SATURDAY EVENING MASS: 5:00pm SUNDAY MASSES: 8:30 & 11:00am HOLY DAY MASSES: As announced in bulletin WEEKDAY MASS: Are in the Church at the times announced BAPTISMS: Parents are expected to be practicing Catholics, and registered in the parish. Baptisms are celebrated at the times scheduled. MARRIAGE: Marriages should be arranged at least 6 months in advance. If either party is under 19 years of age, Diocesan policy requires special instruction and a date cannot be given until the instructions have been completed and the Chancery Office has granted permission. CHURCH ARRANGEMENTS ARE TO BE MADE FIRST. Hall and other social arrangements are to be made after the Church date has been set. Weddings are not performed on Sundays. FUNERALS: Arrangements for a funeral must be made with the Parish office by the Funeral Director before publication of notice in the newspaper and the time or date is set for the Funeral. SICK CALLS: Call the Parish Office at any time. If there is anyone at home who cannot get to Mass or the Sacraments because of illness or advanced age, please let Father know. You can reach him on his cell at 630/ Family members may request to take communion to other members confined at home. HOSPITAL CALLS: If you or one of your Catholic neighbors is entering the hospital, please let us know. Time and distance permitting we will do our best to visit you. SACRAMENTAL RECONCILIATION: Confession is available at any time upon request, and at times announced in the bulletin. NEW PARISHIONERS: Our heart is big enough for all. Our parish accepts those who wish to be enriched with the Good News of Jesus. Go where you are fed. If you wish to have your spirit fed at St. Luke's, we ask that you commit yourself to our community. This means that every parishioner with an income is invited to use a Sunday envelope, since we expect to meet our needs from our Parish Collection at the Offertory of the Mass. Danilo Soriano Pastor Religious Education Tel: 630/ Parish Office Tel: 630/ Parish Office Website: TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient Rome, the beautiful month of May was dedicated to the goddess Flora, the patroness of flowers and new life. May 1 was considered the beginning of abundant growth, and a day for public festivals aimed at expelling winter. Even after Christianity took hold, the customs of the pagan feast lingered behind. Long ago, there was a thirty-day devotion to Mary, sometimes called Lady Month, which began on August 15. By the eighteenth century, the custom of assigning devotions to months of the year was developing. June, for example, was the month of the Sacred Heart, and October was for the Holy Rosary. Beginning with the Jesuit Order in Rome and spreading throughout the world, May has been celebrated as the month of Mary, the Blessed Mother, for more than two hundred years. That was a welcome remedy to some enduring pagan practices, such as maypole dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. Some historians say that in ancient times the May Queen was actually a human sacrifice. Devoting May to Mary is undoubtedly a better thing to do. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. LOVE ONE ANOTHER In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to love one another as I love you (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday s selection from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God s love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer shows partiality to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God s love extends to all people, and so should ours. Copyright J. 5 CCW CASH CARD PROGRAM UPDATE: Summer is around the corner at last! When filling out this month s cash card order form, keep in mind that this will be your opportunity to shop for graduation party needs, Father s Day, Memorial Day picnics and other warm weather events. The participating merchants continue to give us a rebate every time one of their CCW cards are used. So, as you run errands and shop, your efforts cause a donation to come to St. Luke s. This is painless for our own donation budgets! You will pick up your order on May 19th and 20th. Please note that there will be card sales without pre-orders on June 9th and June 10th. WELCOME VETERANS Carol Stream VFW Post now meets at St. Luke Parish on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm. Eligible Veterans please join us and help us help Vets in the local areas. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL TRUCK IN OUR PARKING LOT The St. Vincent de Paul truck will be in our parking lot the weekend of May 19th and May 20th for our Clothing Drive!! We will accept. Clothing, shoes, linens and books in good or bad condition. Unusable clothing, shoes, linens and even books generate income for the needy because they are sold for rags or in bulk. No baby equipment such as cribs, walkers, strollers, playpens, etc. ALL BABY CLOTHES ACCEPTED! BOOSTERS AND BASEBALL Join the Boosters for a baseball game on Friday, June 1st at 6:30 at the Schaumburg Boomers Stadium. Bring the whole family. There will be fireworks after the game. Tickets will be sold after all Masses May 5/6, 12/13 & 19/20. They are $11each. Don t miss out! Looney Tunes Night! Your donations go to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shops where much of your donations are given away free to needy families in the community. Some are sold at reasonable prices at the thrift shops so that needy families can shop with dignity. Proceeds from the thrift shops go into a general assistance fund where St. Vincent de Paul Conferences at the churches help families with rent, mortgage or utility assistance. 6 ANNUAL DIOCESAN ROS-A-REE SCOUT RETREAT Attention ALL Scouts Male and Female. The Annual Diocesan Ros-a-Ree Scout Retreat/Campout for this year will be held starting on Friday, August 10 th, at 5:00pm until Sunday, August 12 th at 12:00pm. It will be held on the grounds of St. Mary s church in Plano (901 N Center St). This retreat satisfies the retreat requirement needed for many of the Religious Recognitions. This year a special Ad Altare Dei Orientation class will be held at the Ros-a-Ree for those who pre-register for it and the class itself. The event is open to ALL Scouts (male or female) who are entering the 6 th grade or higher in the Fall. Registration beforehand is required. SACRISTANS NEEDED We are in need of more sacristans. These men and ladies are very special people, but are in need of more help. They have a very special ministry of making sure the church is set up for Mass on the weekend. There are usually two sacristans at every Mass. They arrive one hour before Mass and stay until the work is complete after Mass. The only other time you will be needed is Monday morning to set up for the following weekend. Extra time may be needed during Advent and Lent. The Sacristans truly are a team and work as a team. You would not be alone. Training will be provided. It is a very rewarding volunteer position. Please consider and pray about this ministry. Call the office for more information. A FORETASTE OF THE FEAST While teaching a group of First Communion students about the Lord s Supper, a pastor gave each child one M&M s candy at the beginning of class. Eat it! he invited, before proceeding to teach. Near the end of the session, the pastor asked the students what they d thought of the earlier treat. Good! said one. I wanted more! another admitted. I wanted a whole bag! chimed in a third. Now you understand another thing about Holy Communion, the pastor said. He drew out of his supplies a full bag of M&M s for each student. Sometimes we call Communion a foretaste of the feast to come. Indeed, he explained, God promises that one day we ll feast together with Jesus in heaven, but until then, Communion is that delicious little taste of what the feast will be like. In order for all the members of a community of faith to take their full, conscious and active part in liturgical celebrations, there needs to be someone who prepares and oversees the things of the liturgy...the sacristan is to know the meaning and purpose of the liturgy as well as the needs of the particular liturgical assembly, and to work carefully to see the liturgy s ends realized by providing the members of the assembly with the tools they need [for a meaningful, prayerful, and active celebration]. Remember UR ChURch. Without volunteers, we would be lost.
