1 First Presbyterian Church July 2014 tue The Light FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK Vacation Bible School 2014 Vacation Bible School will be held July 27 - July 31 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at our church for Pre-K through 5th grade. Visit our website at: com/princetonil to volunteer or sign up your child. All children in Princeton are welcome to join! The following items are needed for decorations: (display only, not for use) Peg boards (2), Tools (safe), Empty gallon paint cans Lego sets See Barbara B. with questions and to donate. My friend from the Barbershop Chorus asked me how our church was involved in the community. I didn t have any problem thinking of the many ways we connect with neighbors and the world. First, we will have two planning meetings in preparation for the Ice Cream Social/Silent Auction on Saturday, August 16 th. If you are new to this event, it is a fundraiser to benefit the Bureau County Health and Wellness Clinic helping underserved residents in the county. The clinic is located on Elm Street just east of Euclid. I asked the director of the clinic, Jean Babcock, why the service is needed since the Affordable Care Act has gone into effect. She said there will always be people who fall through the cracks because they are isolated and do not know how to access insurance. Also, there is a shortage of medical care professionals; so even if a person has insurance that does not guarantee they can find services. The changes in our health system will not ensure that the need for charity will go away. Jesus said the poor will always be with us. I remember a young unmarried mother of three children. She was destitute and living with her mother who was surviving on disability. She did not even know about the clinic let alone the availability of medical insurance. Her doctor was the emergency room. Of course I described the clinic and its location, and she promised to visit. So come and enjoy the music (the barbershop chorus will be there) the ice cream and BBQ. And be sure to put a bid on one of the many items donated by local businesses. Let s do some good and have a good time doing it! God Bless You, Pastor Brian
2 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Harold & Jeanne Hutchinson July 12th Don & Becky May Jay Braida Memorial Golf Open July 12th This year's recipient of the proceeds from the Jay Braida Memorial Golf Open will be Abbie (Bouslog) Cochran, (daughter-in-law of Jim and Pam Cochran). The event will take place on Saturday, July 12, The Golf Open will cost $60 and includes 18 holes, a cart, dinner and prizes. If you wish to attend the Dinner only, tickets are $15 for adults, $7 for children (3 and under free). See Kate Hall or call the church office for Dinner tickets or golf outing application form. (Deadline for Golfing is July 5th or when all slots are filled.) July 15th Mission Committee Announcements: THOSE SERVING IN JULY: Deacon: Janet Naaktgeboren Ushers/Greeters: Janet Naaktgeboren Krista Naaktgeboren Harold Hutchinson Jeanne Hutchinson Communion Servers: Carolyn Workman Elena Hilmes Lillian Johnson Lay Leaders: Bill Cass Roland Gibson Len Brumbaugh Dave Larson The Mission and Evangelism Committee would like to thank everyone who came out to help with the Lunch in the Park on Friday, June 13. Your efforts and food donations helped us raise nearly $600 that will be contributed to Campus Crusade/Athletes in Action on the campus of Northern Illinois University. The Batiste family provides a very muchneeded Christian-based group with the college students. With all of the negative things that we hear about on college campuses, it is refreshing when we can support such a positive organization. The Silent Auction is fast approaching. It is set for Saturday, August 16th. Auction items are still needed and welcome from any of our congregation members. If you have an item to donate then please drop it by the church as soon as possible and by July 15th at the latest. Additionally, we will need everyone's support the day of the event. Barb has placed a sign-up sheet in the foyer. We know that many of you will be there but would like to make sure that you get to help out where you like. - The Mission Committee Remembering MARY WIN NORRIS Mary Winn was a celebrated local artist, an art educator and dear friend of First Presbyterian Church. She passed away June 27, 2014, at St. Margaret s Hospital in Spring Valley. She will be missed by those whom she touched and inspired. Even in her last days, she loved to talk about her love of the arts.
3 1896: The Rev. George Smith came as pastor. He resigned within 2 years due to poor health. 1899: The Rev. Harry Allen was installed as pastor. He was one of the most popular pastors at 1st Presbyterian. The church's auditorium was changed, new pews added and a men's group was organized. Within five years 82 people were added to the rolls. By the time he resigned in 1903 membership was : The Rev. Harry Markley was ordained as the pastor. "His pastorate was notable for the evangelistic meetings conducted in Princeton in 1906 by Billy Sunday, and for the fight against saloons in the city. Mr. Markley owned one of the first automobiles here, a fact which did not "receive the complete approval of the congregation." 1907: Dr. William Hosken's tenure as pastor lasted one year and three months. He returned to southern Illinois from where he had come. 1909: Dr. Jerome McGlade began as pastor in His ministry was characterized by a big increase in the church budget and gifts to benevolences. His sermons tended to be long and rather full of doctrinal discussions. He was remembered more for being a courteous and affable gentleman. 1917: The congregation extended a call to the Rev. George Pence. His ministry continued through WWI. It was characterized by a Thanksgiving Festival: Bringing in the Hay, the New Era Movement, the ill-fated Inter-Church World Movement, and war work which included sewing and knitting, four-minute preparedness speeches inserted every Sunday into morning worship and appeals from War Relief organizations. Some members wanted him to leave, and the pastor offered to resign in The congregation, however, voted to keep him. In 1919 the session voted to send a resolution to the governor of Illinois to sign the Law Enforcement Bill for the Prohibition Act in Illinois. It also unanimously agreed "that with proper supervision the use of moving pictures in the church would be permitted." 1920: The church called the Rev. George Caldwell. Under him a separate Young People's Program was established. The excavation of the church basement was undertaken in the hope that it would allow a better-rounded social and religious education program. 1925: The Rev. John Acheson came as pastor. He was quite popular and giving continued to increase. The pastor's salary reached an all-time high of $2,700 in With the onset of the Great Depression, finances nose-dived. Mission giving dropped dramatically to its lowest point in decades. In March 1936, the church building was destroyed by fire. The crowning achievement of Rev. Acheson was raising enough money for the building of a new structure. 1937: The church extended a call to the Rev. Carl Montanus. During his ministry, the church celebrated its 100th anniversary. To Be Continued... In August's Light: "The Third 50 Years And Beyond"
4 The Session met on May 20th for a regularly scheduled meeting. The meeting opened with prayer and the minutes of the last meeting were approved as corrected and the treasurer's report were approved as written. Mary Win Norris will be 100 this August. Over 50 people attended the Mother-Daughter- Friend dinner. There are a number of options recommended by the Presbytery on how to pay the medical dues for the pastor. Our session recommended that each church be allowed to negotiate the possibilities with the pastor. This information was sent to Presbytery. Len Brumbaugh will attend the Presbytery meeting in Sterling on June 10th with Pastor Brian. The Building and Grounds committee is thinking about pulling out the junipers that edge the south side of the church building. The church's insurance will be renegotiated to see if the cost can be reduced. There will be 4 sessions in July to educate the congregation on evangelism. They will take place on each of the 4 Sundays before church at 9:15 am. All members and friends of the church are invited to participate. We are hosting Lunch in the Park on June 13th and the Ice Cream Social/Auction has been set for August 16th. Planning meetings for the August event will be held on June 11th and the 25th. The Mission committee has sent donations to a number of Food Pantries in the county. IT'S EASY! Join us each Sunday in July at 9:15 a.m. and learn how to tell your story of faith. Contact us: First Presbyterian Church 320 Park Avenue East Princeton, IL Ph A decision was made to keep the time of the worship service at 10:30 am for the summer. New banners have been put up and will hang until Pentecost Sunday. Pastor Brian will be on vacation from June 22 until June 29th. A substitute pastor will fill the pulpit on both of those Sundays. Brian has also requested a study leave on October 19th. In the winter a visitor fell and broke her arm. It was learned that her own insurance will pay for the injury and our church insurance will not be used. The meeting closed with all reciting the Lord's Prayer.
