2 Page 2 THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD May 8, 2016 The Advocate will teach those who remain everything and remind them of what Jesus revealed. ASCENSION God mounts His throne amid shouts of joy; a blare of trumpets for the Lord. -Psalm 47:6 Why do we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord? Isn t it about His leaving us? Before the reform of the liturgical calendar, the Ascension was considered the end of the Easter Season. This was dramatically symbolized when, after the Gospel was proclaimed, the Paschal Candle was extinguished. It was subsequently kept near the Baptismal Font. It was lit only for baptisms and funerals. For the casual observer, we were in the same position as the apostles when two angels questioned them: Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking up at the sky? (Acts 1:11) That moment is one of dumbfounded awe. Our human emotions make us feel left out and left behind. Are we to rejoice at the Real Absence of Christ? Of course not! The angels interrupt our gapers delay with an explanation. This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen Him going into heaven. (Acts 1:11) Our Lord s Ascension is just that. When He was lifted up and vanished from their sight, He was triumphantly received, glorified and enthroned in heaven. In his Letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul summarizes the Paschal Mystery in the light of the ascension. God raised Christ from the dead and made Him sit at the right hand of power in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion... God has put all things under the feet of Christ and has made Him the head over all things for the Church, which is the Body of Christ, the fullness of the One who fills all in all. (Ephesians 1:20-23) Christ is Lord, enthroned in heaven, the Head of the Church, with power and dominion now and for ages to come! And the wonder of it is that He is preparing a place for us! When we enter the Mystery of Christ, we become His sisters and brothers - - heirs of the Kingdom! He may have vanished from our sight, but He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. resurrection and Ascension ARE our future, our destiny! Hymnodist Charles Wesley expressed it well. Soar we now where Christ has led, Following our exalted Head; Made like him, like him we rise; Ours the cross, the grave, the skies! The Easter Season no longer ends with Ascension Day. We do not snuff out the Paschal Candle to signify a sad farewell. The Candle remains until Pentecost. It is the Descent of the Holy Spirit that really completes our celebration of Easter. It offers us a more complete vision of Christ s Mission, our identity and destiny as Christians. -Fr. Luczak The explanation is still very mysterious. In His discourse at the Last Supper at the Last Supper, Jesus had promised to send the Spirit, the Advocate, who will remain with the apostles and be in the apostles. He assures them and us: I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. (John 14:18)

You are the Mother of individuals and nations... You show us a common human history and destiny beyond our conflicts and competition. You know our sufferings and potential for joy In the struggle between good and evil, Between darkness and light, you are always a refuge - - and island of peace - - without isolating us from the responsibility of making and keeping the peace. Hear our cry. It is an appeal to your heart and the heart of Jesus. May the Holy Spirit restore what we have lost through sin and help us reform and renew our lives. May the Spirit transform us by your shining example as the Mother and Servant of God. Take under the mantle of your protection the whole human race. May each and all proclaim the greatness of God and continue the mission of your Divine Son: to establish the Kingdom in truth, justice and peace. AMEN -Fr. We are truly blessed with the community support that we receive.this past year almost 1200 individuals with special needs and abilities participated in M-NASR programs, in addition we assisted 222 individuals integrate into their home park districts. Providing opportunities for equal access to sports and other recreational activities can enhance individual s gross mother skills, social and communication skills, as well as improve overall health and well-being. We certainly see the positive impact our programs and services have on children, teens and adults with disabilities and together we will make a difference. Your donation will support our scholarship program. Last year we allocated close to $41,000 in program scholarships so children, teens and adults could participate in our year-round programs and services. As a thank you, St. Isaac Jogues Parish will be listed as a supporter on our website, in our annual report and newsletter. 4 Page 4 THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD May 8, 2016 ATTENTION YOUNG ADULTS +The Parish Young Adult Group (18+) plans to go to help at the Feed My Starving Children warehouse in Schaumburg on Saturday, August 6, 9-11 a.m. This is a great way to meet new friends, spend time with old friends, share your time and faith in service and be a witness to Jesus mercy and love! Because it is necessary to make a reservation we need to know by May 15 who will definitely come. For I was hungry and you gave me food +A Game Night for Young Adults (18+) with music and snacks will be held on Friday, July 22 nd at 7:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Bring your friends and your favorite board games and come for a night of fun! PONDERING THE MYSTERIES OF THE NEWLY INITIATED Your continued prayers for our newly baptized and initiated brothers and sisters are welcome and needed. In the eyes of the Church they are newborns who depend on our love, care, nurturing and example in living the Christian life. But they too bless us with joy in new life, with hope and a renewed trust in God who embraces us all. (St. Augustine, 4 th century) What we commemorate before Easter is what we experience in this life; what we celebrate after Easter points to something we do not yet possess. This is why we keep the first season with fasting and prayer; but now the fast is over and we devote the present season to praise. Such is the meaning of the Alleluia we sing. We are praising God now, assembled as we are here in church; but when we go our various ways again, it seems as if we cease to praise God. But provided we do not cease to live a good life, we shall always be praising God. You cease to praise God only when you swerve from justice and from what is pleasing to God. If you never turn aside from the good life, your tongue may be silent but your actions will cry aloud, and God will perceive your intentions; for as our ears hear each other s voices, so do God s ears hear our thoughts. EASTER SOUP SUPPER & PRESENTATION An Easter season Soup Supper will be held on Tuesday, May 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Fr. Julian von Duerbeck, OSB, who was here during Lent, is returning to speak about the Acts of the Apostles and the early Church at 7PM. Free will offerings appreciated. For soup planning purposes, please sign up in the Holy Family Room today or next weekend or contact the RE office 847/ or sijre2004@yahoo.com if possible. If you can come at the last minute know that you are welcome! MARIAN FESTIVAL THANK YOU Our Parish Marian Festival was beautiful and prayerful and gave witness of our gratitude to the Lord for the gift of His mother to us and to the Blessed Mother for her intercession, care and love. Thank you to all who attended, to the people who prepared the stories, led the prayers and songs, prepared the service, helped with refreshments and clean up, and to all the groups who cooperated to make this a parish celebration! Mark your calendars now for the Corpus Christi Procession which will immediately follow the Noon Mass on Sunday, May 29. Weather permitting the procession will be outside, otherwise, it will be in church and the Holy Family Room. There will be four altars and we will conclude with a light lunch. All are invited! MOTHER S DAY FLOWER SALE TODAY *Flowers are a Mother s favorite! TODAY we are selling beautiful bouquets of fresh-cut flowers after all Masses in the Holy Family Room. Choose the perfect bouquet from a variety of colors and assortments. Carnation bouquets and Spring Mixed Bouquets -- $10; Roses bouquets -- $15; Deluxe Garden Hydrangea Bouquets -- $30. Proceeds will be used to help young women facing a crisis pregnancy situation and in need of assistance. Please support this life-saving work of the Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Last year the Women s Centers provided compassionate counseling, social services referrals and material goods assistance to over 3,500 women who were facing crisis pregnancies. Since its founding in 1984 the Women s Centers have helped save more than 39,000 babies and their mothers from the tragedy of abortion.
