4 *Affirmation of Faith (from A Brief Statement of Faith) We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God s image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God s commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God s condemnation. Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In ever lasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still. (2) We will host a community-wide 100-mile potluck here at FPC from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Bring a dish for 6-8 folks that contains at least one ingredient grown within 100 miles of Oak Ridge. (3) Bill McKibben (pictured to the left), renowned speaker and environmentalist will present Keep the Faith and Do the Math, a special FPC-sponsored Davidson Lecture at 7:00 p.m. at the Oak Ridge High School. There will be many opportunities for service as we prepare for the day, especially the potluck (see back page for ideas). 7 Ecumenical Storehouse FPC members staff the Ecumenical Storehouse during the month of August, so please check the sign-up sheet in the fellowship hall to see if there are any open slots you can fill. Thank you in advance to all the volunteers for helping to sustain the success of this local mission project. Our congregation is one of several Oak Ridge churches that rotate monthly volunteer responsibilities at the storehouse. For more information about the storehouse and our work there, please call Ted Atkinson at Pastor Sharon is out of town, through August 15, first for Big Tent from August 1-3, then on vacation. In the event of a pastoral emergency, please contact Meg Tonne, parish nurse, at , or Adrienne Pyle, office manager, at , for assistance. PFLAG Meeting The new Oak Ridge chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) will meet Monday evening, August 5 in Room 102. A social time will begin at 6:45 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7:00. The meeting will take final steps toward formalizing the group s association with the national PFLAG organization and explore actions in support of Oak Ridge High School s Gay Straight Alliance. Founded in 1972, PFLAG is a national non-profit organization with 350 chapters in all 50 states, including 8 in Tennessee. PFLAG provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identities with the goal of creating a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity. The Oak Ridge group began gathering last fall for the purpose of providing a welcoming environment for LGBT people of faith and their allies. Meeting at 6:45 p.m. the first Monday of each month, the group rotates its meetings, at this point, between First Presbyterian Church, the Unitarian Universalist Church, and Grace Covenant Church. Newcomers are welcome. If you wish to donate flowers for worship, please sign up on the flower chart on the fellowship hall bulletin board. iii

8 How can I help? So glad you asked. Hosting a community-wide potluck will require an wonderful army of volunteers. Artists are needed to make signs. Muscles are need to set up tables. Parking attendants, greeters to direct guests to helpers tagging dishes, servers at the drink table, and more. Whatever your gifts, there s a place for you.
