2 Page 2 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 14, 2018 From the Pastor s Desk Come, follow me Often we have heard these words, come, follow me. Even without someone requesting us to follow, consciously or unconsciously, we are being led or influenced by people to follow them. Everyone follows something: like sports personalities, film stars, musicians, popular culture, selfish desires, etc. Jesus call to follow him in many cases was with regard to his twelve disciples, but other times, he was speaking to anyone who wanted what he had to offer like in the text of today s gospel (Mark 10/17-30) sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come follow me. The disciples who responded to the call of Jesus had to leave everything behind so that they could make Jesus their priority in life. They left behind their family, friends and their comfort zone and responded to his call. So others will have to leave behind a job or dream that conflicts with God s call on their life. Everyone who follows Jesus will be changed in such a way that they must leave behind some of their former ways of life that are sinful and dishonoring to God. In other words Jesus becomes the priority and everything else is secondary. Jesus clearly made it known to the people and his followers about following him and what it means, that one should be prepared to face division in family life on account of the gospel values. His teaching will bring about a discord or division in the family. To truly follow Christ means we do not follow anything else. Jesus said whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow him. These words resounded in my ears; years back and it does still resound today. It is not enough that we respond to his call; we need to constantly position ourselves to listen for his calling. It involves a challenge of responding to his invitation, of carrying out His will in our life and denying those very things which distract us to sin. Following Jesus means striving to be like Him. He always obeyed His Father, so that's what we need to strive for to be like him. To truly follow Christ means to make Him the Boss. That's what it means to make Jesus Lord of our lives. Every decision and dream is filtered through His Word with the goal of glorifying Him in everything. We are not saved by the things we do for Christ (Ephesians 2/8-9) but by what He has done for us. Because of His grace, we want to please Him in everything. All this is accomplished as we allow the Holy Spirit to have complete control of every area of our lives. He explains the Scriptures empowers us with spiritual gifts, comforts and guides us. To follow Christ means we apply the truths we learn from His Word and live as if Jesus walked beside us in person. -Fr. FORMATION SERIES: THE MASS You re invited to view Bishop Robert Barron s The Mass on six Mondays, Oct. 22 & 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19, and 26, either at 8:30 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Room (Bishop Barron was a weekend presider here at SIJ Parish for a few years). Each session will be an hour and include watching one part of his dvd presenta on and discussing it with others who a end. Free will offerings appreciated. Invite family, friends, and neighbors, ac ve in their Catholic faith or not, to come with you. It could be a means of growth for them and/or greater par cipa on in the Mass. Walk through the Liturgy with Bishop Barron and be transformed through insights on this most privileged and in mate encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ. See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it resonates with a call from God and a response from his people, the Church, and, most importantly, how we are in mately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist. Advent/Christmas planning RESPECT LIFE MONTH: EVERY LIFE CHERISHED CHOSEN SENT In 1531, when the indigenous peoples of Mexico were subjugated and the practice of human sacrifice was still a recent memory, the Mother of God appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant native woman, now known as Our Lady of Guadalupe. She sent him with miraculous flowers in his cloak to tell the bishop to build a church where people could receive her Son and her loving, tender care. When St. Juan Diego opened the cloak before the bishop, an image of Our Lady was revealed that remains to this day. The chapel was quickly build, millions embraced Christianity, and the Church increased its protection of the indigenous peoples. By embracing the mission entrusted to him, St. Juan Diego helped bring Christ s transforming love to cultures gripped by oppression and death. 4 Page 4 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 14, 2018 ST. ISAAC JOGUES FEAST DAY WEEKEND Our Parish Feast Day weekend is next weekend, October 20-21! Everyone is invited to come and share in the celebration! We encourage you to invite former parishioners to come home and join us, as well as your families, friends, neighbors. Support this parish fundraiser and have a wonderful time of prayer, food, music, friendship and fun. You don t want to miss it! The Taste of St. Isaac Jogues is Saturday, Oct. 20. Food will be served 6:00-7:45 p.m. down in the Parish Hall (accessible by elevator or stairs). Come enjoy tastes from twelve different countries (menu below)! Tickets are 50 cents each and food, beverages, and desserts will be 1-4 tickets each. Tickets will be sold in the Holy Family Room before and after Mass, in the narthex and in the Parish Hall after Mass and all through the Taste. There will also be face painting and Split the Pot. At 7 p.m. upstairs in the Holy Family Room there will be a performance by some students of the Indian Dance Class taught by Ms. Reemlee Chowdhury. They might even teach us a step or two! A few games for the children will be in the school hallway and the music of Patty and the Melts (Lisa Hall & Family) will be from 7:30-9:30 p.m. along with dancing. We ll also continue to sell beverages, chips and desserts. There is also the chance to register for the parish if you are new or have not had time to complete this helpful task. If you would like to help that weekend, please sign up in the Holy Family Room today! We are also looking for a few people to bring a dessert (cookies, brownies, other types of bars, etc.) for the Taste of SIJ dessert table. Collect your spare change throughout this month and at the end of October return the baby bottle and your donation to the Holy Family Room. A little change makes a big difference so please support this annual project as best as you are able!
