First Presbyterian Church November 16, :00 a.m. God s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others. Blessed with God s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity. By Jesus Christ s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) November 16, 2014 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome Introit O day of God, draw nigh in beauty and in power. Come with your timeless judgment now to match this present hour. *Call to Worship Keep silence in God s presence; the day of the Lord is at hand! Let us not fall asleep, but live as children of light. The great day of the Lord is near; near and hastening fast. We watch and wait in faith, hope, and love. *Hymn 612 *Call to Confession We Praise You, O God *Prayer of Confession Sovereign God, we confess that we are not ready for your holy realm. You adorn us with the armor of light, but we hide ourselves in darkness. You trust us with the message of grace, but we bury that treasure in fear. Forgive us, merciful God, so that we may return to your fold and rejoice in your presence; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the Lamb upon the throne. (time for silent confession) And let God s people say: Amen. *Assurance of Pardon *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. 2

*Sung Response Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love. The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Anthem Followers of the Lamb arr. Ditterich Time with the Children Children, second grade and younger, are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to activity time in the education building. Hymn 716 God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending First Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 Psalm 123 Karen Pence Hopson Refrain I lift my eyes to you, O Lord, Your throne, earth s canopy; As masters hold their servants dear, so, Lord, remember me. Refrain More like a child than bonded slave, I claim your grace outright; The proud shall fall, but yet the meek find favor in your sight. Refrain Your boundless mercies, Lord, outweigh the scorn we must endure; While foes shall fade in their contempt, your love will long endure. Refrain Second Reading Matthew 25:14-30 Sermon Risky Investments Bob Cantrell 3

*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed (traditional version) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Call to Prayer The Lord is God, the Lord alone; give honor, thanks, and praise to God, the maker of all things and giver of our days. Prayers of the People - with The Lord s Prayer (ecumenical version) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Offering of God s Tithes and Our Gifts *Song of Dedication We give you but your own in all we are or do; All that we have is yours alone a trust, O Lord, from you. *Prayer of Dedication *Hymn 700 *Charge and Benediction I m Gonna Live So God Can Use Me *Sung Response (see inside back cover of hymnal) Postlude Irish Blessing Today s flowers are given by Mike & Peggy Hilliard to the glory of God and in honor of the birthday of Peggy s father, M. Bradley Wilson, III. 4

WELCOME GUESTS! We are glad you are here! You are invited to join us for refreshments in the Fellowship Hall (behind the sanctuary) following worship. If you would like to know more about First Presbyterian Church, please let us know. Talk with the pastor or give us a call ( ). Again, welcome! Things to know The nursery is located on the first floor of the Education Building. Hearing assistance units, large print bulletins, and children s bulletins are available from the ushers. Bulletins and sermons available at fpcor.org. For recordings of the worship service, please contact the church office. WORSHIP NOTES In comparison with England and America, small countries such as the Netherlands can become lost in the world of hymnody. The tune for our opening hymn, however, is the most widely distributed of any Dutch hymn tune, and is recognized and loved around the world. Kremser was first published in 1626 with the old Dutch text 'We Gather Together.' The simple and beautiful melody comes from an old Dutch folk song. Thank you to Rev. Bob Cantrell for preaching today. Bob is a good friend of First Presbyterian church and a retired Methodist pastor. Sharon is doing well as she continues recuperating from knee surgery. Her plan is to be back leading worship next Sunday, November 23. In the case of a pastoral emergency, please contact our parish nurse, Meg Tonne at HEALTH LUNCHEON This Thursday, November 20, 12:00 p.m., in room 102. Jerry Allen, R.N. with Dermatology Associates of Oak Ridge will present Care of the Aging Skin, New Techniques.
