Page 2 The Banner Earthy Matters Sharon Youngs, Pastor It is nice to be back among the hills of East Tennessee. I didn t realize how much I had missed them all these years. And while budding trees will soon obscure the view of the valley below, I rejoice that new life is springing forth! Tis the season to clean off winter s blanket of leaves and trim back dead limbs, to prepare the Community Garden plots for planting, to spruce up flower beds, and more. Albert J. Fritsch wrote: We needn t go to distant places to find the Holy Land. It is right here, for all land is sacred on the face of the earth. In some mysterious way all land helped to soak up His blood and sweat; and nourished thus, it has burst into recreated glory. It was purchased at so high a price. And the work is not over yet; the battle goes on. And we are not merely spectators of a distant event; we are caught up in making this land holy and keeping it so for the yet unborn. That is our task and our hope on this ever-fresh Easter morn. (Appalachia: A Meditation) How might we dig deeper into those words idividually and as a congregation as we do all manner of earthy things this month? One step is to participate in our e-cycle effort here at FPC (see page 7). The Social Concerns Committee also has launched an energy audit of our facilities, something we ve not done for many years. we are caught up in making this land holy. Here s to getting our hands dirty! With a grateful heart, Sharon Three Darko Family Members To Become U.S. Citizens George Darko was a fire officer and his wife Irene a student in Ghana when he received good news: he had won a track and field scholarship to attend Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR. So he moved from Africa to the U.S. Irene and the children joined him a few years later. After George earned his degree in economics, the family moved to Mayfield, KY. Then George received a job offer to teach economics at Tusculum College in Knoxville. The Darkos were looking for a good school district for Eric, Tabitha, and Desmond, so they moved to Oak Ridge, transferring their membership in First Presbyterian Church of Mayfield to First Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge. Andre, a third grader, was born eight years ago in Oak Ridge. Desmond is in 11 th grade, and Eric works and coaches tennis in Canada. George, Irene, and their daughter Tabitha, a fourth- year architecture student in a five-year program at UTK, will travel to Chattanooga on Thursday, April 4, to take part in the Naturalization Oath Ceremony. Congratulations to the Darkos on your new U.S. citizenship! New Members (contin. from pg. 1) She enjoys watching foreign and classic films, listening to jazz singers, reading, and researching food science and nutrition. Gail King, is retired from her position as a 4H agent with the UT Agricultural Extension Service. Her interests are knitting, crocheting, quilting, and sewing. The Kings have two adult sons: Jim, an engineer with the U.S. Corps of Engineers, and John, an associate professor of chemistry at Penn State University. Phil King, Gail s husband, is retired from his career as psychological examiner with the Tennessee Department of Corrections. He enjoys reading and listening to ebooks on physics and astronomy with the aid of his computer. Dennis Perkins worked as a machinist and utility supervisor at the K-25 and Y-12 plants until he retired in Originally from Maine, he enjoyed golfing and bowling and likes watching sports on TV. He and his wife Patty have eight children and stepchildren, grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Irene, Tabitha, and George Darko to become U.S. citizens April 4.

March 2013 Page 3 Member Spotlight Leslie Cowan Leslie Cowan started out as a Presbyterian, but during the years that he and his wife lived near Houston, Texas, with their daughter, they found it more convenient to attend a Lutheran church. He was president of their local church s Council for four years. If the church pastor couldn t show up on a Sunday, Leslie s job was to get a replacement or run the service himself. He kept a sermon ready in his back pocket every Sunday. He no longer has a copy, much to Sharon s disappointment. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he is a graduate of Bradley University in Illinois, with a degree in civil engineering. He worked for Babcock & Wilcox as a service engineer and for Ebasco Services in construction of fossil power plants. He retired as construction manager for Ebasco in Texas. His interests include archaeology, birdwatching, genealogy, and geology. Leslie, a widower, moved from Florida to Oak Ridge to become closer to his daughter Elaine Mueller and his son-in-law Paul Mueller, a nuclear physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Their daughter is a graduate of William and Mary College. She has served as a Spanish interpreter and now works for a law firm in Washington, D.C. Asked what his favorite time of day is, Leslie answered, I m happy to get up in the morning. I m happy when it s time to go to bed. And I m happy any time in between. Belize Mission Team to Report on Experience They built and painted twelve tables for use in the elementary school in Armenia, a village in Belize. They saw some 140 Belizean patients, taking measurements, giving advice, and handing out medicines at two medical clinics in the villages of Armenia and St. Margaret. They built relationships in the hope of finding ways to bring clean, affordable water to Belizeans who don t have it. These were the chief accomplishments of the Belize mission team from our church. The team stayed at Jaguar Creek Mission and Conference Center and the Conch Shell Inn from March 10 through March 16. The team members were FPCOR Youth Director Hannah Norris, Anne Backus, Caleb Bost, Ashley Hadden, and Ellie Hadden-Ford (tablebuilding team); Nurse Practitioner Dale Hadden, Teresa Brittain, Mary Mullins, and Carolyn Krause (medical clinic team); and Chuck Hadden and Dan Terpstra (clean water team). On Sunday, April 14, the team will make a presentation about their experiences during the worship service. Far left Anne Backus and Caleb Bost build tables with Abraham. Just left Teresa Brittain and Elvis prepare medical supplies. 4 Page 4 The Banner Food for Thought Jim Wessel, Clerk of Session But, don t we also have idols? Don t we idolize as we turn things into little gods that get more of our attention than the attention we give to God? Religion & Science Don t miss the 10 th Jackson B. Davidson Memorial Lecture on Sunday, April 21, at 7 p.m. and the workshop presented by the Rev. Jim Miller before and after lunch from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20. Prayer As Eugene Peterson puts it so eloquently, Things happen to us and the pressure builds. The pressure never lets up. It can dry up your life juices. Let it out through prayer. Suddenly the pressure is gone. Everyone of us needs to pray when all hell breaks loose and the dam bursts, so we will be on high ground, untouched. Reading God s Word and praying restores my soul and helps me to keep God first in my life. Meagan Feaser Idols Though I have brought many pleasures into your life, not one of them is essential. Enjoy my good gifts but don t cling to them. Turn your attention to the Giver, not the gift. The one thing you absolutely need is the one thing you cannot lose: My presence with you. The above paragraph from the devotional Jesus Calling hits home. We are amused or repelled by the Israelites continuous worship of idols in the Old Testament. But, don t we also have idols? Don t we idolize as we turn things into little gods that get more of our attention than the attention we give to God? You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3 We read this verse in the Old Testament and think it does not apply to our totally different life of today. After all, God was addressing the Jewish people s problem of being continually attracted to any gods of the people they encountered as they journeyed through the wilderness. But today Christianity dominates the practice of religion in the United States and we worship only one God. Or do we? When God used the word god, God meant any distraction that assumes great importance to us. Don t we all worship a number of gods? Some people spend a lot of time watching television. Some spend a lot of time with their computers. Others spend a lot of time with their cars. Most of us place great importance on using our stuff. I m sure you can think of other little gods that we spend more time with than we do with our God. The commandment, You shall not have any other gods before me is just as fresh today as it was when Moses brought it down from Mt. Sinai. Session Highlights: Sale of Cemetery Plots Approved Property sale and committee members approved At the March 20 meeting at the church, Session voted to approve the sale of church-owned cemetery plots in the Oak Ridge Memorial Garden. That process was begun immediately. The appointment of Robin Killough as a member of the Planning committee was approved. Session also voted on and approved the members of this year s Worship committee, being Jim Campbell, Judy Greeson, Mary Mullins, Bonnie Murray, Sydney Murray, Larry Shappert, Anna Thomas (ex officio), and Pastor Sharon Youngs (ex officio). Richard Ward is chair of the committee. Names of members of other committees reported in last month s Banner are available on the church website (

March 2013 Page 5 Oh Lord, It's Hard To Be Humble On February 24, FPC s Anna Thomas participated in a Music Directors concert held at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. She was joined by Chuck Hadden and Sharon Youngs, who shared this tongue-in-cheek song on Presbyterian doctrine. Mac Davis, music Chuck Hadden, lyrics Refrain Oh Lord, it s hard to be humble, when you re perfect in every way; We don't have to look in the Bible to know we're God's chosen each day. To know us is to love us, 'Cause we're Presbyterian. Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble, But we're doing the best that we can. Verses We don't have to work for salvation, We deserve it for being so kind; We're glad for our fine education, Since religion is all in the mind. We believe in predestination, What that means we really don't know; God's grace is irresistible, So we just go with the flow. We believe the Gospel story As we read it in God's Holy Word, Though we choose which pieces to act on We don't accept all that we've heard. We understand theology; The Church's Great Ends are so neat, But sometimes we discover Our great ends are glued to our seat. Our connectional church is a blessing, Hierarchy that's bettered by none; General Assembly makes good decisions, That is, when our side has won. We have a perfect Session, We ordain the best women and men; They agree on every issue, Or at least on six out of ten. Anna s Literary Society: 35 Members Discuss a Book Each Month We're generous when thinking of others, When it's needed there's plenty of cash; But there's trouble raising the budget We don't want to do anything rash. Our hymns are the best of all ages, They all have a stately square beat; We don't want to get too excited, Or we may try to move our feet. From left Jeff Kile, Terry Shipley, Sharon Youngs, Chuck Hadden, and Anna Thomas, at the Music Directors Concert on Feb. 24. One Tuesday a month, they gather at 10 a.m. in room 102 of the Activities Building. If the book is a popular one, all 35 members of Anna s Literary Society may show up to share critiques, commentary, and plenty of laughter. Anna Robinson, known for running a clean meeting, will actually ring a silver bell to restore order if members begin to talk over one another. At the end of the meeting, participants rate the book from 1 to 10 and explain their score. It s so interesting to see a single book through the eyes and life experiences of this diverse group, said Sue Byrne. And the dialogue is incredibly lush and thoughtprovoking. Anna s Literary Society is more than a book club. The generous members donate supplies every month to restock the ADFAC pantry, provide books for the fledgling Briceville library, and advance literacy grants in the area through their support of the Altrusa Rotary Literacy Luncheon. For more information, see Anna Robinson. In and around FPC: Anna s Literary Society meets monthly in Room 102 to discuss books, donate to the ADFAC pantry, and develop friendship through the love of reading.

Page 6 The Banner From Your Parish Nurse: How To Care for Aging Skin Meg Tonne, Parish Nurse April Health Luncheon Wed., April 17, noon, Room 102 of the Activities Building. David Holden, manager, Knox County Office on Aging, will speak on How Changes in Medicare Regulations Will Affect You. The program is free and open to the community. Lunch costs $5. Please call (865) to make reservations. So, it s never too late to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun. Americans spend billions of dollars each year on skin care products that promise to erase wrinkles, lighten age spots, and eliminate itching, flaking, or redness. But the simplest and cheapest way to keep your skin healthy and young looking is to avoid sunlight a major cause of skin changes such as wrinkles, dryness, and age spots. Skin does changewith age you sweat less, increasing dryness. As your skin ages, it becomes thinner and loses fat, so it looks less plump and smooth. Underlying structures veins and bones in particular become more prominent. Your skin can take longer to heal when injured. You can delay these changes by staying out of the sun. Although nothing can completely undo sun damage, the skin sometimes can repair itself. So, it s never too late to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun. Wrinkles. Over time the sun s ultraviolet (UV) light breaks down skin fibers (elastin), causing the skin to lose its ability to snap back after stretching. As a result, wrinkles form. Gravity tugs at the skin, making it sag, most noticeably on the face, neck, and upper arms. Cigarette smoking also contributes to wrinkles. Why smokers tend to have more wrinkles than nonsmokers of the same age, complexion, and history of sun exposure is not clear. Perhaps smoking plays a role in damaging elastin. Facial wrinkling increases with the number of cigarettes and years a person has smoked. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, over-the-counter wrinkle creams and lotions that claim to revitalize aging skin may soothe dry skin but do little to reverse wrinkles. Tretinoin cream (Renova) is the only product that has been studied for safety and effectiveness and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat signs of sun-damaged or aging skin. Renova, a vitamin A derivative available by prescription only, is approved for reducing the appearance of fine wrinkles, mottled darkened spots, and roughness in people whose skin doesn t improve with regular skin care and use of sun protection. Dry skin and itching. Many older people suffer from dry skin, particularly on their lower legs, elbows, and forearms. The skin feels rough and scaly and often is accompanied by a distressing, intense itchiness. Causes may include loss of sweat and oil glands and low humidity from overheating in winter and air conditioning in summer. Overuse of soaps, antiperspirants, and perfumes, too many hot baths, dehydration, sun exposure, smoking, and stress also may make skin dry. If your skin is very dry and itchy, see a doctor. Dry skin and itching may affect your sleep, cause irritability, or be a symptom of diabetes or kidney disease. Some medicines make the itchiness worse. The most common treatment for dry skin is the use of moisturizers ointments, creams, and lotions to reduce water loss and soothe the skin. To help relieve dry skin, run a humidifier, bathe less often, and use milder soaps and warm, rather than hot, water. Bruising. The increase in the number of bruises on arms and legs of older people occurs because skin becomes thinner with age and sun damage. Loss of fat and connective tissue weakens the support around blood vessels, making them more susceptible to injury. The skin bruises and tears more easily and takes longer to heal. Medications may cause bruising. Check your skin often. Look for changes in the size, shape, color, or feel of birthmarks, moles, and spots. If you find any worrisome changes, see a doctor. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests that older, fair-skinned people have a yearly skin check by a doctor as part of a regular physical exam. Source: MedicineNet.

Do you know what to do with them? Bring them to the FPC fellowship hall Sunday, April 28, or Monday, April 29, by 9 a.m. E-Cycle of Knoxville will arrive early Monday to pick up your old computers, keyboards, monitors, fax machines, speakers, TVs, radios, etc. Be sure to tell your family and friends about this event, too. There are many reasons to think twice about simply putting your old electronic equipment in the trash. The most important reason is that computers and other equipment contain materials that are hazardous to the environment when they are dumped in a landfill. It is also crucial to recycle your old electronics with a certified recycler. Thank you, E- Cycle.
