian may act as a witness along with a Catholic Sponsor. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS We welcome all unbaptized individuals, friends, family members and neighbors who are not Roman Catholic Christians or those individuals within the Catholic Tradition who may have never received the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist or Confirmation to participate in our parish program for adult Christian Initiation at this time. This program is also ideal for baptized Christians of other Christian denominations who are interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. If you know of someone who may wish to experience the richness of our Catholic Faith and who desires to participate fully in the sacramental life of the Church, please contact Barbara Bunag at MATRIMONY The Sacrament of Matrimony requires an extensive period of preparation. Contact must be made with Parish Center one year in advance. MINISTRY TO THE SICK The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and the anointing of the sick is available to our parish sick and shut-ins upon request. Please inform the parish concerning the needs of the sick by calling the Parish Office. If any member of the parish is hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office immediately so that a member of the Pastoral Staff may visit. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Every February I read or reread a literary work on the life and presidency of Abraham Lincoln. In my years as a student at Saint Joseph Grammar School, the birthdays of President Washington(Feb. 22nd) and President Lincoln(Feb. 12th) were celebrated with great ceremony. How many of my contemporaries remember cutting out silhouettes of these two presidents in profile that adorned the classrooms and hallways of childhood. It was there that we learned a love for country and the men and women of the past who inspired the dream of the American Republic. In fifth grade, we memorized Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address, (and I can still recite them today). Lincoln at the end of the Civil War spoke these words, "With Malice toward none, with Charity for all..." The malice and anger that so divides us today must not be allowed to undermine our democracy. We must work together to heal the wounds of our society. Please read these words of Abraham Lincoln, I believe by reading and acting on them we will truly honor his memory. In Christ, Fr. We ask you do so by encouraging your parishioners to read The Catholic Spirit. Catholic Press Month is also the time that your parishioners are asked to support The Catholic Spirit with a donation. Last year they responded very generously to our appeal. We know, however, that we need you for our campaign to be successful. Please express your support for The Catholic Spirit from the pulpit even a few words will go a long way. Distributed in all parishes, the print edition of The Catholic Spirit is read by nearly 20,000 people, while countless others read the paper online. Let your parishioners know that we need their help to continue distributing the paper to our parishes as well as hospitals, nursing homes, and even prisons. This was a change due to March 1 st being Ash Wednesday, it will make it easier for our Brother Knights to attend whatever Mass they prefer without the Council meeting being on the same day.. The next Assembly meeting will be on Wednesday March 8 th at 7:30pm. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CORPORATE MASS The next Corporate Mass will be on Sunday February 19 th at 8am. I expect a significant number of Knights to be present. As you know we sit up front in the first three pews on the right. Also, as always wear your Knights Jackets. KNIGHTS USHERS NEED FOR ASH WEDNESDAY March 1 st We are still in need of Knights to usher for Ash Wednesdays Masses. Because of your generosity we delivered 66 bags of food from our Pantry to SVDP clients in January. We also want to say thank you for your dona- ons to the Souper Bowl drive, and in par cular to the St. Bartholomew Youth Group for the great job they did handling the collec on! Spirit of St. Vincent This is the me of mercy. Each day of our journey is marked by God s presence. He guides our steps with the power of the grace that the Spirit pours into our hearts to make them capable of loving. It is the me of mercy for each and all, since no one can think that he or she is cut off from God s closeness and the power of his tender love. It is the me of mercy because those who are weak and vulnerable, distant and alone, ought to feel the presence of brothers and sisters who can help them in their need. It is the me of mercy because the poor should feel that they are regarded with respect and concern by others who have overcome indifference and discovered what is essen al in life. It is the me of mercy because no sinner can ever re of asking forgiveness and all can feel the welcoming embrace of the Father. At this grass-roots level Vincen ans are engaged in person-to-person service with troubled persons and families in their immediate neighborhood. Tyler may now attend school via the VGo robot as he undergoes treatment. Please see the newsletter for a picture of Tyler and VGo! Following is a thank you from Mrs. Knurek: We are extremely grateful to belong to such an incredible community. The entire school and parish has been so caring and loving toward Tyler and our fight against cancer. Tyler enjoys hearing and reading well wishes from everyone. As parents, we cannot say how touched we are by all the love we received from all the teachers, students, and parents. We are blessed to have all of you in our lives. We were honored to have three of our students, Drew Hartong, Grace Racek, and Annika Schmidt, compete in the Woman s Club Spelling Bee. Congratulations to all three! A wonderful time was had by all at the Sweetheart Dance last Saturday evening. Thank you, Mrs. Kolomyetz, for chairing the event, and Mrs. Fernandez and the Ria Mar for catering! Mission Fair was celebrated on Tuesday, February 14. Students brought coins to play games and $1.00 or a canned good for admission. Thank you, Mrs. Iadevaia and Mrs. Bell and all our volunteers to make this event a success. All money raised benefits the missions. School is closed on February 20 in honor of Presidents Day. Our eighth grade students will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to the Holocaust Museum with the East Brunswick Jewish Center. Please note that school will also be closed on March 17. Students who qualified for National Junior Honor Society will be inducted on February 22 at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria. Any students who dressed in uniform at the Catholic Schools Week Mass or who served at the Pancake Breakfast or as tour guides may dress down on February 23. Cont. Please send in re-registration forms and note that you will receive $ off tuition if you refer a family who registers. As Bishop Checchio stated in his letter about Catholic education, The Church has constantly encouraged us to promote and support our Catholic schools. Bishop Checchio also cites Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who has referred to Catholic schools as an outstanding apostolate of hope. Every Catholic educational institution is a place to encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth. This relationship elicits a desire to grow in knowledge and understanding of Christ and his teaching. This community of faith and service is particularly evident at St. Bartholomew School in our Catholic identity, academic excellence, advanced technology, leadership and mentoring. Our group s mission is to prepare, deliver and serve dinner at the Ozanam Family Shelter on the 2 nd and 4 th Thursday of every month. I extend an invitation to any parishioner who would like to help out with this effort. New members are always welcomed and needed for this program to continue. You can participate on a monthly basis or just a few times a year. Your level of commitment is an individual choice and any help would be greatly appreciated.
