1 Minutes of Meeting held on February 20, 2013 Meeting was held at the Msgr. Kern Center (Gym) Saint Angela Merici Parish, Metairie, LA 70002, and hosted by Bishop L. Abel Caillouet Council Rosary was started at 7:45 PM The Warden checked all for their membership/travel card. Meeting was opened, with a prayer, by Metro President Donald Winchester at 8:05 PM. Thanks for the large turnout. President Winchester introduced Father Steven V. Bruno, Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Father Bruno spoke about Calling all 5 th Graders which is an annual event. This project was based on several studies that showed that most priests and religious first thought about their vocation at about age eleven. The Archdiocese of New Orleans will sponsor the Calling All Fifth Graders event, Wednesday, May 1, 2013 from 8:45 AM 1:30 PM at Mount Carmel Academy, New Orleans. We anticipate that 1000 children will attend. The students will have time for prayer, fun, food and learning about church vocations. Priests and religious communities with a presence in the Archdioceses will be invited to participate. Archbishop Aymond will also be with us part of the day. We are asking for any monetary assistance that would help with expenses for the day and to provide drinks for the students and bag lunches (50) for the speakers and volunteers. Donations can be made to: Archdiocese of New Orleans Vocation Office, 7887 Walmsley Avenue, New Orleans, LA I would like to thank you for your long-standing support in fostering vocations. On another note, I would like to talk about Camp Abbey. On August 3 rd, 4 th & 5 th 2013 we have invited 5 th, 6 th & 7 th grade students to spend time at Camp Abbey. 2 approximately 150 people including students and adults. What we would like it to have the Knights and other groups cook meals for the three days. There will be a total of six meals. This would be done on the Camp Abbey grounds. There is a commercial kitchen. However, you could bring your propane tanks and cook, for example, jambalaya or gumbo or anything you think the group would enjoy. Two more dates to remember is March 9 th. That is Abbey Youth Fest. May 18 th is the ordination of the deacons. Thank you for inviting me to talk to you. President Winchester asked those here tonight to bring back the above information to their Councils. MINUTES: A motion was made by Brother Dennis Cass and seconded by Brother Tony Grego that the minutes of the last meeting be accepted as published. Brother Jerry Tarantino, DD said he had not seen the minutes. President Winchester gave him his copy. After Brother Tarantino received the copy and looked over same, a motion to approve the minutes was made by voice vote. TREASURER S REPORT: Financial Report for the month of January Balances on 01/31/2013: General Fund $537.84; Restricted Fund $4, Total checking Account Balance $4, Income for the Month of January $ Total expenses (Nuns Build) $ Tonight we collected dues from one Council. A total of 16 Councils have paid. Please ask your Council to include in their budget funds to go to the Nuns Build. Any amount would be appreciated. Motion to accept treasurer s report made by Brother Justin LaGrange and seconded by Brother Dennis Cass. Motion passed by voice vote. BILLS & COMMUNICATIONS: SEMINARIAN REPORT: DUES: Please ask your Council to pay their dues in a timely matter. If your Council has not paid their dues please bring your Council s check, in the amount of $25.00, made out to KC NEW ORLEANS METROPOLITAN CHAPTER, to the next meeting on Wednesday, February 20, You may also mail your dues to: KC METRO CHAPTER, 314 ST. CHARLES AVENUE, NEW ORLEANS, LA METRO CHAPTER NEEDS NEW MEMBERS. Chapter also needs more participation in meetings and events. Applications for membership in the Metro Chapter are available from Brother David Grego. Please contact Brother David at: drgrego@bellsouth.net Talk up membership at your Councils and bring along a member of your Council who may not have attended a Chapter meeting in the past. 3 COMMITTEE REPORTS: INSURANCE: Field Agent, Brother Gary Knoepfler, spoke about life insurance in general and specifically annuities. Today annuities are paying 2.25% and will never go below 1.5%. Brother Terry Kennedy, General Agent, retired at the end of last year. There is now a new General Agent. His name is Eric Ottemann. Right now he is working out of Terry s Slidell office. Same phone number. Knights of Columbus Insurance is looking for Catholic gentlemen who may be interested in becoming field agents. If interested they can contact Eric at MEMBERSHIP: Brother Paul Gagnet spoke on the need for all to recruit and the $9.00 per new member that Councils will be credited with on July 1 st, He said that membership is down. The net net number for the State is minus 300 members. Don t forget to ask the men in your parish to join the Knights. Have an open house and invite families. Check men s club in the parish to see if anyone may be interested in joining the Knights. KC LICENSE PLATES: Brother Dennis Cass is the State Chairman for the KC License Plates. He has forms to purchase these plates. Once you have your 3 rd Degree you can go for your 4 th Degree. LOUISIANA KC WEBSITE COUNCIL REPORTS: Those Councils Present at Tonight s Meeting. Council 1437 Marquette (New Orleans): Thursday, February 21 st, a first degree will be held at the Council Hall. Be there for 7:00 PM. Friday, March 15 th, Trivia Night. Doors open at 6:00 PM, questions will begin at 7:00 PM. This event is not limited to Marquette members. Bring family and friends. Teams are limited to four members, but you don t need to come with four people. Teams are formed before Trivia starts. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team. For the second year in a row, Marquette Council is collection Mardi Gras beads and donating them to St. Michael s school. If you have any beads that you would like to get rid of please give them to Marquette so they can get them packed up and sent to St. Michael s. Marquette made a $ donation to Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Atlantic City, New Jersey to help in their Hurricane Sandy relief. This is our way of thanking those people who came to New Orleans to help out during Hurricane Katrina. Council 2878 Fr. Seelos (Metairie): On Friday, February 22 nd and Friday, March 22 nd a fish fry, shrimp & crawfish dinner will start at 5:00 PM. Pizza as well as drinks and desserts will also be available. Dine in or take out. Free throw contest will take place this weekend at Delta Playground. Council 3246 E. D. White (Metairie): E. D. White Council will host the Running of the Silver Rose this fall at St. Clement of Rome Church. Council 4663 Ludovicum (Saint Louis King of France Parish, Metairie): In October 2013 Norwegian 7 day Cruise out of Quebec City. Prices start at $ February 9 th & 23 rd, March 9 th Pro-Life February 16 th Bonco, February 20 th Feed the people (fed 170), February 22 nd, March 1 st,8 th, 15 th Lenten seafood dinners. February 22 nd & March 15 th will be fish dinner. March 1 st shrimp creole, March 8 th crawfish etouffee, March 27 th KC social, March 9 th Bonco, March 10 th Quarterly Communion. 5 District 1 will resume 1 st Degrees on the 3 rd Thursday of the month (except March), at Rummel Council Council 6870 Christ the King (Terrytown): On March 1 st & 8 th from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM in the Church Hall there will be a fish fry. Fried fish plate $7.00; shrimp and grits plate $7.00; combo plate $8.00 Council 8546 Msgr. Bezou (Saint Francis Xavier Parish, Metairie): Fish Fry on February 22 nd, March 8 th and March 22 nd. St. Joseph s altar will be open on Sunday, March 17 th, Monday, March 18 th and on Tuesday, March 19 th at St. Francis Xavier. Knights and their wives went to the Stations of the Cross as a group. Council 9007 Bishop Caillouet (Saint Angela Merici Parish, Metairie): Hosted tonight s meeting of the Metro Chapter. Fish Fry on Friday, February 22 nd and Friday, March 15 th. On Saturday, April 20 th the parish will host the 3 rd Annual Great Gumbalaya Cook-off and Silent Auction. The hours are 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM. On Sunday, April 21 st at the 8:00 AM Mass the Council will have their Corporate Communion. Council 9347 Our Lady of Divine Providence (West Metairie & North Starrett, Metairie): Fish Fry during Lent every Friday (February 15 th thru March 28 th ) from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Drive-thru only. $8.00 per plate. (Includes fish, bread, corn & potatoes). Guste, Sr. (Kenner) Assembly 2093 Bishop Greco (Metairie) Assembly 2921 Saint Maria Goretti (New Orleans) NEWS FROM SUPREME Just came down from Supreme that Councils will receive $9.00 for every new member that is recruited from January 1, 2013 thru June 30, A $9.00 credit will be given to the Councils beginning July 1, 2013 to be used anyway they wish.
