5 Our Journey of Faith Continues The focus of the Wesley Journey of Faith during October is The Sacred Word. On Sunday, October 22, we will have our second special event. Pastor Jerry and Dave Christy will lead us into greater understanding of the Bible. CHILDREN S SUNDAY SCHOOL MUSIC: The children are off to a great start this fall, learning new music to sing for the congregation as well as their parents. Please mark the date of Sunday, October 29 th on your calendar as that is the day they will sing at the 9:00 a.m. service. The annual children s Christmas program will be Sunday, December 10 at the 9:00 a.m. service, with practice Saturday, December 9 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please mark these dates December 9 and on your calendar. We will start practicing for the program on Sunday, November 5. Thank you for bringing your children to Sunday School at Wesley. Kellie Burgess WESLEY YOUTH FUND RAISING ACTIVITIES: The Wesley Youth will once again be providing Spook Insurance for the Halloween season. What is Spook Insurance, you ask? This is insurance on your yard in case you are haunted by ghouls and goblins who like to stream toilet paper or smash pumpkins or other tomfoolery that may occur. If you are visited by such ghouls or goblins, let us know, and our Youth will come clean it up for you. The cost is $ The Wesley Youth will be doing fall yard work and clean-up today from 3:00 to 5:00. This may include raking, mowing, cleaning gutters, or any other yard work you or your neighbors would like done. The cost is $25 per yard. There are sign-up sheets for both fund raising activities in the lobby. Please prayerfully consider participating in these activities. Thank you Kellie Burgess.

6 2017 Undies Sundays drive During the middle of October boxes will be available for your donations. These Sundays include: October 8, 15 and 22 United Methodist Women On Sunday, October 22, we will be celebrating United Methodist Women's Sunday by providing information about UMW, its mission projects and the people they support. UMW focuses their efforts on local and global projects that benefit women, children and youth. In addition, Special Mission Recognition and Jewel of a Woman recipients will be announced. Also, quilts made by the Wesley Quilting Group will be on display and available to purchase which will enable the group to buy supplies to make more quilts to donate to Red River Valley Community Action (RRVCA) Shelter House. Special refreshments will be served between services in the Fellowship Room. Be sure to join us! Looking Ahead Sunday, Oct. 22: We will get together in the downstairs Fellowship Hall at 5:00 for the second special event of our Journey of Faith, as we enjoy good food and fellowship and learn more about our Sacred Word, the Bible. Sunday, Oct. 29: Bishop Bruce Ough will provide an update on the work of our Commission on a Way Forward. This gathering at Fargo Calvary will begin at 3:30. Pastor Jerry invites all who plan to attend to consider joining him for conversation and supper following Bishop Ough s presentation. Let him know if you would like to participate and if you would be interested in ride sharing. 8 THE SACRED WORD The Bible was written over a 1,600 year period by approximately 40 men. The time of the writing was from 1500 BC to 100 AD. The last word in the Bible is AMEN. The Bible, the world s best-selling book, is also the world s most shoplifted book. One biblical researcher recently contended that most Bibles bought today are not read by the purchaser, intended instead to be used as gifts and then often not read by the recipient. The word God appears in every book except Esther and Song of Solomon. The word Christian appears only three times in the Bible: Acts 11:26; 26:28; and 1 Peter 4:16. There are 66 books in the Bible, 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. The numbers might be remembered by thinking of Old Testament as having 3 letters and 9 letters: 39; and New Testament as the 3 times the 9 to equal 27. The Old Testament contains 5 books of law, 12 books of history, 5 books of wisdom literature, and 17 books by or of the prophets. The New Testament contains the 4 gospels, 1 book of history, 21 letters, and 1 apocalyptic book. Canon refers to the number and order of books in the Bible. Until the invention of the printing press, and the possibility of printing all of the books in a single bound copy, individual scrolls or folios contained the text of one or more books but were not necessarily maintained in any particular order. Regional and denominational traditions often dictated a specific order that may or may not be similar to that used by others. Paul is believed to have written as many as 14 of the 27 books of the New Testament. Job is the oldest book written in the Bible it was written by an unknown Israelite around 1500 BC. James, written around 45 AD, is considered by many to be the oldest book of the New Testament. Mark was the earliest of the four gospels; John is the most recently written gospel, completed near the end of the first century (the other contender for newest book is Revelation).
