First Presbyterian Church April 30, :00 a.m. God s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others Blessed with God s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity. By Jesus Christ s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.

*Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. Prelude Blessed Assurance Sanborn Chiming of the Hour Welcome Introit This is the day that the Lord has made, that all may see God s love displayed, May feel God s resurrection s power, and rise again to fall no more, In perfect righteousness renewed, and filled with all the life of God. *Call to Worship (from Psalm 116) Christ is risen! Christ is risen, indeed! What shall we return to God for the Lord s bounty to us? We will pay our vows to God in the presence of the holy assembly. What shall we offer to God for the gift of life in abundance? We will walk in the paths of righteousness and serve God with joy! *Hymn 248 *Invitation to Confession Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! *Prayer of Confession God of grace and mercy, in the light of your glory we see ourselves as we truly are sinners in need of forgiveness. We have done much to push our own agendas, while having done little to ease the plight of others. We have been too preoccupied with our own agendas to recognize your presence alongside us or in the faces of those we meet. Forgive us, Lord. Place our steps firmly in the way you would have us go, so that we might, in turn, point the way to Resurrection life for others; in the name of our Risen Lord we pray. (time for silent confession) And let God s people say: Amen. *Assurance of Forgiveness FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) April 30, 2017 Third Sunday of Easter *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. 2

*Sung Response We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. Anthem Time with the Children Children are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to First Steps. First Reading 1 Peter 1:17-23 Second Reading Luke 24:13-35 Sermon Meeting Us Where We Are Sharon Youngs *Affirmation of Faith (adapted by members of FPC) We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen. Offering of God s Tithes and Our Gifts Offertory Offertoire Clarke *Doxology (hymn 609) and Prayer of Dedication Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known: Creator, Word and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Breaking of the Bread, Pouring of the Cup The Sacrament of Holy Communion Invitation to the Lord s Table Hymn 500 Be Known to Us in Breaking Bread Great Prayer of Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 3

*Hymn 821 Glorious God, we give you thanks and praise joining our voices with the eternal chorus of rejoicing who forever sing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. All-embracing God, we give thanks for Jesus Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts... eternally in songs of pure unbounded praise, now and forever. Amen. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Sharing of the Elements [Communion is served by intinction. You are invited to come forward, take a piece of bread (all gluten-free), dip it into the chalice, and then eat it.] Prayer after Communion Through the breaking of bread our eyes have been open to you, Lord. As you have fed us at this Table, so now send us to feed others in your name, meeting them where they are; in Jesus name. Amen. *Charge and Blessing My Life Flows On *Congregational Response (see inside back cover of hymnal) Irish Blessing Postlude Marvelous Is Thy Name Hughes Today s flowers are given by Cheryl & Mike Bast to the glory of God and in memory of Mike s father Robert. 4

Welcome to First Presbyterian Church (FPC)! No matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here. We hope you feel the love that is present and our joy in having you with us. Please join us for refreshments in the fellowship hall following worship. Nursery care is available in the Education building. Ask any of the ushers to direct you, if needed. Hearing assistance units and large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Audio recordings of sermons and more information on FPC are at fpcor.org. Please call the church office ( ) for audio recordings of the entire service. WORSHIP NOTES Today's anthem is a setting of the hymn, Day of Arising, #252 in Glory to God. The opening line reminds us that Jesus' encounter with travelers on the road to Emmaus happened on the afternoon of the day he rose from the dead. The first stanza provides a summary of the event, and the second stanza applies it to our lives as believers. The third stanza enlarges the application to the experience of the presence of Christ in the gathered church, especially as it is known in the celebration of the Lord's Supper. In the final stanza, we pray that our experience of Christ's presence will open our eyes to see the world as Christ does. FIFTH SUNDAY AT FPC Everyone is invited to gather after worship today for an extended time of fellowship (there will be no post-worship Sunday school). In addition to enjoying one another s company, we will celebrate upcoming births! Two couples Jay Billings and Paige Landry, as well as Chris and Julie Black are each expecting a baby this summer. We will wish them well on this new adventure!
