First Presbyterian Church June 15, :00 a.m. God s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others. Blessed with God s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity. By Jesus Christ s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.

Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. Introit The play of the Godhead, the Trinity s dance, embraces the earth in a sacred romance: with God the Creator, and Christ the true Son, entwined in the Spirit, a web daily spun in spangles of mystery, the great Three-in-One. (Hymn 9) *Call to Worship When the Creator speaks, awesome wonders come into being. May we learn to speak life and share its abundance with all creation. When the Redeemer speaks, mercy and justice are made flesh. May we learn to speak with equity and share the well of God s love. When the Sustainer speaks, chaos turns to order and peace. May we learn to speak peace and reconciliation into the chaos of war and strife. Let us worship our Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. *Hymn 1 *Call to Confession Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! *Prayer of Confession Creating God, speak peace into the chaos of our love for sin. Redeeming God, speak mercy into the injustice of our love for self. Sustaining God, speak reconciliation into our love for division and strife. Forgive us, O God, and restore us to right relationships with you and with each other. Mold us into the forms of your abiding love that all creation will know life and its abundance. Create in us an unquenchable thirst for peace that we will know one another as sisters and brothers. Shape us in your image that we will reflect your radical welcome home to all. (time for silent confession) And let God s people say: Amen. *Assurance of Pardon FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) June 15, 2014 Trinity Sunday *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. 2

*Sung Response (Hymn 306) Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love. The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Anthem Alleluia! Alleluia! Mengel Time with the Children Children, second grade and younger, are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to activity time in the education building. *Hymn 32 First Reading Psalm 8 I Sing the Mighty Power of God Genesis 1:1-2:4a Cooney Refrain When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the stars which you arranged, What are we that you keep us in mind? Our children that you remember them at all? Refrain Yet you have us little less than gods, with glory and honor you crowned us, Gave us pow r over the work of your hands, dominion over all that you have made. Refrain All sheep and oxen, birds of the air, all things that swim in the sea; Beasts without number, life without names, you have placed under our feet. Refrain Second Reading Matthew 28:16-20 Sermon Imagining God Daniel Tipton *Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed (traditional version) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. 3

Call to Prayer (Hymn 59) The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; God s mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning; Great is your faithfulness, O Lord, great is your faithfulness. Prayers of the People - with The Lord s Prayer (ecumenical version) { Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Offering of God s Tithes and Our Gifts *Doxology (Hymn 609) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known: Creator, Word, and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! *Prayer of Dedication *Hymn 297 *Charge and Benediction In Christ Called to Baptize *Congregational Response (see inside back cover of hymnal) Irish Blessing May the road rise to meet you, may the wind blow at your back, May the sun shine warmly on your face; May the rain fall softly on your field; And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen. Postlude Today s flowers are given to the glory of God and in honor of Sharon Youngs birthday. 4

WELCOME GUESTS! We are glad you are here! You are invited to join us for refreshments in the Fellowship Hall (behind the sanctuary) following worship. If you would like to know more about First Presbyterian Church, please let us know. Talk with the pastor or give us a call ( ). Again, welcome! Things to know The nursery is located on the first floor of the Education Building. Hearing assistance units, large print bulletins, and children s bulletins are available from the ushers. Bulletins and sermons available at fpcor.org. For recordings of the worship service, please contact the church office. WORSHIP NOTES Today is Trinity Sunday, which is reflected in our music in worship this morning. Hymn 9 The Play of the Godhead The text of Hymn 9, today s introit, gives life to the theological term perichoresis, a mutual, encompassing interaction, sometimes called the threefold dance of the Trinity. Stanza two notes various natural analogies for the Trinity (steam/ water/ice; root/shoot/fruit) that have been found inadequate. Hymn 1 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! In 325 AD, church leaders convened in the town of Nicea in Bithynia to formulate a consensus of belief and practice among Christians. What resulted was the Nicene Creed, a document passed on through the ages as one of the pillars of church doctrine. The primary function of this creed was to establish a firm belief in the Trinity, countering the heresy of Arius, who believed that Jesus was not fully divine. It was this creed that inspired Reginald Heber to write this great hymn of praise to the Triune God, with the intent that the hymn be sung before or after the creed was recited in a service, and on Trinity Sunday-eight weeks after Easter. The tune, composed by John B. Dykes for Heber s text, is also titled NICEA in recognition of Heber s text. The words evoke a sense of awe at the majesty of God, and call on all of creationhumans, saints and angels, and all living things-to praise the Godhead three-in-one.
