2 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time january 27, 2019 A Reflection Dear St. Martin Community, This Sunday s Gospel speaks of the beginning of Jesus ministry. He opened the Sacred Scroll to read God s Word, and gave his first public homily. Jesus, in his homily, presents his mission statement: He is anointed by the Spirit of the Lord. He cares for the poor and those who are looked down upon. And that the Lord is always loving, by proclaiming the year of the Lord s favor. We wonder, where did Jesus learn the Word of God? We can truly say that Jesus learned it all at home, with Mary and Joseph instructing him of God s Word. And this should also be true for us that God s Word is first learned at home. The Church always reminds parents that they are first teachers of faith first Catechists. During the past days and coming weeks, Fr. Saju and I are meeting with parents of children who will have their First Holy Communion. You can see the anticipation and the joy in the hearts of our First Holy Communicants to receive Jesus in Holy Communion. From their families, they learned their prayers, beginning with the most basic prayers of our faith, the Our Father and the Hail Mary. And we continue to remind the parents to live their Christian role as first teachers of faith as first Catechists. We pray that children draw their mission in life from God s Word so that they truly become good and holy citizens of God s kingdom here in our world today. 4 Faith Formation Corner This is the last weekend in January and we are celebrating Catholic Schools Week. For this week s Faith Formation Corner we are going to reflect on the value of both education and formation in our faith. Education and Formation are very similar, but an important distinction is that Education is often associated with the head, while Formation is associated with the heart. As we begin, I invite you to reflect on the most important moments, the Aha! moments, of your journey of faith. Do you have many of these moments or just a few very important ones? Were they in the context of formal education, informal interaction with family or friends, and/or in the silence? Formal education remains a necessary component in growing and thriving in today s world, but we often need more than what is provided at school to grow in our faith. Formation is the process of helping us to more consistently listen to the voice within our hearts, the Holy Spirit. Where do we find Formation opportunities? Formation can happen both formally and informally, but it is most fruitful in the context of a consistent faith sharing group. This faith sharing group can be your family, close friends or new friends that gather for the purpose of growing in community and their faith. As January concludes, let us each reflect on what kind of Formation we desire this year. Let us also ask Jesus for the ability to listen to the depths of our hearts. Sunday Children s Ministries Nursery The nursery is open for parents with children to use. The nursery is available from the 8:30am Mass until after the 11:30am Mass, but please let us know if you d like to use it during a different Mass. Please enjoy this wonderful space where your child can feel comfortable and you can still observe Mass streamed on the TV. Sunday Preschool Our Preschool runs most Sundays from October through April. The program is designed for children ages 3 to Kindergarten and includes: music, crafts, activities and faith lessons. We have ongoing Open Registration, so please visit to register your child.
