1 St. Luke Parish R I V E R F O R E S T I L L I N O I S Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009 we watched through the night as we were taught lighted a new candle blessed water for the font told stories around our little fire remembering creation and covenant love and rescue sang gloria and alleluia with full voice and trumpet but our rejoicing holds just a hint of desperation beneath the alleluias a deep unease a hunger for familiar words of vindication that prove our hopes are not misplaced our Lent not wasted our faith not foolish (in a time of lies and betrayal inglorious way marchers in the street flowers are not quite blooming among the hidden Easter eggs) this year we realize that an empty tomb still leaves unanswered questions faith stretched to breaking point yet once again he joins us in the breaking of bread in the blessing of peace and peace is (in spite of everything) our greatest joy this year E.M.Jeep

Divine Mercy Sunday Pope John Paul II designated the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. This year it is April 19. In a decree dated August 3, 2002, the Apostolic Penitentiary announced that in order to ensure that the faithful would observe this day (Divine Mercy Sunday) with intense devotion, the Supreme Pontiff himself established that this Sunday be enriched by a plenary indulgence... so that the faithful might receive in great abundance the gift of the consolation of the Holy Spirit. In this way, they can foster a growing love for God and for their neighbor, and after they have obtained God s pardon, they in turn might be persuaded to show a prompt pardon to their brothers and sisters. The plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and The Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!). On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 19, from 3:00-4:00 PM, we will have a Holy Hour consisting of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, recitation of the rosary and the Divine Mercy chaplet, and Benediction. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be available during this Holy Hour. Everyone is invited to join in this special prayer and devotion. 4

6 Gatherings from the Parish and the Community A New Envelope Debuts In your April-May packet of Sunday envelopes you ll find a new addition a monthly envelope for Maintenance and Building Improvements. Due to unforeseen expenses during recent months, such as a frozen water pipe ($6,700) and many extra snow removal days, the Parish Finance Committee has recommended to Fr. Ken that this envelope be added. We appreciate your understanding of this need, as well as your generous response. Worth Seeing/Hearing The Siena Center of Dominican University will present Tending Our Garden, Thursday, April 16, 7:30 PM. Michael Howard will help us connect sustainability to our own backyard, our families, and our faith. How can we better mentor our children and serve our communities? What can we learn from our communities leaders, organizations and neighborhoods as we do our part? Howard is a nationally recognized visionary who directs Eden Place, an educationally - oriented park and nature center he built with the help of his community from an illegal dump site in the heart of Southside Chicago. His story is told in Eden Place: From Brownfield to Nature Preserve and in Eden s Lost and Found, part of the PBS series Chicago: City of Big Shoulders with Scott Simon. The event will be held at Dominican University s Priory Campus Auditorium, 7200 Division Street, River Forest. Admission is $10. For tickets, call or go to For more information, call the Siena Center at Beginning of Life Issues Struggling with infertility? Consider Naprotechnology. On March 28, members of the St. Luke Respect Life Committee attended a major conference on Bioethics and Infertility focusing on the Dignity of the Human Person, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Chicago s Respect Life Office and Office for Evangelization. Keynote speaker, Dr. Thomas Hilgers, is on staff at Creighton University Medical Center and was founder of the Pope Paul VI Institute for the study of human reproduction. Naprotechnology assists infertile couples by cooperating with the natural procreative mechanisms of a woman s body, treating the root causes blocking fertility and allowing the body to heal itself. Naprotechnology has a three times greater success rate than in vitro fertilization and other artificial reproductive technologies. If you would like more information, please pick up the brochures on Naprotechnology and the Pope Paul VI Center in the racks in the Lake Street vestibule. 6 Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass The annual Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, August 30, at 3:00 PM at St. John Brebeuf Church in Niles.
