1 Owen County Extension Homemaker Newsletter February 2017 Dear Extension Homemakers, January has certainly been warm. Will winter arrive in February or March? Maybe we will be lucky and it will be like spring until summer! Only time will tell. Extension Homemakers Council Notes The Owen County Extension Homemakers Council met on Monday, January 30 th. The following items were discussed: Santa s Castle-This was a great year with all the wonderful items the children selected for family and friends. Membership-This year, there are 194 members in Owen County Extension Homemakers organization, encourage your friends and family members to join. Christmas Parade-It certainly was a Story Book Christmas Parade with all the participants, misty weather, and audience watching the parade. 4-H Achievement Banquet- Donation to extension homemaker s scholarship fund. Area Trip-Great time in Charleston, South Carolina and the Christmas Program with the Robinsons. KEHA Annual Meeting (May 1 st -4 th )- Owensboro-Elizabeth Prewitt, Machele Bess & Mary Marlow will be singing in the state chorus. Machele Bess & Debbie Primeau will serve as voting delegates. Northern Kentucky is responsible for Quilt Squares display. See flyer for more details. Northern KY Area Council-will meet in Owen County on Thursday, April 20 th at 1:30 PM. A light lunch will be prepared and served starting at 12:30 PM. Volunteers needed to help that day. Heart Walk-Saturday, March 4 th from 11:00AM- 5:00PM at the First Baptist Church Life Center. Scrappin for the Community-This event will be held on Saturday, March 18 th from 9:00AM- Midnight. Cooperative Extension Service Owen County 265 Ellis Highway Owenton, KY (502) Fax: (502) extension.ca.uky.edu Sewing Expo-April 10th-12 th at General Butler State Resort Park. Need volunteers to serve as hostess during the conference. By-laws Updated-Elizabeth Prewitt, Mary Marlow & Jan Dunavent are on the committee. Homemaker Scholarship-The council voted to increase the scholarship from $250 to $500. The deadline to apply is May 1 st. County Trip-Elizabeth Prewitt, Toby Bell and Lucy Smith are to play day trips for the summer. County Fair-The Owen County Fair will be held Tuesday-Saturday, July 18 th -22 nd. The cleanup will be on Monday with entries on Tuesday. Project Graduation-$100 donation was made. Back Pack Program-$100 donation was made. Homemaker Reports-In the June club meeting presidents will ask members to help complete a homemaker report for hours given in volunteer support during the year. The Cotton Club The Cotton Club will meet on Tuesday, February 21 st at 6:00 PM. The group will continue with the pizza box quilt, as well as the ¼ inch seam project. If you need assistance, please let Kay Wilson know. Learn With Us! The February Learn With Us! will be Downsizing Your Living Space that will be taught by Joan Bowling, Kenton County Extension Agent for FCS Education. This program will be held on Wednesday, February 15 th at the Owen County Extension Office at 1:30 PM. Downsizing from a family home can be physically exhausting and an emotionally draining experience. In many cases, possessions have ben accumulated over a number of years and not everything can (or should) be moved. Participants will receive suggestions on how to

2 begin the process, what to do with possessions and tips for keeping things peaceful within the family. KEHA Quilt Squares Needed Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association has a quilt square fundraising program to be held at the state meeting in April. Anyone who would like to participate should make a 12-in finished quilt square. (Finished means piece the square, put in batting, put on backing, and finish the edges just like you would complete a quilt.) Bring the finished 12-inch quilt square to the KEHA meeting to enter in a contest. Everyone visiting the display will receive one ticket to vote for the quilt square they think is the grand prize winner and the winner will be recognized. Members attending the state meeting will bid on the squares they would like to purchase. Not only will this generate money for KEHA, but it will also provide a chance to view and enjoy them. Please let me know if you plan to complete a square to the office by April 25 th, so it can be taken to the state meeting. Hope some of our quilters will participate. If you have any questions just give me a call. 4-H Volunteers Volunteers are needed to assist with sewing projects in February, March and April. Let us know if you could assist for several hours on Mondays and Tuesdays after school from 3:30-6:00 PM. Your help is greatly appreciated. Creative Writing Contest KEHA Creative Writing contest in short stories, memoirs and poetry are due on March 1 st. If you would like to send in an entry to the state contest, please call the extension office for details. WANTED Individuals who are interested in helping or assisting with the exhibit hall during the county fair. Please call the extension office at for more information. Just for Moms! Our next meeting will held at Bird Dogs on February 21 st at 6:00 PM. Bring your husband for coffee or tea and something sweet to eat with your sweetie. Call Machele Bess at by February 17 th to RSVP. Looking forward to seeing you there! Craft Club The Craft Club will be meeting March 13 th at 6:00 PM in the Conference Room at the Extension Office. We will be making Swedish Weaving Dish Towel. Cost is $5.00. Please call the Extension Office at by March 1 st to register. Remember there will NOT be February meeting. Memory Makers The next Scrappin for the Community will be held on Saturday, March 18 th from 9:00 AM-Midnight. You will need to register to Debbie McMillen at by March 3 rd. Tables go fast, so get your registration into her. Even if you do not scrapbook, you can still come and shop for birthdays, weddings, graduations, Mother s Day, etc. Many different vendors will be sitting up in the room also with us. 7 Scrappin for the Community Saturday, March 18th 9 AM to Midnight Held at the Owen County Extension Center Owenton, KY This event is sponsored by the Owen County Extension Homemakers with all proceeds going to Owen County Children s Fund and Mee ng the Needs! Everyone is welcome to come shop even if you are not a scrapbooker and EXCELLENT way to shop for birthdays, weddings, gradua ons, Mother s Day, etc.! Enjoy the en re day for only $50 (6. table) or $25 (1/2 table) Registra on includes meals and snacks (prepared by the Homemakers), goodie bags, door prizes & more! 8 2017 KEHA Quilt Square Showcase and Auction The KEHA Quilt Square Showcase and Auction will continue for the fifth consecutive year at the KEHA State Meeting. Anyone wishing to participate should make a 12" finished quilt square. (Finished means piece the square, put in the batting, put on backing and finish the edges just like you would a complete quilt.) This special showcase is an opportunity to highlight quality work from KEHA members across the state. As you prepare your quilt square, consider designs that you would want to purchase. Bring the 12" finished square to the KEHA State Meeting in Northern Kentucky. Please place your name and county on the back side of the square. The display will be in the RiverCenter Lobby near the ballroom on the 2nd level. Check-in will be at KEHA registration. Quilt squares will be assigned a number at check-in and displayed in a special area. The number will be placed on the square and a corresponding bid sheet. People will bid on the squares they would like to purchase. Bidding and viewing will be from 2-5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19 and from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20. Successful bidders must pick-up and pay from 3:30 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20. KEHA members visiting the display will receive one ticket to vote for the quilt square they think is the Best of Show and the winner will be recognized at the Awards Breakfast on Thursday morning. The Quilt Square Showcase and Auction will generate money for the KEHA general fund to help defray costs associated with the state meeting, and provides a chance to show off some beautiful quilt squares. If you are unable to attend the State Meeting, please feel free to send your square(s) with another KEHA member.
