1 First Presbyterian Church September 16, :00 a.m. God s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others. Blessed with God s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity. By Jesus Christ s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.
2 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome and Announcements SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY September 16, 2012 Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost *All who are able please stand. Text printed in Bold Italics to be read in unison by the people GATHERING AROUND GOD S WORD Introit Behold the Lamb of God, behold the Lamb of God. He takes away the sin, the sin of the world. *Call to Worship God is gracious and righteous, our protector and savior. God has dealt bountifully with us, and our souls can return to rest. God has delivered our souls from death, our eyes from tears, and our feet from stumbling. We walk before God in the land of the living. In gratitude and with joy, let us worship God. *Hymn (See Insert) At the Font We Start Our Journey *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Our words are full of deadly poison. We curse one another, ignoring the likeness of God in our neighbors. We use our words to bless You, yet curse one another. Forgive our hidden faults and cleanse us of our public sins. Let our words and our thoughts be acceptable to You, O Lord, our rock and our redeemer. Time for silent confession. And all God's people said: Amen. 2
3 *Declaration of Forgiveness *Gloria Patri Hymn 577 *The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. Avery & Marsh GOD S WORD Anthem Followers of the Lamb Shaker Tune arr. Ditterich Time with the Children Children, five years and younger, may go to activity time in the Children s Library, upstairs in the Education Building. Chuck Hadden *Hymn 409 Wild and Lone the Prophet s Voice First Reading Matthew 11:1-10 Psalm 19 Hal H. Hopson Refrain The skies declare Your glory, O God, and the firmament shows forth the work of Your hand. Day by day the story is told, and night by night Your work is proclaimed. Without a word, without a sound, their voice goes out through all the earth; the sun springs from the edge of the earth, and moves across to the farthest limits. Refrain Your law, O Lord, is perfect, it renews the soul. Your decrees are sure, they delight in the heart. Your commandments are worth more than gold, more than the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, than honey fresh from the comb. Let the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart find favor before You, O Lord, my redeemer and rock. 3
4 Second Reading John 1:19-34 Sermon Rev. Kally Elliot Jesus Ministry Begins Prayers of the People Lord s Prayer (Traditional, p. 16, Hymnal) RESPONDING TO GOD S WORD *Creed The Creed, adapted by members of FPC We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit. We seek to know God's will, to walk in God's ways, and to proclaim the Gospel to all people, by our lives as well as by our words. We work and pray for the progress of knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human unity in our time. And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen. Offering of Tithes and Gifts Offertory *Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow, Hymn 592 *Dedication of Gifts OLD HUNDREDTH SENDING US OUT TO BE GOD S WORD IN THE WORLD *Hymn 495 *Charge and Benediction *Congregational Response We Know That Christ is Raised IRISH BLESSING May the road rise to meet you, May the wind blow at your back, May the sun shine warmly on your face; May the rain fall softly on your field; And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen. Postlude 4
