1 First Presbyterian Church January 12, :00 a.m. God s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others. Blessed with God s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity. By Jesus Christ s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.
2 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) January 12, 2014 Baptism of the Lord *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome Introit (Hymn 399) God welcomes all, strangers and friends; God s love is strong and it never ends. *Call to Worship (From Psalm 29:3 and Matthew 3:17) The voice of the Lord is over the waters; The God of glory thunders. And the voice from heaven said: This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. *Hymn 4 *Call to Confession Holy God, We Praise Your Name *Prayer of Confession God of grace and glory, we confess that we have not sought or loved you with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. We often adore the high and powerful and ignore prophetic voices and humble servants. Our fears, envy, and prejudice blind us and we fail to share your love for all. Forgive us; give us grace. Pour out your powerful Spirit. Renew us in our calling: to express the wonder of your love in Jesus Christ our Lord. (time for silent confession) And let God s people say: Amen. *Assurance of Pardon *Sung Response Hymn 447 We Are Forgiven *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. Anthem When You Pass Through the Water Paul Weber 2
3 Time with the Children Bob Cantrell Children, second grade and younger, are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to activity time in the education building. First Reading Isaiah 42:1-9 Psalm 29 All on earth and all in heaven, Raise to God a song on high; Strength unmeasured, love unbounded, God alone we glorify. At God s voice the clouds assemble, Thunder roars and torrents fall; Earth shall quake before God s presence, Mountains tremble at God s call. Trees shall bow in awe and wonder, Bend their branches to the ground; From God s lips one word in anger Wreaks destruction all around. But the Word which sets in motion Such travails can make them cease; That same voice which tumult beckons In a gentler breath speaks peace. Second Reading Matthew 3:13-17 Sermon Hearing the Voice of Home Bob Cantrell *Hymn 726 *Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant Sentences of Scripture The Summons Profession of Faith Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world? I do. Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Lord and Savior, trusting in his grace and love? I do. Will you be Christ s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love? I will, with God s help. With the whole church, let us confess our faith. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 3
4 Remembering Our Baptism You are invited to come to the font as you are able. Touch the water, trace a cross on your forehead, and take a pebble if you like. Remember your baptism and be thankful. Prayers of the People - with The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Offering of God s Tithes and Our Gifts *Doxology hymn 606 Old Hundredth *Prayer of Dedication *Hymn 761 *Charge and Benediction Called as Partners in Christ s Service *Congregational Response (see insert) Irish Blessing May the road rise to meet you, may the wind blow at your back, May the sun shine warmly on your face; May the rain fall softly on your field; And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen. Postlude Today s flowers are given by Shirley Knight to the glory of God and in memory of her husband Ralph, and her son Mack. 4
