1 TIE BINDER March 2014 Pemberville Presbyterian Church Pastor James Miller 106 Pine Street, Pemberville OH T: (419) There used to be a TV show called Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. The title is self-explanatory. It was a visual orgy of lust for the good life. I never watched it. It has been replaced, I think, by a show called Keeping Up With the Kardashians. It is a reality TV show about the rich and famous being, well, rich and famous. As such, it is about the furthest thing from reality. I have never seen it either. Both shows are about something called lifestyles. (By the way, don t be put off by my comments about shows I ve never seen. Lack of familiarity doesn t stop politicians, or news media, of every stripe, from commenting on topics they know little about). I m thinking about lifestyles. Lifestyle is defined, by Dictionary.com, as the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level, etc., that together constitute the mode of living of an individual or group. In that sense, everyone has a lifestyle, and so does every group of people. We all make choices, often unconscious, about how, where, and why we live. My question is this: Is there such a thing as a Christian lifestyle? If so, what would it look like? What words come to your mind that could be used to describe Christian lifestyle? I m thinking big picture here. First of all, I hope you thought of love, both love for God, and love of others. To be more specific, Philippians 2:3-4 says, Do nothing out of selfish ambition of vain conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Galatians 6:2 says we should bear one another s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Being willing to care for others, to love others, especially when it requires a sacrifice of time and effort ( taking pains to care), is a good description of a Christian lifestyle. Please note that this care giving, loving lifestyle is required of everyone, no exceptions. In fact, a good part of the judgment we will all undergo is how well we have lived this sacrificial, caring love and concern. If you are interested in growing in this kind of life, the adult Sunday School class will be going through the Stephen Ministry book Christian Caregiving: a Way of life, as soon as we finish our current class. In fact, one of the best ways to grow in this loving caring lifestyle is to take the training to be a Stephen Minister. Keep your ears and eyes open for the first training class. 2 Lenten Services Once again this Lenten season we will be having community Lenten services at Portage Valley, every Wednesday in Lent, at. The preaching theme will be My favorite miracle. Recipes of the Month By: Ruth Wengert Would you like to bake communion bread for worship? Following are three recipes listed that we have used several times in the last 3 months. There are many moreailable. They are not particularly hard or tricky to make. If you are interested in baking bread for communion, please speak to Rose Jones or Marti Zeek. Gloria Dei Bread 6 cups all purpose flour 1 Tablespoon sugar 1 # butter, not margarine 1 pt. half and half 1/2 tsp salt Cut butter into dry ingredients. Gradually add half and half, mixing well until consistency of bread dough. (Use your fingers.) Turn out onto a floured board and knead well. Divide into 8 parts and roll out 8 loaves of bread on floured surface. Transfer to a cookie sheet. Leave loaves whole or score the dough into 1 inch squares. Pierce whole loaf liberally, or each square with a fork. Bake 350 degrees 10 to 12 minutes then check it. It is done when it looks like cooked pie crust. Holy Bread (recipe that Bethlehem uses) 1 and 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 3 Tablespoons margarine or butter 1/2 cup all purpose or white bread flour 3/4 cup water 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 3 Tablespoons honey 3/4 teaspoon salt Combine first 4 ingredients well. Cut in margarine or butter. Combine water and honey, then stir into the other ingredients. (You will have a very sticky dough.) Place on board, adding flour until you can knead it. Knead it until smooth. Divide into 4 equal parts. Roll each into a 6 inch circle. Score into squares or leave whole and pierce. Brush lightly with olive or canola oil. Bake 350 degrees on a lightly greased cookie sheet for 10 minutes. (Do not over bake; it dries out quickly.) Opportunities for Service After School Youth Club The ASYC needs a dinner coordinator for March and April (3 Wednesdays). Please see Jim Miller if interested in helping. Priceless Pancakes Volunteers and pancake eaters are always needed. We hope to see you there (last Saturday of every month)! Hannah s Socks There is a box for socks at the back of the sanctuary. Socks will be collected through the month of March. Good Samaritan Food Pantry Please don t forget to pick up a few items for the Good Samaritan Food Pantry. Please take items either to Pemberville Presbyterian or directly to Bethlehem Lutheran Church to the mission room right inside the east door, opposite the fellowship room. 3 Luther Seminary's Bread Sift together 3 times: 2 cups whole wheat flour 1 cup all purpose flour 1 and 1/4th teaspoon baking powder Stir in 4 teaspoons oil. Set aside. Mix together until dissolved: 3/4 cup and 2 Tablespoons very hot water (minimum of 180 degrees F) 3 Tablespoons honey 3 Tablespoons molasses Add liquid ingredients to dry ingredients and mix well. Dough should be slightly sticky. Do not knead. Divide into 4 balls and flatten each into a 1/4 inch thick disk. Score and/or pierce. Transfer to baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and brush the tops of the loaves with oil. Bake an additional 5-8 minutes. Cool. Look Who s Talking Questions were asked of one church member. How did you first get involved with Pemberville Presbyterian Church? A. The Millers were our neighbors. After Josh was born we thought the proper thing to do was take our children to church, so we went to Jim & Pam's. Q. What do you wish other people knew about Pemberville Presbyterian? A.. Although the congregation is relatively small, there are many amazing people.
