3 INFANT BAPTISMS The Sacrament is celebrated on Sunday at 1:15 PM. by appointment only. A Pre-Baptism Catechetical Session is required for parents. Godparents (Sponsors) must be practicing Catholics and at least 14 years of age. A practicing non-catholic Christian may act as a witness along with a Catholic Sponsor. Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, February 11, 2018 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS We welcome all unbaptized individuals, friends, family members and neighbors who are not Roman Catholic Christians or those individuals within the Catholic Tradition who may have never received the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist or Confirmation to participate in our parish program for adult Christian Initiation at this time. This program is also ideal for baptized Christians of other Christian denominations who are interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. If you know of someone who may wish to experience the richness of our Catholic Faith and who desires to participate fully in the sacramental life of the Church, please contact Barbara Bunag at MATRIMONY The Sacrament of Matrimony requires an extensive period of preparation. Contact must be made with Parish Center one year in advance. MINISTRY TO THE SICK The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and the anointing of the sick is available to our parish sick and shut-ins upon request. Please inform the parish concerning the needs of the sick by calling the Parish Office. If any member of the parish is hospitalized, please notify the Parish Office immediately so that a member of the Pastoral Staff may visit. PLEASE PRAY FOR THE MEMBERS OF OUR PARISH FAMILY WHO ARE SICK AS WELL AS THOSE MEMBERS WHO ARE SERVING IN THE ARMED FORCES Dear Brothers and Sisters, As we approach the Season of Lent it is a good time to prepare our homes and our families for this sacred time of retreat. During these weeks of Lent I will be sharing with you some insights from the book, Praying Lent by Fr. Andy Alexander, SJ. and Maureen McCann Waldron. Imagine that this Lent is going to be different from every other Lent. Think about the many graces that our offered us during these forty days. In these days before Lent we need to prepare our hearts and our homes to receive the blessings of this holy season. Before Ash Wednesday, we should start to ask ourselves some questions and begin making some preparations. Ask yourself, What does God want to give me this year? What will free me to be more open and more loving this year? Our focus should not be so much on giving something up, as being open to receive the grace of our Lenten journey together. Prayer, Fasting, Charity are still the essential components of a disciplined Lent and they should be practiced each day. Special emphasis is given to the Fridays of Lent in order to unite ourselves to the sacrifice of Christ Crucified. Lent is a season of being invited by God in a deeply personal way. Come back to me, with all your heart., says the Lord. Preparing our home for Lent: On a table place the following items: A Crucifix: symbol of Christ s sacrificial love Water: a small bowl of holy water to remind us of our baptism Sand: a dish/bowl of sand to remember our journey is through the desert. Jesus fasted and prayed in the desert for 40 days and nights. A Candle: Light a candle and place it near the crucifix and say together: Lord, thank you for the gift of your Light, in the midst of darkness. May this candle be a sign of your presence among us. A Bible: An open bible should be placed on the table. Remember that the Word of God is active and effective in our lives. Maybe choose a particular Gospel Story or Psalm to read together each day. As Catholics, we go to God together: By strengthening our bonds of prayer and charity we will all come to the glory of the Eternal Easter, Eternal life with God. 4 February 10, 2018 St. Bartholomew School 470 Ryders Lane East Brunswick, NJ Tel Fax Dear Parents and Guardians and Parishioners, What a beautiful celebration of our outstanding Catholic school we enjoyed as a school family during Catholic Schools Week! The Mass with the beautiful procession of banners and Offertory procession depicting the history of our school began the week. The Pancake Breakfast and Open House that followed were huge successes as we welcomed many new families to our school family. Our students enjoyed participating in the Olympics with the carrying of the Olympic torch carried in the Atlanta Olympics, on loan from Mr. Newcomb. School Spirit Day and the traditional volleyball game were held in our beautiful, newly renovated gym. You can see pictures of the gym on our website and Facebook page as we celebrated National School Choice Week with our entire student body participating in the flash mob. On Wednesday, Mayor Cohen visited our school and answered students questions about governing and our township. Students shared their knowledge at the Literacy Fair with unique celebrations of literacy. Students attended a wonderful assembly on the science of sound, Bach 2 Rock. Our student mentors traveled to the NJ State House to perform the National School Choice Week dance in front of the assembly. Additionally, a poster, recognizing our wonderful school and created by Sofia Gatti, won an award and was on display at the State House. Our week concluded with Candlemas at a candlelit Mass, another successful Open House, and Family Bingo, sponsored by our Home School Association. Thank you to our outstanding faculty, staff, students, HSA, and volunteers for all their assistance this week. On Monday, we were blessed to be able to participate in a Skype session with Colonel Mark Vande Hei at the International Space Station. Students interacted with Colonel Vande Hei, who is leaving the St. Bartholomew Commemorative Coin at the space station. This was an incredible opportunity for our students and staff. Congratulations to Marcus Justiniani, Alani Boomer, and Daniel Novoselov, who were chosen to participate in the Woman s Federation Spelling Bee on February 11! The Gertrude Hawk Easter Candy Sale began on February 5. Thank you for your support. Kindergarten Conferences were held this week. The Sweetheart Dance will be held on February 10. Pre-K 4 will host a Valentine s Day event on February 12. Our Mission Fair will be on February 13. We will attend Mass on Ash Wednesday, February 14. Please see our Activity Calendar for after school offerings. I am looking forward to starting a Book Club for our students on the upper floor. Look for a flyer coming soon! St. Vincent DePaul Society St. Bartholomew Conference The monthly St. Vincent depaul Society food drive will be held next weekend, February 17th & 18th. The pantry is in need of the following items: Paper Towels, Bath Tissue, Bar Soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, plastic bags (sandwich size), Tuna fish, canned pasta, Ragu, Mac&Cheese, coffee, Reg. Tea, cold cereal (NO CHEERIOS), Fruit juice Apple bottles and lunch packs and cookies Thank you for your generosity. In God's Image, the Catholic Faith Sharing Group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people at Sacred Heart Church, South Plainfield, will be cohosting a Lenten retreat at San Alfonso Retreat House in Long Branch on March 18 from 1:30-6pm. Holy Mass will be offered as part of the afternoon of reflection. Through more than 100 programs, Catholic Charities serves those most in need of our assistance. If you have yet to make your pledge to this year s Bishop s Annual Appeal, you will have the opportunity to do so the weekend, February 24/25, which has been designated as Bishop s Annual Appeal In-Pew Weekend. The application process is online through FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment. Bishop James Checchio will preside at the celebration of The Sacrament of Confirmation May 30, :00 p.m. St. Bartholomew Parish St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church To Sponsor Slavic Dinner Wednesday, February 14, 2018 St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church will sponsor the Slavic Dinner on Wednesday, February 14, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The dinner will be held in the St. Mary Parish Center, 1900 Brooks Boulevard, Hillsborough, NJ. The cost is $18.00 for adults (ages 9 and up) and $5.00 for Children (8 and under) and includes all you can eat Pirohi, Stuffed Cabbage, Kielbasa and Sauerkraut, Mashed Potatoes, salad, dessert and beverage. Each month a special entrée will be specially selected and prepared by St. Mary s chef John Pagano. Dinners are held on the second Wednesday of every month throughout the year.
