3 INFANT BAPTISMS Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, October 21, 2018 The Sacrament is celebrated on Sunday at 1:15 PM. by appointment only. A Pre-Baptism Catechetical Session is required for parents. Godparents (Sponsors) must be practicing Catholics and at least 14 years of age. A practicing non-catholic Christian may act as a witness along with a Catholic Sponsor. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS We welcome all unbaptized individuals, friends, family members and neighbors who are not Roman Catholic Christians or those individuals within the Catholic Tradition who may have never received the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist or Confirmation to participate in our parish program for adult Christian Initiation at this time. This program is also ideal for baptized Christians of other Christian denominations who are interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. If you know of someone who may wish to experience the richness of our Catholic Faith and who desires to participate fully in the sacramental life of the Church, please contact Barbara Bunag at MATRIMONY The Sacrament of Matrimony requires an extensive period of preparation. Contact must be made with Parish Center one year in advance. MINISTRY TO THE SICK The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and the anointing of the sick is available to our parish sick and shut-ins upon request. Please inform the parish concerning the needs of the sick by calling the Parish Office. If any member of the parish is hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office immediately so that a member of the Pastoral Staff may visit. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE MEMBERS OF OUR PARISH FAMILY WHO ARE SICK AS WELL AS THOSE MEMBERS WHO ARE SERVING IN THE ARMED FORCES Dear Brothers & Sisters, This past week I have been visiting Rome with a number of pilgrims from our parish. The first part of our trip was spent in Assisi, the city of peace. By walking in the footsteps of Saint Francis & St. Clare we hoped to rekindle a deeper love for Our Lord. The radical love for Jesus Christ, expressed in the lives and witness of Francis and Clare, is needed today for the renewal of the Church. On Tuesday, October 16th, our group celebrated Mass together at Saint Peter's Basilica. The Chapel reserved for our group was dedicated to the Patron Saints of Europe, Benedict, Cyril and Methodius. This Chapel was created by Saint John Paul II and is very close to the Tomb of Saint Peter. We closed the pilgrimage with a visit to the Basilica of Saint Bartholomew located on the Tiber Island near Trastevere. May the prayers of the Holy Apostle bless our parish community. This Monday, October 22st, is the first Christmas Novena Mass, marking the 9 Mondays before Christmas. After the Mass we will gather for our first Parish Listening Session to respond to the sexual abuse crisis in the Church. All parishioners are invited to attend the session and share their thoughts and concerns about this crisis. May we continue to pray for one another. In Christ, Fr. I appreciate your generosity. The Halloween Party will be held on October 26 from 6:30-8:30 pm. Please see the flyer for details and tickets. No tickets will be sold at the door. Thank you, Ms. Phillips, for chairing this fun event! The Halloween Parade will be held on October 31 beginning at 12:00 pm in the parking lot. Students may dress out-of-uniform and bring costumes to school in a bag labeled with their names. Please do not send in props that are weapons. Please see the flyer about the Trunk or Treat event. Students will take the candy home in a sealed bag, so please check the bag contents at home. Thank you for your cooperation. We will attend Mass on November 1, All Saints Day. School is closed on November 2 for teacher professional development. November 4 will be the Ariella Hopkins Pancake Breakfast after the 8:00 and 10:00 am Masses. Please join us to support this event. 5 St. Vincent DePaul Society St. Bartholomew Conference OZANAM MEAL PROGRAM The Ozanam Meal Program Committee will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018 at 7:30 pm in the Parish Center. Our group s mission is to prepare, deliver and serve dinner at the Ozanam Family Shelter on the 2 nd and 4 th Thursday of every month. In God's Image, the Catholic Faith Sharing Group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people at Sacred Heart Church, South Plainfield, meets the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 7:00PM in the Annex Building. Our next meeting is November 14. The group is open to LGBT adults, 18 and over, and their families. All are welcome for faith sharing, prayer, conversation and support. The St. Bartholomew Columbiettes would love to welcome women of the parish to join our organization this year as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. Our organization works in the community and in the church. We raise funds for those fighting cancer, for veterans, for families in need. We do this while enjoying the company of other Catholic women. 8 On Monday, October 29, 2018, the New Jersey General Assembly very likely will vote on the Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act (A1504). The bill would allow physicians to prescribe drugs to end the lives of terminally ill individuals considered to have six months to live. Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, October 21, 2018 The facts are clear - in California, in Vermont and in Oregon - states that have passed assisted suicide bills - insurance companies have denied individuals expensive healthcare coverage but offered them low cost drugs to end their life. In an era of cost control and managed care, patients with lingering illnesses may be branded as a financial liability for the insurance company, and decisions to encourage death could be driven by reducing costs. Please contact your state legislators and tell them that you oppose A1504. Parker in Highland Park. The group will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 3 pm. There is no cost for the program but registration is required.
