3 PARISH NEWS / NOTICIAS Every Tuesday we have Adoration from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm. There is an open slot from 2:00 3:00 pm. If there is anyone who can come spend 1 hour with the Lord during this time, please contact Connie Jessup at conjessup@aol.com or call We also need people who will substitute when a regular person cannot cover their hour. SMM Food Pantry The Food Pantry ministry is an important ministry at St. Mary Magdalene providing help to those in need in our area. The SMM Food Pantry operates every Wednesday morning and is one of the few pantries in the area that provides a meal in addition to providing food supplies. Each week, about twenty parishioners are involved in interviewing and registering qualified clients, preparing meals in the kitchen, and retrieving, organizing, packaging and distributing food supplies to our clients. The SMM Food Pantry purchases our food supplies from the East Texas Food Bank and typically serves clients per week at a cost of $ The Food Pantry also coordinates with the ALMS committee to provide additional assistance to clients in the form of gas cards and store gift cards, as funds allow. 4 SAINTS FOR THE WEEK Saturday, February 3, Saint Blaise, Bishop, Martyr Blaise, believed martyred in the persecution of Licinius, early 4th century; bishop of Sebaste in Armenia; associated with the healing of throats; venerated as well by the Eastern Church. Saint Ansgar, Bishop died in 865 at Bremen; O.S.B. missionary to Denmark and Sweden; bishop of Hamburg; great preacher and administrator; known as the Apostle of the North ; patron of Denmark, Germany, and Iceland. Monday, February 5, Saint Agatha, Virgin, Martyr died probably under Decius in 251 in Sicily; patroness of Palermo and Catania; invoked for protection against volcanic eruptions and fires; mentioned in the Roman Canon. Tuesday, February 6, Saint Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs Paul Miki, Jesuit scholastic, and his twenty-five companions, including two other Jesuits, six Franciscans, fifteen tertiaries, and two laymen, were crucified by order of the ruler Hideyoshi in 1597 at Nagasaki; among them the Mexican, Felipe de Jesus, first martyr from the Americas to be beautified; protomartyrs of the Far East (canonized in 1862 by Pope Pius IX). Thursday, February 8, Saint Jerome Emiliani died in 1537 of the plague; Venetian soldier whose conversion led to the founding 1534 of the Clerks Regular of Somascha (C.R.S.), today numbering about 530 members; dedicated to the poor and the education of youth; patron of orphans and abandoned children. Saint Josephine Bakhita, Virgin Josephine was born around 1869 in Sudan and raised in the Islamic faith. Kidnapped as a child by slave traders, she was given the name, Bakhita, meaning lucky one. She was sold to a number of owners until she was purchased around the age of twelve by the Italian Consul Callisto Legnani. He brought her to Italy and, while serving as a nanny, was sent to live with the Canossian Sisters in Venice. There she was formally introduced to the faith, baptized Giuseppina, and eventually granted her freedom. In 1896 she joined the Conossian Daughters of Charity, and for twenty-five years served her sisters as cook, seamstress, and portress at their houses in Venice, Verona, and Schino. She was especially beloved by her students for her sweet nature and musical voice. After a long and painful illness she died in Pope John Paul II canonized this first Sudanese saint 1 October 2000 as a witness to evangelical reconciliation and a model of freedom. 7 The Belles of St. Mary Magdalene The Belles is a Ministry at Saint Mary Magdalene Church open to ladies in the parish. We support Saint Mary Magdalene Church, various charities and provide a social fellowship for women in the parish. One of our most important projects is providing luncheons for the families of the deceased following the funeral. Social activities include holiday parties, speakers and game nights. Religion based activities include retreats, motivational speakers, and an annual communion breakfast.
