First Presbyterian Church August 27, :00 a.m Embodying Christ s inclusive love with heart, mind, and service
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) August 27, 2017 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. Prelude He Hideth My Soul arr. Hayes Chiming of the Hour Welcome Introit Worship God with music! Let it fill the air! Make the mighty chorus echo everywhere! Worship God with music! Creatures great and small bow in adoration, thanks for blessings all! Make a joyful noise! Let the organ sound! Tell the goodness of the Lord everywhere around! Worship God with music, notes and harmony! Glory hallelujah to the Deity! *Call to Worship (from Psalm 138) Let us give thanks to the Lord with our whole heart; Let us give thanks to God, whose name is above everything and everyone. All the rulers of the earth shall praise the Lord; For God, who is on high, regards and preserves the lowly. *Hymn 32 I Sing the Mighty Power of God *Invitation to Confession *Prayer of Confession Forgiving God, we confess that we are conformed to this world. We are swept up in the frantic pace around us, too hectic to notice all the blessings you provide or the people who deliver them. We consume more than we need, too eager to have the latest instead of the lasting. We are reckless in our relationships, too quick to cast aside rather than care about the concerns of others. Have mercy on us, Lord. Transform us into those who enhance your realm on earth; through Christ we pray. (time for silent confession) And let God s people say: Amen. *Assurance of Forgiveness *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. 2
*Sung Response (hymn 447) We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Thanks be to God. (repeat) Anthem Sanctuary Thompson/Larson Time with the Children Children, second grade and younger, are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to First Steps. Psalm 124 Chuck Hadden Hopson Refrain Say it, Israel! If the Lord had not been with us, when our enemies attacked us, Then they would have swallowed us alive in their furious anger, Then the raging waters would have swept us away, The torrents would have drowned us. Refrain Let us thank the Lord, who has not let our enemies destroy us. We have escaped like a bird from a hunter s trap. We are free. Our help is in the name of the Lord, creator of heaven and earth. Refrain Scripture Reading Exodus 1:8-2:10 Sermon Call the Midwives Sharon Youngs 3
*Affirmation of Faith (adapted from A Declaration of Faith) God sends us to exercise compassion. Out of concern for justice in the social order, God has never forgotten the needs of individuals. In the end the Lord will judge all persons by the simple, unremembered acts of kindness they did or failed to do for the least of their sisters and brothers. We acknowledge God is at work here and now when people show personal concern for one another and work to make helping agencies, including the church itself, more compassionate. We believe God sends us to risk our own peace and comfort in compassion for our neighbors. Amen. Call to Prayer (hymn 654) In the Lord I ll be ever thankful; in the Lord I will rejoice! Look to God; do not be afraid. Lift up your voices; the Lord is near. Lift up your voices; the Lord is near. Prayers of the People, with The Lord s Prayer (ecumenical version) { Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Offering of God s Tithes and Our Gifts Offertory Trust in the Lord Callender *Doxology (hymn 606) and Prayer of Dedication *Hymn 757 Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples *Charge and Blessing *Sung Response Irish Blessing (inside back cover of hymnal) Postlude Trumpet Tune in C Ryan Today s flowers are given by Shirley Sauls to the glory of God and in memory of her husband Bill. 4
Welcome to First Presbyterian Church (FPC)! No matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here. We hope you feel the love that is present and our joy in having you with us. Please join us for refreshments in the fellowship hall following worship. Nursery care is available in the Education building. Ask any of the ushers to direct you, if needed. Hearing assistance units and large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Audio recordings of sermons and more information on FPC are at fpcor.org. Please call the church office ( ) for audio recordings of the entire service. WORSHIP NOTES Our affirmation of faith today is adapted from A Declaration of Faith, a 1976 study document from the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS). The PCUS was one of the two denominations that reunited in 1983 to form the current Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Our anthem today is a setting of Sanctuary, a song familiar to our congregation. It was first published in 1982 by John Thompson and Randy Scruggs. The refrain is based in images used by Paul in writing to the Corinthians, reminding them that bodies are temples of the living God: 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 and 2 Corinthians 6:16.
