HOLY TRINITY Lutheran Church April 1, am & 11am The Resurrection of Our Lord: EASTER DAY

Prelude Entrata Festiva (Op. 93) Flor Peeters ( ) Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. Christus vincit Christus regnat Christus imperat GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Christ overpowers, Christ reigns, Christ commands. At the conclusion of the introduction to the hymn stand and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it processes; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. Processional Hymn Jesus Christ is Risen Today Setting: David Brackley [2]

Text: Latin carol, 14th cent., sts 1-3; tr. J. Walsh, Lyra Davidica, 1708, alt.; Charles Wesley , st. 4 Music: EASTER HYMN, J. Walsh. Lyra Davidica, 1708 Please turn to face the baptismal font at the center of the church. Alleluia. Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia. Blessed be the Holy Trinity, + one God. Amen. Let us give thanks for the waters of baptism, in which we are joined to Christ s death and resurrection. Living God, our mother and the source of all life, at the very dawn of creation you birthed the cosmos. Your Spirit breathed gently on the waters, making them wellsprings of life. Blessed be God forever. Blessed be God forever. The torrential waters of the great flood brought an end to worlds of violence. Miriam sang your praises as you freed her people from slavery and drowned Pharaoh s chariots in the waters of the sea. Like a mother you carried your people through the desert, providing water in the wilderness. Blessed be God forever. Blessed be God forever. Your prophets spoke of your grace as morning dew and overflowing torrent. Your Word took human form in the water of Mary s womb. Thanksgiving for Baptism [3]

He was baptized in the waters of the Jordan. At a well, he promised an outcast woman living waters. He calmed the storms over the sea of Galilee and the wind and waves recognized his voice. Dying on a cross, water and blood flowed from his side. In them, you birthed your church. Blessed be God forever. Blessed be God forever. Living God let your Spirit now breathe gently on these waters that they may become for us a fountain of new life. May all those birthed in baptism live faithfully as your new creation, working for justice and peace in all the earth. Nurture us as your children, until the very end of time when the river of the water of life will be all in all. Praise to you, blessed and Holy Trinity, now and forever. Amen and amen. Amen and amen. Our liturgy is multi-sensory. There are many sights and sounds. We smell incense and flowers, we taste bread and wine, and we feel the droplets of baptismal water on our bodies. It is customary to make the sign of the cross as you receive the sprinkling and give thanks for the gift of baptism. (And feel free to take off your glasses) Canticle of Praise This Is The Feast [4]

The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray. (Silence) God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for he is alive and has become the Lord of life. Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ, and help us to grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. ~ be seated ~ WORD For Christians, the first day of the Lord, the beginning of God s new time, is Good Friday and Easter. At holy communion today we gather at the mountain for a feast to celebrate the end of death. Yet the mountain is our local parish sanctuary, the rich food a piece of bread, and the well-aged wine only one swallow. The biblical metaphors transform common reality with our joy in the salvation of God. Greeting Prayer of the Day First Reading Isaiah 25:6-9 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [5]

Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, Setting: James J. Chepponis (b. 1956) The assembly sings the refrain following the choir and where indicated. The choir sings the verses. English translation of the Psalm response from the Lectionary for Mass, 1969, ICEL, Inc.; Music 1994 GIA Publications, Inc. All rights reserved. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. Let the house of Israel say, God s mercy endures forever, forever. Refrain The right hand of the Lord has struck with pow r; the right hand of the Lord is exalted. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Refrain The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the Lord has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. Refrain Second Reading Acts 10:34-43 Gospel Acclamation Setting: James J. Chepponis (b. 1950) Sung first by the choir and repeated by all as indicated. The verse is sung by the choir. Throughout the eight Sundays of the fifty days of Easter from Easter Day through Pentecost, the three-year lectionary appoints readings from Acts. The idea is that the Spirit extended the power of the resurrection from the empty tomb to the whole Christian church, spreading throughout the Greco-Roman world. Thus we can think of each Sunday s reading from Acts as another telling of the resurrection. In the sermon credited to Peter in Acts 10, Luke referred to the witnesses of the resurrection who ate and drank with [Jesus] after he rose from the dead. We believers see ourselves as among these witnesses. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Copyright 1999 Birnamwood Publications, a division of MorningStar Music Publishers, Inc., St. Louis, MO. All rights reserved. Used by permission. Verse: Christ, our paschal lamb, was sacrificed. Therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. [6]

The Easter gospel as Mark tells it announces the empty tomb and promises that the women and the other disciples will see the risen Christ back at their home. When we face the grave, we need not be in terror, for with centuries of believers we continue to encounter Christ regularly wherever is our Galilee. The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Alleluia (sung as above) ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. ~ please stand ~ Please see page 14 for the Hymn of the Day. After each petition: Risen Lord, hear our prayer. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ Gospel Mark 16:1-8 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Now All The Vault of Heaven Resounds Setting: John A. Behnke Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. [7]

Offering Offertory Anthem 9am: Aleluya! Christo resucitó Nathan Zullinger (b. 1978) MEAL If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. We thank you for your generous support of the mission of Holy Trinity. We seek to do church differently through our radical welcome, and as we address racial justice, climate change, and as we take stands for the rights and dignity of all people created in the image of God. Though most of our congregation gives online, we pass the offering plate. You can also set up online donations at giving.htchicago.org. Aleluya! Christo resucitó la madrugada del domingo. (Allelujah! Christ was raised early Sunday morning.) Run, faithful women, to the graveside, marvel the stone is rolled away! Hear from the angel, He is risen. Christ goes before you all the way. Aleluya! Christo resucitó la madrugada del domingo. (Allelujah! Christ was raised early Sunday morning.) Rise, Magdalena from your weeping; Christ stands before your very eyes. Quickly return to the disciples; bear the good news: He is alive! (Text: Luis Bojos, trans. Martin A. Seltz) 11am: Risen! Risen! Deborah Govenor (b. 1954) Sung by the Holy Trinity Children s Choir Risen! Jesus Christ is risen from the grave this holy Easter Day! Risen! Jesus Christ is risen from the tomb where once his body lay. He is not here, the angel said, He rose victorious from the dead! Risen! Jesus Christ is risen on this triumphant day! Risen! Jesus Christ is risen! Sing to the Lord, with us rejoice! Risen! Jesus Christ is risen; to the savior lift your voice. For three long days in the grave he lay, the angel came and rolled the stone away. Risen! Jesus Christ is risen on this glorious day! Our Lord was crucified, for us he bled and died, But on this Eastertide our savior lives again! Risen! Jesus Christ is risen from the grave this holy Easter Day! Risen! Jesus Christ is risen, with all the angels say, Jesus is ris n today! [8]

~ please stand as you are able ~ Great Thanksgiving The thanksgiving includes the following: Dialogue It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, the true Paschal Lamb who gave himself to take away our sin; who in dying has destroyed death, and in rising has brought us to eternal life. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Preface Holy, Holy [9]

Thanksgiving at the Table This is the day that in joy and delight we join with all the angels of heaven and all the creatures on earth to sing our praise and thanksgiving to you, all holy and mighty and glorious God. Christ is risen, Alleluia. Christ is risen, Alleluia. This is the day that you gave light to the earth. This is the day that you saved the Israelites through the sea and with your pillar of fire led them to freedom. Now every night is as bright as day. Christ is risen, Alleluia. Christ is risen, Alleluia. This is the day that you broke the chains of death. This is the day that, marrying heaven to earth, you washed away sin, rescued us from evil, and brought us your peace. The Lamb who was slain has begun to reign. Christ is risen, Alleluia. Christ is risen, Alleluia. On the night before he died, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: On this day send us the power of your Holy Spirit. Revive us with the body and blood of our risen Savior. Illumine our lives with your presence, and shine your Morning Star over the whole human race. Christ is risen, Alleluia. Christ is risen, Alleluia. We bless your salvation, we sing of your mercy, and we praise your victory through all time and space, Radiant Father, victorious Son, and shining Spirit, one God, now and forever. [10]
